AIBU to not pick 4 year old DD from school?

marshyrun · 20/11/2023 11:10

DD2 is 4 and in reception. She’s had the usual on off cough / colds since starting in September and is just coming to the end of a bad cold, she went to school throughout with me just giving her calpol in the mornings.

She woke up today absolutely fine, had breakfast, in good spirits. Still a slight cough but had some calcough before leaving.

School have just called to say her teacher has said she’s not herself, they checked her temp (all fine), she doesn’t feel sick or anything, they’ve said she’s just being quiet and clingy and not enthusiastic about participating in some of the activities. They’ve asked me to come and collect her if she’s still being “clingy” after lunch.

AIBU to not pick her up unless she’s actually poorly? I’m the first one to drive to school if my child is poorly but this doesn’t seem to be the case today. She’s naturally shy and quiet anyway so her being reserved is not out of character at all!

Sounds like the Calpol wore off and she is going downhill. Nip it in the bud with a good rest on the sofa.

She hadn’t had calpol. The OP has given an update

I think you’re thinking of 18, as in Combat 18. Anyway, a terrible slur on the poster, whatever nonsense they’ve said. What on earth were you thinking?

88 as in the 8th letter of the alphabet so "hail Hitler" used as code by neo Nazis. You can Google this if you don't believe me 🤷🏻‍♀️ fair enough she might of been born in 1988 if not then it seems like a pretty big coincidence to me

Parents are threatened daily by schools to improve attendance or else. It's not the parents fault everything was fine until we had the Tories in power and everything turned to shit.

I'm currently out of work due to getting a cancer diagnosis in the middle of job hunting, so I can stay home with my kids and do so if it's more than a snotty nose/mild cough in a child who is otherwise fine.

The catchment school two of my kids go to is big on attendance and have given me a threatening letter when a DC happened to get a vomiting bug three weeks into the school year.

The non-catchment school doesn't get snotty about attendance, but recently rang me because DS2 was "poorly" past 14:00 and were mindblown when I said "Well yes I can come and pick him up, but I'll probably arrive at about 15:00 when he'd be coming home in the taxi anyway" at which point he became well enough to go home in the taxi.

The ideal parent is someone whose kid never gets sick, is home all day and lives 2 minutes around the corner for when they become under the weather at school, I suppose.

You quite literally said she is now dead

Totally, and all the detail about sepsis etc. An awful thing to post. Absolutely no surprise that loads of posters thought the sister was dead. The poster in question has gone very quiet now. Hopefully quite rightly ashamed.

The 18 is for the first and eighth letters so AH for Adolph Hitler. I don’t need to google 88 thanks because it wouldn’t make me budge from my view that accusing someone of being a nazi because they’ve got 88 in their username is poor behaviour.

Well what can I say you're naive about this and you're going to stay naive because youre still arguing despite not taking two seconds to Google something 🤷🏻‍♀️

A lot of these PP couldn't give a shit about your child or the other children in the school, they just get a little dopamine hit being nasty to a mother online. Also don't seem to understand how jobs work.

Yes but I couldn't add a quote to the thing I originally added a quote to so I wrote a whole new post.

I don't really want this to derail the thread too much though. My opinion on the actual post you are not being unreasonable I once had the school phone me up at 2:15 to say my son is Ill I got there and he was perfectly fine 🙄 could easily have stayed for the final 45 minutes. The people guilt tripping op about not being able to pick up early every single time the school says DC is ill must be unemployed.
It is what it is but try to understand some people actually have to work and can't just leave whenever

SuperCat123 · 23/11/2023 12:21

This happened to my daughter in yr 2, I went to pick her up to discover her being sick in a bag!!! The teacher said, "this is the 1st time she has been sick, otherwise we would have called you" she had a raging temp & had been telling them she was unwell since before lunch time & it was actually the 2nd time she vomited, & she did it twice more in the short walk home! Needless to say they took her seriously after that

The OP picked up her kid two days ago. There's nothing to derail.

I've never heard 88 in any connection with AH. It's just not commonly known. This is like Greta being accused of anti-Semitism because she had a mood octopus. Sometimes Octopuses are just Octopuses.

88 is different from an octopus. Like I said I've seen many neo Nazi accounts use 88 in their user ame on other sites usually accompanied by 14 aka the 14 words. In hindsight I doubt the poster knows this and probably was just using her birth year. It just caught my eye based on things I've seen on sites like Instagram.
I do apologise to the poster though if I'm wrong

You’re not taking on board what I’m actually saying.

My point is NOT that 88 has no Nazi significance whatsoever and there’s definitely nothing anywhere on the internet to suggest otherwise.

My point IS that accusing someone of being a Nazi because they have 88 in their username is a shit thing to do. You look really silly tbh, because there’s such an obvious possible alternative explanation.

That’s why I’m not googling.

bahhamburgers · 23/11/2023 13:00

Jesus christ, we’ve ended up on talk of nazis and faking the death of a loved one.

eastegg · 23/11/2023 13:01

I’ve just seen your belated apology. That’ll do for me I suppose. End of.

Leah is clearly a fan of Steps though. Too much of a coincidence otherwise.

I have 88 in my instagram name just because I love 8’s but gonna change it right now 🫣

You love 8s?

willyconker · 23/11/2023 14:02

I used to be a ta in reception. If school are calling because she's clingy and not herself then go get her. I'm all for sending them in with a cough and cold. They need to build up an immune system. But if she's hanging onto the teacher or ta then she's not well. If she's cracking on then great. But she's obviously not.

8 is also a lucky number in China so presumably 88 is twice as lucky

She's at home. Was picked up two days ago.

We're on Nazi symbols now.

LilaRose97 · 23/11/2023 14:11

WTF?

If you’re 4 year old needs calpol first thing before school then they are not well enough to go. Poor poppet, if she has a bad cold you should have kept her at home for a couple of days. She’s probably exhausted from having to go into school all day when she’s unwell!!!
