Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

Can you not buy her something she needs of the exact value on your credit card???

If she's going to purchase off Amazon or ships at Asda will she accept the equivalent in vouchers???

Errr if a friend did this to me I’d be rightly pissed off. She doesn’t want something bought for her, she obviously wants her money back in cash.

If the friend was posting about this, @dessertorchide, she would RESOUNDINGLY be told you're a CF

Kitkat1523 · 18/11/2023 21:51

You owe her the money. You need to pay her.

Yes for sure! I’m not trying to be.

I'd be furious too. The woman spent money and needs to be paid back with money. Not inkind

WiddlinDiddlin · 18/11/2023 21:54

So... link your bank account to your PP.

Its less of a fanny than her setting up a brand new PP account, and you get to choose on transactions where you source funds from (bank, pp balance, cc) so it will make no odds to you, but will mean this issue won't happen again.

Run4it2 · 18/11/2023 21:57

If you have online banking just apply for a loan, and you can pay her from this - then pay back the loan when you're paid. Much lower interest rates

Londonrach1 · 18/11/2023 21:57

you need to give her £200. You shouldnt expect her to set up a PayPal account for that. Just give her the cash now even if you borrow it from the bank. It's not her problem your cash flow problem...she bought the tickets you owe her money.

It's strange you think she PayPal...you never ever ever take PayPal on Facebook marketplace..it's cash on collection only.

Abouttimemum · 18/11/2023 21:59

I think something like 20 million people in the UK use PayPal for online shopping each year, so it’s a fair assumption that someone might have an account (although I would argue never to assume anything….)

however I think using it for purchases (which I do sometimes because clicking the PayPal button is sometimes easier than faffing about entering my card details) is very different to sending someone money on there.

I use PayPal sometimes for buying but I wouldn’t want someone to transfer money into it.

Anyway, if you were my friend I’d wait until you had the cash unless it was going to put me in dire straights of course, but ultimately if she wants it now you need to get it to her.

Boymum2104 · 18/11/2023 22:01

YABU I would just expect an ordinary bank transfer as it's a friend

IAmAnIdiot123 · 18/11/2023 22:01

Does your partner/spouse have a PayPal? If so, transfer the money to their account and get them to send the money to your friend.

That's what I would do, or ask a friend if no SO.

Riverlee · 18/11/2023 20:58

Can’t you just pay her with your credit card if you have her bank details?

You can't pay someone using a cc if they are not setup to accept ccs. It is usually only people in business who are set up to accept ccs.

Mine is £3.99 transaction fee, £1.99 cash fee and 28% cash advance interest. I think.

The 28% should be over a year though so if you are doing it short term it should be negligible.

Viviennemary · 18/11/2023 22:04

No she isn't obliged to set up PayPal for your convenience, it's up to you to pay her back. Not everyone has PayPal.

OneTC · 18/11/2023 22:07

I think you can just pay into people's banks on PP, it's called Xoom

2Rebecca · 18/11/2023 22:09

I closed my paypal account and have no desire to reopen it. I'd expect a bank transfer or cash. Why not transfer the money from your credit card to current account then do a bank transfer

Welshrainbow · 18/11/2023 22:14

If all your friends have PayPal can’t you just send someone else the £200 by PayPal and ask them to pay friend.
otherwise sorry but you’ll need to suck it up it’s not your friends fault and she shouldn’t have to wait till the end of the month for you to give her what you owe her.

thanksroyalmail · 18/11/2023 22:20

i know this is irresponsible but I used to use PayPal to pay off my credit card using funds from same credit card. You basically need 2 PayPal accounts. You send money from account 1 via the credit card to account 2. In account 2, you deposit the funds into your bank account- whether that’s directly from account 2 or by sending the funds to account 1 first. Then when the money is in your bank account, you can send it wherever as normal. Cash without the cash withdrawal fees.

so basically using your credit card to send your mate money is still possible if you take the extra step of making another PayPal account

Muddybooties · 18/11/2023 22:20

Go to the bank and take out £200 using your credit card. Hand it to friend or deposit in your current account and transfer.

HollyJollyRobin · 18/11/2023 22:30

I don't have PayPal and wouldn't set it up in this situation, sorry OP!

UsingChangeofName · 18/11/2023 22:31

ChampagneVan · 18/11/2023 20:30

Sorry but that's your problem.

You owe her and you shouldn't expect her to set up PayPal just because you don't actually have the money to pay her.

This, absolutely.

I don't have a paypal account and would not set one up so that someone who asked me to get them some tickets can send the money they owe me. That is an outrageous request.

It is you with the cashflow issue, so you have to either

  • take the hit on the charges, or
  • ask someone close to you if they can lend it you until pay day, or
  • ask one of "all the other people you know" would be willing to give you some cash if you transfer them the money via PayPal.
SheSaidHummingbird · 18/11/2023 22:38

Maybe ask a third party with a paypal account (friend, sibling, parent) to give you the cash, which you then give to your friend. Then you transfer the money to the lender between your paypal accounts.
