AIBU to not pick 4 year old DD from school?

DD2 is 4 and in reception. She’s had the usual on off cough / colds since starting in September and is just coming to the end of a bad cold, she went to school throughout with me just giving her calpol in the mornings.

She woke up today absolutely fine, had breakfast, in good spirits. Still a slight cough but had some calcough before leaving.

School have just called to say her teacher has said she’s not herself, they checked her temp (all fine), she doesn’t feel sick or anything, they’ve said she’s just being quiet and clingy and not enthusiastic about participating in some of the activities. They’ve asked me to come and collect her if she’s still being “clingy” after lunch.

AIBU to not pick her up unless she’s actually poorly? I’m the first one to drive to school if my child is poorly but this doesn’t seem to be the case today. She’s naturally shy and quiet anyway so her being reserved is not out of character at all!

Don’t know how long ago this was but it’s a bit late in the day to ask on here don’t you think ?

OP was posted 2 days ago.

Are you at home?

why gave you had her in school when she hadn't been well?

shes 4, she's not well, she's not feeling up to participating, what do you think she's getting out of being there?

Except possibly a high attendance certificate at the end of term???

This is a mean little response designed to make the mother feel like crap.

Carpediemmakeitcount · 22/11/2023 17:59

@marshyrun I wouldn't worry what people post on here. You know your daughter and thank god that the extreme posters are not in a position of authority you would be hanged, drawn and quartered by now.

MrsCooper84 · 22/11/2023 18:01

She needs to be at home in order to get over this cold once and for all! If it’s been going on since September, it’s not being given time to heal.

Pick her up and let her get over this illness, for her sake and for the other kids sakes. I’m sure they wouldn’t appreciate being around a bug every day.

Rachand23 · 22/11/2023 18:10

Perhaps you would prefer social services to pick her up! For goodness sake she’s YOUR dd take the responsibility.

Jules2369 · 22/11/2023 18:11

School is an educational establishment it is not childcare. By sending a poorly child in to school you are risking other children getting the same as your daughter and you are also making your child unnecessarily miserable. Poorly children need to be at home, cuddled up with their parents.

Bit dramatic there ffs.

Yabu. She is poorly.. she needs her mum. The teachers aren't calling you for a bit of fun.
What's the problem with picking her up?,have you got something more important to attend to ?

DrMarshaFieldstone · 22/11/2023 18:19

What do parents think Calpol does? It’s paracetamol to treat pain and fever. A child with a fever shouldn’t be in school or childcare. It does nothing to treat a viral infection like a cold. Some parents seem to administer it to their children as a placebo by proxy to make themselves feel better.

OP was at work. I'd say making sure her DD has a roof over her head and food is quite important.

I agree with @Ihatethenewlook 's comment above: "You don’t sound like you care about your little girl much tbh. She shouldn’t have to be at deaths door to get a day off school."

Littlezoo · 22/11/2023 18:25

Why did you send her in all week with what you deem as a bad cold? If it’s bad, keep her off!
one of mine has bad asthma and when he catches these bad colds people send their kids in with he’s hospitalised 🤦🏻‍♀️

Sennelier1 · 22/11/2023 18:25

So you did send your 4 year old with a bad cold into school on Calpol? That poor little girl must've felt awfull, why didn't you keep her at home? Also : you're the one causing the whole class catches it too, right?

Zebedee55 · 22/11/2023 18:26

She's 4 years old, and needs collecting..

Asparagus1 · 22/11/2023 18:28

As someone who works with young kids it drives us absolutely insane when people dispute that their child is ill. They might have been ok when you dropped them off, we aren’t ringing for the fun of it.

Humphhhh · 22/11/2023 18:29

CANCEL THE CHEQUE OP!!

SeaUrchinHat · 22/11/2023 18:37

I wouldn't pick her up unless she's actually poorly.

Define 'poorly'. Children's mental health is just as important as physical health, surely?

SaltPepperPotato · 22/11/2023 18:45

If school are asking me to pick up one of my kids then I do all I can to pick them up. They’re the experts.

IAmMam · 22/11/2023 18:45

Confused at those saying if they need calpol
they shouldn’t be in school? Does no one here ever have to take paracetamol before work for a headache/ cold symptoms?
I pick my kids up every time school call but I would also send them in with a cold/sore throat etc having given them some medicine to ease them, if they can manage it. The amount of colds a child gets a year, for those parents that work, we couldnt take all that time off.

I think it depends if they have been given it for a temperature. If they have, they shouldn’t be in in my opinion. They can go downhill quickly once it wears off.

Pepsi2001 · 22/11/2023 18:49

You are being very unreasonable!!! Your child is ill and probably shouldn't have been there last few days and will no doubt have infected other children!!! But then you already know this but don't want to be inconvenienced by looking after your own child. Bet your the first to moan when coughing children are around your child!

OP said she never had a temp, school said the same.

She also just had calcough before school which isn't paracetamol.

I was replying to PP not OP.

Julimia · 22/11/2023 18:53

Well said. Other side of coin. School should be commended for 'erring on the side of caution

Asparagus1 · 22/11/2023 18:54

Also just to add. Children can feel unwell without a temperature. That shouldn’t be a requirement for them needing to be picked up!
