To be embarrassed to tell anyone in real life of my major achievemen?

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 12:13

Today I've achieved a goal that I set 7 years ago.

Finally into BMI overweight category for the first time in my adult life.

I'm 50ish and have been trying for so long to achieve this.

I have no siblings and although plenty of close friends my humiliation at being fat for so long isn't something I share.

I lost a lot 5 years ago, then got a fuckit mentality and put 2/3rds of what I lost back on like a decking idiot.

I've battled and battled and finally hit that 30 today.

I know 30 is still unacceptable but it's a big step for me in the right direction.

I'm sure people still look at me and judge, but I try not to let it affect me.

Happy to be candid about this but possibly not a full AMA.

I feel quite flat about it to be honest and not sure why.

I think it's because I don't have a suitable confidante, so maybe there's folk on here who I can anonymously share with and they can empathise, maybe that'll lift my spirit and inspire the last push?

Very well done OP. I lost 8 stone and felt completely flat about it.
Then I realised it wasn't really my fat that was making me sad, it was something else, a number of other things in fact. I just blamed being fat because my doctor, my nurse, my friends all told me how much better my life would be if I lost weight. As long as I had that lose weight goal I had something to strive for and work towards.
And apart from my poor old knees which are better, nothing else is.
Sure, I can go swimming with my friends now and things like that but I still have unresolved issues like childhood abuse and things like that which made me comfort eat and get fat in the first place.
The media and books and magazines all tell you your life will be amazing when you are slim. It won't necessarily be amazing.
You are left with the feeling what now?
You have achieved this goal and that's great but now you need different goals to achieve and things to keep you going.
I always think anyone who has been obese should see a counsellor with regard to keeping the weight off. Because your mental state is a much neglected obstacle in you keeping the weight off and becoming a happier person.

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 13:30

@MargotBamborough

Was 22 stone 12 pounds

I'm 12 stime 12 pounds today.

11 stone 6 would be exactly half. I might aim for that

PhoebesHusband · 15/11/2023 13:34

Bloody well done that lady! Hurrah!
You say that you are not an ambitious person in several ways. But you are you know, you are tenacious. Perseverance counts for so much.
Print that number 53.3 on something so that you see it every day. So that it becomes a cue to remind you of your achievement. We all need to enjoy our successes more than we usually do.
Did you exercise much?

Please tell me how to get below 14st I am stuck🙂
Enjoy your day.

Fernticket · 15/11/2023 13:35

You are entitled to celebrate it. Be proud.👍

PestilencialCrisis · 15/11/2023 13:35

Amazing! It is such hard work to lose weight and even more to maintain the momentum. Don't downplay what you have achieved - it's incredible!

ShinyPebble32 · 15/11/2023 13:35

Well done!!! It’s bloody hard work losing weight, you’ve done amazingly

stayathomer · 15/11/2023 13:36

LightSpeeds · 15/11/2023 13:37

Well done you!! AMAZING achievement! 😀🎉🥳

Glassesfrompubs · 15/11/2023 13:37

Aw OP, you should not be ashamed of where you were! You are ROCKING IT and have achieved something to really be proud of. Well done you!

spookehtooth · 15/11/2023 13:37

Absolutely you should be proud of it. It's possible to both be proud and aspire to another target. They're not conflicting things, they support each other

Separately, you mentioned about a previous setback & how you reacted. I think kindness in those moments is a key for long term progress. Nobody is 100% consistent at anything they do, there's no exceptions. Managing negative emotions in those moments & reminding yourself of that helps minimise the impact. I hope it doesn't sound preachy. Its something I've only really understood and worked on in the last few years in other areas of my life, and for me it was quite an emotional revelation for what it revealed about me

RecoveringBorderlineIsBack · 15/11/2023 13:40

housethatbuiltme · 15/11/2023 13:08

Its like the 'laughing at the fat person in the gym' thing... reality is most people won't but even if someone did you're bettering yourself and it will benefit YOU so screw them.

Bettering yourself isn't something to be embarrassed of even if it took longer than you hoped.

@housethatbuiltme you are absolutely correct.

Phonedown · 15/11/2023 13:40

That's amazing op. Well done. I really think it becomes harder to lose weight if you have lost it previously and then put it back on again. It can be so demoralising. So the fact that you've managed to get down to a healthier weight for you is even more an achievement.

Jeevesnotwooster · 15/11/2023 13:42

Congratulations! That is a great achievement.

I'm nearly at the same point as you (although with less to lose but probably not helped by the massive chocolate brownie I've just eaten)!

What I am enjoying is feeling better moving about, having more wardrobe choices and generally fitter. Hope you get the same benefits 🙂

Raspberryjamsandwich · 15/11/2023 13:45
