AIBU to not pick 4 year old DD from school?

marshyrun · 20/11/2023 11:10

DD2 is 4 and in reception. She’s had the usual on off cough / colds since starting in September and is just coming to the end of a bad cold, she went to school throughout with me just giving her calpol in the mornings.

She woke up today absolutely fine, had breakfast, in good spirits. Still a slight cough but had some calcough before leaving.

School have just called to say her teacher has said she’s not herself, they checked her temp (all fine), she doesn’t feel sick or anything, they’ve said she’s just being quiet and clingy and not enthusiastic about participating in some of the activities. They’ve asked me to come and collect her if she’s still being “clingy” after lunch.

AIBU to not pick her up unless she’s actually poorly? I’m the first one to drive to school if my child is poorly but this doesn’t seem to be the case today. She’s naturally shy and quiet anyway so her being reserved is not out of character at all!

Why did you send her in all week with what you deem as a bad cold? If it’s bad, keep her off!
one of mine has bad asthma and when he catches these bad colds people send their kids in with he’s hospitalised 🤦🏻‍♀️

That's horrible for your kid, but it has never been expected for children to be kept off school just because they have a cold. I send mine in with colds all the time.🤷🏼‍♀️

kneehightoacat · 22/11/2023 19:07

I agree.

hairfoilsgo · 22/11/2023 19:08

Pick her up we sent kids home today exactly like this!

they've been dosed up on calpol and sent to school repeatedly when what they really need is a few days off to recover and it finally catches up with them and then they end up upset and clingy

Pick the poor kid up and give her a few days rest to recover... this is exactly why kids are always ill because they are constantly sent into school unwell

Tessabelle74 · 22/11/2023 19:10

Personally she'd have been at home during the worst of it. Why are you sending a poorly 4 year old to school? If they need Calpol to get through the day, they shouldn't be going! Absolutely awful parenting 😞

If your child needs Calpol they're too poorly for school! Shit parents like you are why bugs rip through schools and the fact you don't even consider anyone that could be really ill is a shocking reflection on you!

CALCOUGH IS NOT CALPOL

THE GP RECOMMENDED THE CALCOUGH BEFORE SCHOOL

ffs

I imagine it's because working parents can't get unlimited time off of work. Especially a single parent who has no help.

It isn't awful parenting to do what you need to do to pay the bills and be sure that your child is fed and clothed.

It isn't ideal but I can understand it. Especially when it's something minor like a cough and a cold and they've already been to the GP.

Dinkydoo17 · 22/11/2023 19:19

She's 4. Whether it's emotional or physical they've been astute enough to pick up she's not herself. Pick her up. Give her cuddles.

LuvSmallDogs · 22/11/2023 19:20

@Tessabelle74 Shit parent? For sending a kid to school with a snotty nose or slight cough? Neither I nor OP mentioned sending children who required Calpol. You're ridiculous.

BooBooDoodle · 22/11/2023 19:22

We always do the school test. If we think they are ok to go to school with say a sniffle or a cough and they last the day, fine, sometimes it’s a good distraction and a great lesson in teaching them that we must plod on sometimes when we don’t feel 100%. Having said that, my kids are now 9 and 13, not 4. Huge difference in what they need and want. 4 year olds are clingy because they need and want you when sick so pick her up and make a fuss until she’s feeling better. She’s only little and school wouldn’t have called otherwise.

Peablockfeathers · 22/11/2023 19:26

Aw bless her, I do empathise OP it's so stressful having to take lots of time off due to illness, its good the TA spoke to you about what the issue likely was in the end.

That's horrible for your kid, but it has never been expected for children to be kept off school just because they have a cold. I send mine in with colds all the time.🤷🏼‍♀️

The problem is 'just a cold' varies between parents. If they're hacking their guts up, have discoloured snot, a temp and are generally feeling like shite then they should be off; sure if a regular cold then they'd never be in!

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 22/11/2023 19:29

I’ve been really poorly before but no temp etc, just feeling rubbish. I can totally see that in a small child this could play out as quiet and clingy.

if they feel concerned enough to call, then I’d collect.

So yes, she DID mention Calpol and my opinion stands. Sending poorly kids that need Calpol to get through the day to school is shit parenting. I've got 4 and I work and I say this with confidence, my kids are home when they're I'll because that's where they need to be

Oh, 4 year olds should man up and not interfere with your career? Puh-lease. She's 4, pick her up.

WinterBerry7 · 22/11/2023 19:17

Wow. You’re a treat.

And your clearly that kind of parent that causes everyone else's child to be poorly because you're too important to be at home 🙄

Gbishywoo · 22/11/2023 19:35

Ahhhh posts like this infuriate me!!!
pick up your child and you should not have sent her with a ‘bad cough and cold’
due to parents like yourself my son is in hospital in hdu with a chest infection he’s caught from nursery because a silly parent sent their child in with the same infection a few days ago🙃 my son is immune compromised and he is on oxygen and cannot breath on his own!! Be more considerate and I hope you realise how serious these things can be.

rosesandbees · 22/11/2023 19:37

So tough when you are a single parent and working full time. As others have said Vicks on the feet is great. If she keeps getting very dry coughs all the time ask them to check for Asthma. After nearly 12 months of a dry cough every month for 10-14 days we have finally been tested for Asthma.
Just waiting for our next appointment. Hope you both are fully recovered soon.

Calcough isn't the same as Calpol and the GP advised her to give it before school. How dare OP follow medical advice!

Are you a single parent? If not, you can't compare.

WinterBerry7 · 22/11/2023 19:39

@Tessabelle74 I don’t have kids. So nope 👍

Are you all struggling with reading comprehension?
