I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

I woke up too early this morning so thought I'd listen to his and his wife's podcast. Well, clearly it's just his podcast and she simply panders to him loving the sound of his own unoriginal opinions. So I ended up falling asleep again to GC going on and on and on.

It's the last bastion of acceptable discrimination though - small man syndrome and all that.

If people (women) stopped having a go at shorter men about their height (as if they can do anything about it, you can in most cases do something about your weight) then maybe they'd have fewer complexes.

Is this a universal thing though or just a Northern European thing, many parts of the world don't have particular tall men.

sadeyedladyofthelowlandsea · 19/11/2023 21:51

@KatBurglar I knew it was love with DP when he used his finger to dab the last of the egg yolk off his plate when we were out for brunch. He did it so naturally because he said 'it was a bloody nice meal!'

Re: the short man thing - is anyone else reminded of the SATC episode where Samantha is dating a guy who's about 5ft 4? He didn't give a toss about his height, which somehow made him sexier. Lying about your height suggests insecurity, which is not something that give many women the fannygallops. Mind you, having read the Bad Sex Award excerpt more often than I ever should have been subjected to, Coren would make me slam shut like an oyster in any case.

You know what - I wouldn’t put it past him to be on here, trolling AIBU under a dizzying number of sock puppet names. I wouldn’t put it past him to have started this thread, or put someone up to it.

I’m not being 100% serious, but you never know online.

The only thing which makes me fairly sure he hasn't trolled Mumsnet is the fact that it's dominated by women. I can't imagine he would rouse himself to troll women - he strikes me as someone who doesn't care too much about women's opinions.

Good article.

Amusingly, after reading this thread, I read Giles' Times column this weekend, where he claimed that the average male height in Britain is.... Five foot nine.
Have no idea whether this is true or not but it made me laugh!

Did Giles claim to himself be of average height at 5 foot 9? Or did he not dare since he’s been rumbled for lying about his height on Mumsnet?

His wife looks quite short and in the photos she they are the same height when she is in heels, I wouldn't say that height is 5ft 9.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 20/11/2023 12:24

She is dinky in RL, all round Kylie tiny. Maybe 5’3”.

WilheminaModel · 20/11/2023 14:49

From the way that she simpers and massages his fragile ego on what little I have heard of their podcast, I very much doubt Esther wears high heels around Giles as that would definitely emphasize his diminutive stature.

I would have thought that but some images online show a heel.

CruCru · 20/11/2023 17:31

I think Esther is around 5 ft 8 - I remember GC describing his wife as a tall woman in one of his columns. In photos, she looks like she is a bit taller than him wearing heels.

I can see that you don't like GC but I don't think it is okay to criticise him for his height. He is a small man - I don't know whether he actually believes that he is 5 ft 9. If he has added an inch or two then perhaps he is sensitive about it. It may also be that he has shrunk a bit now that he is in his mid fifties.

My Dad was a very small man (nowhere near 5 ft 9) and by the time he died he was much smaller than I am (I am not tall).

If a man behaves badly then, sure, criticise him for it. But lets not get at men for their lack of height.

Goldenbear · 20/11/2023 17:48

So she is taller than Kate Moss, she doesn't have the appearance of a 5ft 8 woman at all.

WilheminaModel · 20/11/2023 18:04

I don’t have a problem with anyone being short. I think some short men are very attractive. However, I think it’s extremely unattractive - but also very funny - for someone to pretend to be 5 foot 9 as it’s not really much of a flex.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 20/11/2023 18:55

She isn’t tall. I’ve seen her several times out and about and she is shorter than me.

LindorDoubleChoc · 20/11/2023 19:34

Not defending GC at all, not in the least little bit, but I do hate the way "being tall" for a man seems to be a massive thing in the modern world.

My DS (20) has male friends who are about GC's height who are absolutely paranoid about it. The shame and worry they feel is similar to how young women feel about not being size 8 with a big chest. Not healthy.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 20/11/2023 19:46

I’ve dated attractive short men. Nothing wrong with short guys at all.

CavalierApproach · 20/11/2023 20:16

Same. I recall thinking in my long-ago carefree shagging years that shorter men were often a better fit than tall men, in terms of how our bodies lined up in bed 😁

What is not attractive though is being untruthful and evasive about the simple, perfectly normal fact that you are short, as if it is some huge shameful thing, and overcompensating by being more than averagely aggressive and judgemental towards everyone else.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 20/11/2023 20:38

GC could be 8 foot high but he’d still be a cunt.

newnamethanks · 20/11/2023 21:24

Maybe Mrs Coren is tall when standing next to her husband? Just saying.

WilheminaModel · 20/11/2023 22:33

I think in this photo Giles looks like he is standing on his tiptoes ago make himself look taller.

He’s either on tiptoes or wearing heels 🤣

Saschka · 20/11/2023 23:25

And I am short myself, DH is 5’8, I actively avoid dating taller men because I feel like I am out with my dad. 5’6-5’10 is my ideal height range.

That doesn’t mean it isn’t fucking hilarious to laugh at photos of Giles Coren standing on tiptoes to pretend he is taller than the person stood next to him though.
