Dave Cameron is back in the cabinet…. desperate throw of the dice or inspired move to limit the inevitable defeat?

By the time the GE rolls around, large swathes of the electorate will have forgotten Johnson, Truss, Cruella and the whole shit show. All they will remember is the slightly-more-moderate face of the Tory Party and damage will be limited.

I don’t think you’re totally wrong here. I know a lot conservatives voters. (Area I live in is full of them). They’ll not forget Johnson in a hurry or Truss. They’re living with their decisions every single day and all I hear is “it’s time for a change, they’ve been on power too long”.

Yes, this is the Tories attempting to save the party from total oblivion for many years to come. Sadly, despite him presiding over Brexit and, ultimately, the demolition of the UK by pandering to his right wing (and failing to insist on a super majority) there are still thousands upon thousands of Tory faithful who will see his return to Government as a good thing. By the time the GE rolls around, large swathes of the electorate will have forgotten Johnson, Truss, Cruella and the whole shit show. All they will remember is the slightly-more-moderate face of the Tory Party and damage will be limited. Labour will be in power for one term, be unable to unpick the gargantuan mess the Tories will have left the country in, and will swiftly be voted out again by an electorate with collective amnesia and Stockholm Syndrome. Especially when a newly invigorated Tory Party tells everyone it is in fact Labour's fault that they've been unable to fix the gargantuan mess. It happens time and time again. Tories fuck the country over, over many years. Labour get into power. People blame Labour for not making enough progress quickly enough. Tories spin an elaborate re-hash of history. The cycle begins again. The Tories are actually really, really effective at re-writing history. It's why they've had the vast majority of years in power, over decades. Party first, country last. Always.

But last time Labour were in power they lasted 3 terms under Tony Blair and then had definitely run out of steam by the time they were (deservedly) voted out in 2010

Has Nad revealed who Dr No is? I can't keep up.

Dougie Smith apparently.

SerendipityJane · 13/11/2023 14:42

But last time Labour were in power they lasted 3 terms

But why ?

Because the Tories went through a period of lunacy that saw 3 different leaders before Cameron finally made them electable again.

If they want to see the same thing happen again, then they were on track for it. Lose the next GE and then descend into a parody party with loads of factions trying to get the edge. People who are following the travails of the paralysed US House of Representatives - in particular the total impotence of the speaker - might have an idea.

The Swinger party organiser!

AutumnCrow · 13/11/2023 14:51

I wonder if Sunak was threatening to walk, and the Party gave him Cameron to steady the ship and do all the work. Or something.

Eleganz · 13/11/2023 14:54

Well if ever there was a sign that the bottom of the barrel has been well and truly scraped through.

I do wonder if we'll see the letters of no confidence start rolling in from the Tory right.

He hasn't the spine. This is much more likely to have been "suggested" to him. In much the same way the Windsor framework was. By someone who isn't a completely tone-deaf, self obsessed, narcissistic headbanger. Which means someone outside the Tory party.

Mind you, as I have just thought. If Cameron can comeback, then so can Prince Andrew. Maybe he's the new Children's minister ?

I'm worried that her book is going to so out of date by the time it is published next week it will just have to be pulped.

DontListenToWhatYouveConsumed · 13/11/2023 15:51

@jgw1 that would just be so sad ......
My heart bleeds purple pish
D "pig molester" C, Rishi "spineless twonk" Sunak and the rest of the Tories can fuck themselves.
I'm done with the lot of them.
I'm another voting 'homeless ' atm.
Starmer has as much charisma as a slug I once stood on. But slugs politics were clearer (not the reason I stood on the slug).
The UK is definitely sliding slowly into Hades.......

Labour need to bring in PR then. It's the only way to stop the Tories destroying another generation when they're next back in when Labour inevitably run out of steam.

You can't have one party in too long, whether it's Labour or the Tories.

Whether the Tories every govern again depends upon who they elect as their next leader. If they go for Braverman or another ERG member then they may well be finished as a serious political force.

We said that when they were appointing the likes of IDS and Howard after the 1997 drubbing. When it comes down to it they'll do anything for power. They'll let Labour have their turn, have an internal crisis and then do whatever it takes to win.

But if PR came in then they're finished as a political force.

I'm concerned that Dave will be having talks as FS that MPs can't question him about. I'm not sure that's ideal for UK given the state of things in the world.

Mysteriously winning governments forget they ever suggested that.

If you wanted to unwind some of the more lunatic elements of Brexit in private, it's hard to think of a better way.

Personally I very much doubt that's the reason But it is enormous fun to float it as an idea past the Brexiteers and see them descend into apoplexy (a word we don't use enough these days)

The Speaker is apparently taking advice about this. But I'm not sure what Lindsey Hoyle has in mind.

In fairness, the Speaker is currently looking at ways the Foreign Secretary can be held to account by MPs, and there are a few options on the table. Lord Carrington was Foreign Secretary during the early part of Mrs Thatcher’s period in office, and I think Peter Mandelson was a Lord when he came back as Business Secretary under Gordon Brown.

To see that smug, fat, shiny face again, after all the mess he left. NO!
I suppose it'll be that dumbcluck George Osborne next.

I must say dumbcluck is an excellent description of George Osborne, I might if it is ok, borrow it.

They’ve been affronting democracy for years. Remember proroguing Parliament? Ennobling the revolting David Frost? Introducing compulsory voter ID? They’d make elections illegal if they could get away with it.

verdantverdure · 13/11/2023 17:57

It "rearranging deckchairs on the Titanic", "tell us most of the 350 Tory MPs can't be trusted with responsibility" desperate stuff.

And it's undemocratic.

Time we had a General Election I think.

Spinnymop · 13/11/2023 18:05

The old bait and switch..

"Yeah, Cruellas gone!"

<David Cameron pulls up to number 10>

"Oh, fuck me"

Even Eastenders couldn't write it.

Pebbles16 · 13/11/2023 18:39

And how much botox has Dave had?!!
@verdantverdure I agree with you
this is so much nonsense that I am even more ashamed of our government party
