To be embarrassed to tell anyone in real life of my major achievemen?

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 12:13

Today I've achieved a goal that I set 7 years ago.

Finally into BMI overweight category for the first time in my adult life.

I'm 50ish and have been trying for so long to achieve this.

I have no siblings and although plenty of close friends my humiliation at being fat for so long isn't something I share.

I lost a lot 5 years ago, then got a fuckit mentality and put 2/3rds of what I lost back on like a decking idiot.

I've battled and battled and finally hit that 30 today.

I know 30 is still unacceptable but it's a big step for me in the right direction.

I'm sure people still look at me and judge, but I try not to let it affect me.

Happy to be candid about this but possibly not a full AMA.

I feel quite flat about it to be honest and not sure why.

I think it's because I don't have a suitable confidante, so maybe there's folk on here who I can anonymously share with and they can empathise, maybe that'll lift my spirit and inspire the last push?

I am SO proud of you, OP

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 12:19

Oh thank you all. 💐

I thought there'd be some naysayers as I shouldn't be being proud of 30.

I know exactly how you feel. I had a little private celebration when I got down to that. Yes to some it might not seem much, but rightly or wrongly it mattered to me to have gone down from the obesity category. Celebrate!!

Georgeburgess · 15/11/2023 13:15

That is amazing. Really well done. Someone close to me struggled with chronic obesity. It seems impossibly difficult. I think we often feel flat when we achieve huge goals? Did Alexander the Great sit down and cry?

ArthurbellaScott · 15/11/2023 13:15

Brilliant, OP! That's wonderful. Flowers

user1492757084 · 15/11/2023 13:16

Congrats!!

SunshineAndFizz · 15/11/2023 13:16

Oh wow you've done amazingly well!

Don't focus on negativity of what your were - celebrate the achievement of where you are today. It's not easy by any stretch of the imagination - it's bloody hard work.

TheChosenTwo · 15/11/2023 13:16

Well done op, you’re right to be proud of your achievements, you’ve worked hard to prioritise your health and that should be celebrated 💐

ChocolateCinderToffee · 15/11/2023 13:16

What is your daily calorie limit? Do you exercise?

Cornettoninja · 15/11/2023 13:16

A milestone really

and a tangible one.

Look at that, you absolutely can do it. Be proud of yourself and have faith that you can push it further. Don’t let that pesky brain convince you otherwise. Tell it to get to fuck.

Redebs · 15/11/2023 13:16

That is actually heroic.
Well done!

GoingToInfinity · 15/11/2023 13:17

I totally get it! I had a BMI in the 50s and dropped to 28. That step from obese to overweight is incredible and you should be so very proud of yourself!

Even if you don't drop any more, this is a substantial life altering change. You will have so many health benefits from what you've already achieved. I am absolutely thrilled for you!

GrumpyMuleFan · 15/11/2023 13:18

That's a huge achievement. Above all, you have significantly improved your health and longevity and reduced the risks of lots of illness and pain. And also, what a good way to treat yourself. Taking care of our bodies, giving them what they actually need nutritionally instead of what they want in the moment, is a huge step for people with overeating disorders.

You are only 3 points above me on the overweight scale, and although I am big, I can climb mountains, walk long distances, go bootcamps, yoga, kayaking. It's very possible to be fit and strong in the overweight category. Harder, i think, in the obese category.

Buy yourself some gorgeous new clothes.

Its like the 'laughing at the fat person in the gym' thing... reality is most people won't but even if someone did you're bettering yourself and it will benefit YOU so screw them.

Bettering yourself isn't something to be embarrassed of even if it took longer than you hoped.

So true. I'm not totally unconfident in myself and my looks but there are things that really put me off and one was the gym environment, changing rooms etc.

I'm at the stage now where I wanted to integrate more activity beyond walking (10,000 steps a day was becoming too samey). My DP is a chef, works long hours and had a back issue so the physio told him he needed to get some other activity that put his body in a different position than hunched in a kitchen or lying on a sofa. Swimming is the only thing he's ever enjoyed so I agreed to go with him as motivation. I was silently dying inside at the thought of getting my top off and walking into a pool full of people. As soon as I did, I realised how many people are just in the same boat as me. Not so much as a sideways glance. Loads of people with disabilities, overweight and other health conditions just trying to do a bit better for themselves. In amongst all that are the "healthy", 6-pack bastards just going about their business. I feel like they get judged more then I do 🤣.

ThankYouVeryMuchGerry · 15/11/2023 13:19

Bloody brilliant achievement! Well done OP!

Consideringachange2023 · 15/11/2023 13:21

Well done OP. That is a major, major achievement.

I have battled my weight and struggled with an eating disorder for 20+ years, getting on top of it and staying consistent is not an easy feat and it’s not something that should be underestimated.

You should be immensely proud of your achievement and absolutely celebrate the discipline and dedication it would have taken you to get here. You’ve got this 👍🏻

Tessasanderson · 15/11/2023 13:25

Bravo.

Set a new goal and smash it to pieces.

nutbrownhare15 · 15/11/2023 13:25

Well done OP! My DH has recently achieved the same milestone. What worked for him was cutting out alcohol, cheese and bread and walking 10,000 steps a day.

MargotBamborough · 15/11/2023 13:26

I voted YABU because you should be proud of yourself, not embarrassed. Well done and keep up the good work.

Chattydolls · 15/11/2023 13:27

Huge well done OP! I’m working on the same myself and it’s so hard! 👏

MargotBamborough · 15/11/2023 13:28

10andcounting · 15/11/2023 13:13

Above are my true goals!

The BMI and 140 pound loss today was just something quantifiable.

A milestone really

Good grief, have you really lost half your body weight?

20 stone down to 10 stone?

That's an amazing achievement.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 15/11/2023 13:28

Wow, that is amazing! I am in awe of your commitment.

Do you think that you're scared to say it out loud in case you jinx it? You shouldn't be, it's hard work not luck that's got you here, so nothing to jinx!

Bellyblueboy · 15/11/2023 13:29

I am in awe - 10 stone is a huge weight loss and it must be life changing. You should be incredibly proud.

what are you going to treat yourself with the mark the occasion? I punish myself for being overweight by buying dowdy clothes (I am only realising this now😂). When I get back to a size 12 I am investing in some classic and fabulous items for my work wardrobe - bring back the confidence. Started at size 16 - fitted in a size 14 shirt today🥳

Myhusbandismywholepersonality · 15/11/2023 13:29

Absolutely amazing achievement! I’m early thirties with PCOS and it’s a battle every day to try and lose weight, I’d be ecstatic to have a BMI of 30!
Buy yourself something nice to celebrate and enjoy the moment xx

MsRinky · 15/11/2023 13:29

That is bloody amazing, well done.
