Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

Take it out in cash on cc?

Getoverit1965 · 18/11/2023 20:29

Withdraw cash from your credit card or do a transfer from you cc to your bank (some cards allow this). Interest rate will be high though and you will have a transaction fee too most likely.

OhMyChickenDinner · 18/11/2023 20:29

Don’t take out cash on your credit card. That’s very bad for your credit rating. Can’t you just explain the situation to your friend?

ChampagneVan · 18/11/2023 20:30

Sorry but that's your problem.

You owe her and you shouldn't expect her to set up PayPal just because you don't actually have the money to pay her.

ShufflingHedgehogs · 18/11/2023 20:30

Sorry OP but if she paid for you then I think you need to repay her in the way she prefers.

I use PayPal all the time myself but lots of people are nervous of it and I don't think anyone should feel they have to set up a specific kind of financial account (especially if they are not comfortable with it) to get their money back.

Can you use your credit card for other things this money, thus freeing up your bank account cash?

It's always worth checking in future how and when people are going to want to be repaid.

EightOfHearts · 18/11/2023 20:31

Hmmm I wouldn't really want to set up a PayPal account either but don't really see what other options you have. If you've explained it's either money now via PayPal or money at the end of the month via bank transfer that doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Xmaspenguin · 18/11/2023 20:31

It's not easy to set up PayPal actually. My email address got hacked and obviously used on PayPal, so now they want me to prove who I am before they will let me sign up. So I just don't bother!

The moral to this story is you should've booked the tickets yourself on your credit card.

Ktime · 18/11/2023 20:32

You need to transfer her money to her bank account.

She did you a favour, you can’t demand she set up PayPal.

Plus PayPal now charge you an annual fee if you have money in your account and don’t log in once a year.

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:32

Something like 28% plus transaction fee to get cash from CC.

She buys on FB marketplace all the time so I assumed she had PayPal

I don't want PayPal either. Why should she?

coldcallerbaiter · 18/11/2023 20:32

It’s unreasonable to insist on PayPal. It’s a faff for people that do not use it. Wouldn’t she have to add her bank acc to the paypal to withdraw it? Bank transfer or cash are more familiar.

This. I haven't got a PayPal account and don't want one.

chocolateanddietcoke · 18/11/2023 20:34

Transfer it to another friend and ask them to get the cash out

Grimchmas · 18/11/2023 20:34

Neither of you are being unreasonable. You just need to work out a way forward.

I'd say to her she can either have the money now with PayPal, or on X date when you gets paid.

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

Yummymummy2020 · 18/11/2023 20:35

I think assuming you knew about and had agreed to the tickets being bought, you should pay her back in the way she wants, even if it costs you extra. It’s unfair on your friend and she shouldn’t need to set up PayPal to get back what is owed in the time that I assume she needs it if she does not want to wait!

DysonSphere · 18/11/2023 20:35

Can't you simply transfer from Paypal to her bank account?

I haven't done it before but I think you can. Don't know If there's a fee.

fingerguns · 18/11/2023 20:36

Could you PayPal another friend and then ask them to transfer the money to the friend you owe the money to?

IGotItFromAgnes · 18/11/2023 20:36

I don’t know anyone who has PayPal, so it seems a weird thing to assume to me!

Buying with PayPal is different to accepting to it, she would need to spend the money or add a bank acc, or some debit cards allow withdrawals too.

You yourself pay an extra fee as well if you pay with credit card.

amicissimma · 18/11/2023 20:37

It's probably cheaper to borrow the cash from your bank for a couple of weeks than to take it from your credit card. Do you have an overdraft facility? Can you ask for one, if not?

I do think it's up to you to pay her back using her preferred method as it's not as if bank transfers are particularly unusual.

I've had all sorts of problems with PayPal in the past, so don't blame her for not bothering with it.

youveturnedupwelldone · 18/11/2023 20:39

It's not her responsibility to sort out a way to receive the money that works for you. You don't actually have the money do you if you need to borrow it to repay her.

Maybe next time you buy the tickets on your cc and she pays you back. But this time you'll have to find a way to get liquid funds to pay her.

Luxell934 · 18/11/2023 20:41

No she shouldn't have to set up a Paypal account to be paid back if she doesn't want to make an account.

I haven't used Paypal for years but can you not transfer the money to your bank account? I'm assuming theres a fee for you if you do this. But then even if friend did set up an account wouldn't she have the same issue with fees transferring it to her bank account?

Creepyrosemary · 18/11/2023 20:42

I don't have paypal and I would find it a too big ask to make a paypal account just to get my money back once.
