To be embarrassed to tell anyone in real life of my major achievemen?

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 12:13

Today I've achieved a goal that I set 7 years ago.

Finally into BMI overweight category for the first time in my adult life.

I'm 50ish and have been trying for so long to achieve this.

I have no siblings and although plenty of close friends my humiliation at being fat for so long isn't something I share.

I lost a lot 5 years ago, then got a fuckit mentality and put 2/3rds of what I lost back on like a decking idiot.

I've battled and battled and finally hit that 30 today.

I know 30 is still unacceptable but it's a big step for me in the right direction.

I'm sure people still look at me and judge, but I try not to let it affect me.

Happy to be candid about this but possibly not a full AMA.

I feel quite flat about it to be honest and not sure why.

I think it's because I don't have a suitable confidante, so maybe there's folk on here who I can anonymously share with and they can empathise, maybe that'll lift my spirit and inspire the last push?

That’s amazing OP! Well done! Keep up the hard work 👏

HanarCantWearSweaters · 15/11/2023 12:49

My BMI is hovering around 51 atm. You’ve made me wonder if I really can do it after all. Been trying for over 20 years and it seems hopeless. Like you I lost a lot a few years ago and gained most of it back in the last 2. I’m really proud of you OP.

Peridot1 · 15/11/2023 12:52

Wow. Well done you! That’s an amazing achievement. The health benefits will be huge for you.

I’ve gone from obese to overweight too and it’s a bloody good feeling!

it might be an idea to maintain for a bit now to get used to where you are. It sounds counterintuitive but it might give your body a chance to kind of sit with the loss so far. Have you heard iof the book “Why we eat (too much)” by Andrew Jenkinson? He is pretty good on our body’s set point and why we do that whole feck it thing. It’s not a failing. It’s normal.

DCINightingale · 15/11/2023 12:52

Wow OP that's just amazing! Well done!!

cantseethetrees · 15/11/2023 12:52

Congratulations, you should be really proud of what you have achieved, it's bloody hard work, especially as we get older.

Openmouthinsertfood · 15/11/2023 12:52

As someone currently on a weight loss journey, I know how hard it is. You've done so well, and kept at it. Well done you! 🌟You haven't given up, that takes guts. You really should be proud of what you have achieved. A big WELL DONE from me! Smile

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 12:52

Hullo!

Initially I did Slimming World and lost 95% of what I wanted to in 20 months then I reassessed and thought losing that last bit wouldn't get me anywhere near a normal BMI so my brain went a bit squirly and over 4 years put the majority of it back on.

2 years ago I started calorie counting and have now achieved what I wanted.

Very well done. Reaching a goal in something that is difficult for you is always an achievement and you deserve to be proud.
Sometimes people who aren't particularly emotionally intelligent find it difficult to relate to things they themselves see as "easy" or "nothing special" but others can find difficult. This can sometimes make us feel uncomfortable or embarrassed talking about our accomplishments. This is their limitation though so don't let dampen your amazing weight loss.

babyproblems · 15/11/2023 12:55

Amazing op. Well done! Do something nice for yourself to celebrate xxx

AdoraBell · 15/11/2023 12:57

Well done. It’s not easy and you’ve done bloody well. Keep looking after yourself, your health.

CornedBeef451 · 15/11/2023 12:57

Congratulations!

I'd love to be just overweight so well done you!

WoollyRosebud · 15/11/2023 12:57

Good for you. I hope you are going to give yourself a treat of some sort. I had my hair cut when I reached my halfway weight loss target earlier this year. It was a real incentive to keep going too.

Peablockfeathers · 15/11/2023 13:00

Amazing, congratulations OP! 30 is bloody brilliant when you've worked hard to reach it.

Snazzysausage · 15/11/2023 13:01

Heaven knows I understand how difficult it is to achieve what you have. A huge well done from me,you're entitled to feel very proud of yourself! 👏👏

SirenSays · 15/11/2023 13:02

Congratulations OP! All that hard work is paying off. You should be mega proud of yourself

BeetyAxe · 15/11/2023 13:03

Can I suggest moving away from BMI as your goal? BMI is a really clinical thing and there's isn't much wiggle room between healthy weight and "obese".

If working to targets it something that motivates you, maybe try breaking it into smaller chunks with goals that are meaningful to you. Specific weight, clothing size etc. Something where you can reach it, take stock, enjoy it and then look to the next goal.

I just don't think it's necessarily healthy to put in so much hard work and effort to then click on a screen and see the same negative term flash up at you time and time again. There are definitely better indicators.

It's not that BMI should be ignored but, no matter what way you set goals, they'll all benefit your BMI anyway.

Jacopo · 15/11/2023 13:06

Fantastic achievement!! Very well done. Enjoy getting out and about, I’m sure you will find walking and other activities so much more enjoyable now.

Sallyh87 · 15/11/2023 13:07

Well done! Massive achievement 🍾

Dillane · 15/11/2023 13:07

Wow that’s brilliant OP, we’ll done 💐

housethatbuiltme · 15/11/2023 13:08

Its like the 'laughing at the fat person in the gym' thing... reality is most people won't but even if someone did you're bettering yourself and it will benefit YOU so screw them.

Bettering yourself isn't something to be embarrassed of even if it took longer than you hoped.

RecoveringBorderlineIsBack · 15/11/2023 13:09

Well done! I'm obese and working on losing weight. I don't feel I can talk about weight to my friends and I completely get why you posted on here.

You have done so well and have a lot to be proud of. If its ok to ask, how did you manage it?

KatBurglar · 15/11/2023 13:11

Huge congratulations on your achievement!

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 13:12

I'm kind of just using BMI as it is a standard and comparable.

My achievement today also happens to be 10 stone and I'm not in size 14 clothing

I'd like to lose another stone ish and then try to stabilise at that.

I'll need lose skin removal surgery for stomach and thighs in the future, I'm aiming for summer 2025 for that if and only if I can prove I can stabilise an 11ish stone loss.

That might remove a few more pounds.

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 13:13

Above are my true goals!

The BMI and 140 pound loss today was just something quantifiable.

A milestone really
