Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

Gosh, that's pretty entitled of you to think you can demand she sets up something financial like that, and also that you let her by tickets when you didn't actually have the funds to pay. I think it's wrong to assume most people have it. Put money on your PayPal credit via your linked card then withdraw to bank account (you can add one) . Hopefully that way it won't charge you the cash advance fee by if it first I'm afraid you're going to have to pay that

Prinnny · 18/11/2023 21:15

Why get a friend to buy you tickets that you can’t afford to pay her back for? Pretty shitty behaviour from you tbh especially at this time of year.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 18/11/2023 21:05

I’m sure you can transfer to a bank from PayPal op

Does that still work if your Paypal is linked to your credit card?

I suppose Op is trying to avoid fees?

rookiemere · 18/11/2023 21:19

I have a PayPal account but I've forgotten my password and I never use it. Friends transfer directly to each other's bank account. I'd not want someone to pay me by PayPal either.

Grimchmas · 18/11/2023 20:34

Neither of you are being unreasonable. You just need to work out a way forward.

I'd say to her she can either have the money now with PayPal, or on X date when you gets paid.

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

I don't actually think the friend is being unreasonable - if the OP wasn't upfront with her friend about needing to use paypal, then not the friend's fault. If I lent someone money I would assume they would do a bank transfer or give me cash. I do have paypal, but thinking about it I've only ever used it for online shopping not for personal transfers to friends/family - no-one has ever asked so I assume it's not all that common?

Ohnoooooooo · 18/11/2023 21:21

I shut down my PayPal account when it was hacked and someone was buying iPhones through it. Then I was also forced to use it and had to prove I was me. I just use it as a guest now - I don’t want an account.

PlipPlopChoo · 18/11/2023 21:24

She buys on FB marketplace all the time so I assumed she had PayPal

Assumption is the mother of all fuck ups

MissedItByThisMuch · 18/11/2023 21:25

I don’t think that’s a common use of PayPal at all. And I imagine there would be significant fees for her to get the money back out again. I don’t know anyone who transfers money that way, my friends and family just use bank transfers, much simpler.

Anyway I’m not sure why you can’t just transfer money to her bank account from your credit card account? May count as a cash advance though, in which case you’ll just have to suck up the interest.

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 21:27

It didn’t occur to me that she wouldn’t have PayPal and in my circle it’s very normal to use PayPal for transfers after paying for one another for things like tickets because you can just send to their mobile number and it’s really easy. Hadn’t occurred to me to double check with friend that this was ok.

You can’t transfer from CC linked to PayPal into a bank account without the CC company realising you’re trying to circumvent cash advance fees and charging ~28% but looks like I’m going to have to as friend doesn’t want to wait.

I can afford the tickets - long story short had to buy a car this week and dealer didn’t take credit cards so totally wiped out current account incl overdraft which I haven’t used since I was a student. I’m not a scrounger.

Why is your Paypal linked to your cc?

IGotItFromAgnes · 18/11/2023 21:35

Is your credit card one of the ones that offers special deals for money transfers? That might be better than withdrawing cash on your credit card.

TheBeatles · 18/11/2023 21:36

diddl · 18/11/2023 21:30

Why is your Paypal linked to your cc?

I’d have thought it was quite normal. I often use PayPal to buy things via credit card.

Sallyh87 · 18/11/2023 21:37

I have never used PayPal and would find it weird if a fried tried to re pay me that way.

underneaththeash · 18/11/2023 21:38

I don't do Paypal either! Have you looked at their T&C's

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 21:38

diddl · 18/11/2023 21:30

Why is your Paypal linked to your cc?

Because it means I only give my CC details to PayPal and not every website I buy things from

Boomboom22 · 18/11/2023 21:41

I would never use PayPal. You are unprotected. Use a cc. What sort of weird cc do you have where they charge you 28%? Mine is £3 to use the cashpoint which is annoying if you only want 20 but if 200 not too bad. Or 3% money transfer so £6 for this.

diddl · 18/11/2023 21:42

Yes sorry for some reason I was thinking that you'd be paying PP fees plus CC fees/interest but obviously that's not how it works!

OOlivePenderghast · 18/11/2023 21:44

Given your latest update about having to buy a car and use all your overdraft, I would first try and extend your overdraft. You can usually do it online or in the app. If you’ve got good credit that should be ok. Otherwise I think your only option is to pay the fees for a cash transfer.

Some contradiction here between 3. and 1. You don't seem to be following 3. too closely yourself.

Hoogieflip · 18/11/2023 21:47

@Grimchmas will you be kind enough to give a source for the fact that "most people" have PayPal?

declutteringmymind · 18/11/2023 21:48

Can you not buy her something she needs of the exact value on your credit card???

If she's going to purchase off Amazon or ships at Asda will she accept the equivalent in vouchers???

FarmGirl78 · 18/11/2023 21:48

Get a Curve card, link it to your credit card and then use "Curve fronted" to pay your friend, maybe by withdrawing cash. Dunno the exact details but I'm sure it's possible.

You are certainly being unreasonable by expecting her to set up Paypal when it's your house that isn't in order.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/11/2023 21:48

I don’t have PayPal. Wouldn’t set it up either.

Mine is £3.99 transaction fee, £1.99 cash fee and 28% cash advance interest. I think.
