I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

I enjoy quite a bit of his writing but he's definitely shady af.

This morning on the radio he said the SNP are playing to their huge anti semitic power base, and nobody challenged him or asked him what he meant.

I think I might know why

Jacopo · 15/11/2023 17:57

He is a terrible restaurant reviewer, for a start. I had one of the worst meals of my life in a Birmingham restaurant that he had recently recommended.
He is also someone who will happily try to destroy someone else’s marriage by spreading rumours which he then declares to have been made up by himself. If he made it up, he’s vile. If it’s true, and he spread the rumour, and then said he made it up - still vile.
He would never have got the jobs that he has had without the benefit of having had Alan Coren as his father.

bombastix · 15/11/2023 17:59

He is not a patch on his father who was very funny and decent. Giles is one big horror show but nepotism gets you places

itsanopefromme · 15/11/2023 18:02

Vile little nepo-baby. Uses all the -isms in his writing under the guise of humour. It's not funny and clearly comes from his own beliefs. I cancelled my Times subscription and cited him. Sure they were shaking in their boots 😅, but whatever, I'm not contributing to his salary!

CesareBorgia · 15/11/2023 18:05

I really like him !*

*(Just kidding. He's an arse)

StaunchMomma · 15/11/2023 18:08

If we know of so many incidences when he's shown himself to be just a ginormous twunt, can you imagine how many times he's acted like that at home?

I'm not surprised his wife wants rid.

powershowerforanhour · 15/11/2023 18:09

"my wife won’t let me back in the house"

Sensible lady. He was probably coked out of his nasty little mind. In coke and vino veritas.
Where's cancel culture when you need it?
It's not because he's Jewish, it's because he's a vicious horrible brat.

JemimaTab · 15/11/2023 18:11

There was also this memorable Twitter exchange. Which is pretty jaw-dropping. This amount of anger is not normal.

Why the hell hasn’t this idiot been cancelled yet? Surely he has transgressed frequently enough now.

lightinthebox · 15/11/2023 18:13

I used to really like Victoria, it would be really simple to publicly say she doesn’t agree with his actions. She never has so I no longer believe she can be a nice person.

MatildaTheCat · 15/11/2023 18:14

What a coincidence that just this morning his wife, Esther wrote a piece for the Times (about equality of housework) praising her beloved DH for his parenting when things were tough with their son and praising his skills around the house/ admin despite the fact that he was, in general a lazy bastard but hey, Ho….he’s that loveable rogue that we should all aspire to marry. Boak.

ClassicStripe · 15/11/2023 18:14

JemimaTab · 15/11/2023 17:02

I do think he’s lost a lot of work though. That hotels programme, for example. But he still writes for the Times, I think. He’s really benefited from the goodwill towards his father.

Don't say that! That was the reason he took such umbridge against a journalist that when she died in her 30s he said he was going to dance on her grave.

Ninastibbefan · 15/11/2023 18:14

He’s a grade A twat.
This bit from his letter to the subs sounds like parody:
‘I have been away, you've been subbing joe and hugo and maybe they just file and fuck off and think "hey ho, it's tomorrow's fish and chips" - well, not me.’
It’s just how I imagine the Times to be honest.

Ninastibbefan · 15/11/2023 18:14

His poor neighbour, he does sound deranged.

WilheminaModel · 15/11/2023 18:15

From a quick Google search Giles’ wife Esther Walker is also a journalist. She seems to write her own articles, mainly about why she married Giles (his 5 bedroom house and also bizarrely his Ford Escort), and also about suffering from insomnia and anxiety. These articles fail to address the fact that being married to a man who behaves in such an unhinged and abusive way must be a prime cause of insomnia and anxiety for her, and another article about the evils of social media like Tattle also neglects to mention that her own husband used an alt account on Twitter to send himself anti-Semitic abuse in her defence.

I understand that his father was not the benign clubbable man he ipresented as. Not an excuse for his son's appallingness but maybe part of an explanation.

BrexitShmeckzit · 15/11/2023 18:15

The thing is, this behaviour of his doesn't exist in a vacuum. Hopefully you would have seen the signs after a few dates, dumped him and never married him.
I know that it's not always that simple, sadly, but all I can think is " Well yes, he has always been a twat"

I realise mental health is not straightforward, but I often wonder why privileged men like him are so angry. He had a fantastic education, has a great job that most people would kill for ( which he arguably did not have to work hard for), an attractive young wife, a large house in London, lovely children, the opportunity to eat out often in a CoL crisis, a close well-knit family.... what about all this makes you disproportionately angry all the time?

It's not just him. I often wonder this about people who seem to have every advantage.

Two words spring to mind. ‘Brat’ and ‘spoiled’. If you’ve never had to struggle for what you have, you end up believing your privilege is a right. And when real life, being what it is, smacks you with evidence of the fragility of your privilege (because being alpha is a very precarious state indeed, especially when undeserved) you end up constantly insecure, and not uncommonly, constantly angry. Substance misuse is as serious a problem for the rich as it is for the deprived.

Also, people like him need, like working dogs, to be kept busy. They are dangerous when under-occupied.

And his brother-in-law is Alexander Armstrong. I wonder how they get on?

My friend went to a match at Twickenham and both men were there with their sons. She said the kids behaved appallingly and their fathers ignored it. Alexander Armstrong seems lovely on tv but I guess he's just another posh entitled pratt.

Yes what he said to Michael White was vile. I mean unhinged. Like a grown man toddler fit

She is not responsible for her brother, and she doesn't have to say anything!

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 15/11/2023 18:19

Definitely substance abuse. Deep down, I think he hates himself.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/11/2023 18:19

I think his beef with Dawn Foster was that she was blisteringly intellligent and by her early 30s was a staff writer with the Guardian. She started from NOTHING, whereas Giles, with all his influence and opportunities hasn't really made much of his career.

Yet again we have women being vilified for the very separate actions of a man.
