to expect dd to tolerate her brothers playing while she's trying to sleep?

Mastmw7g · 13/11/2023 05:39

My 10 year old likes to sleep late, but her brothers wake up early and play in the mornings. They make noise when they play. I think it's a good thing because they're spending time together and not on screens. But dd keeps getting upset that they wake her up. Then she comes out of her room and it starts a fight and dh gets upset because that wakes him up and he also likes to sleep late.

Of course it's normal.

Not in my house it isn’t! Mine only slept until then when they were teens - and then I didn’t pander to it. From 9 I’ve got the washer on and the hoover going.

beachcitygirl · 13/11/2023 16:57

@Celebrationsnakes YOU'RE the one who said being in bed until 10 was a waste of a day.
Some of us are trying to get you & others to see that's just bullshit.

Some people sleep late & stay up late
Some people get up early & go to bed early.

None of those things mean wasting a day.

I'll take My chip & raise you your judgey pants. (even tho you deny wearing them)

Mushroo · 13/11/2023 16:58

@Maray1967 if you’re not in a detached house bet your neighbours really love that early morning hoovering.

It is wasting MY DAY. Nobody else's and I do NOT care what anyone else does Grin

At 9 am, of course it's ok to vacuum and wash etc! The works is up and awake, shopping deliveries, children playing in gardens, DIY etc, all fine at 9am!

Would you really be unhappy?

They should learn respect for others. Just watch morning TV ffs.

Edited

God forbid they might have any time away from screens

Pipistrellus · 13/11/2023 17:56

I think whether the time matters depends on what you want to do with your day. With children many activities are outside, particularly if you are trying to make sure young children get their three hours a day. If you have only 8 daylight hours then you would want to minimise sleep time during those hours. That still leaves a lot of flexibility as we are awake far longer than it is light in the winter.

No, you may not want to be out all day, but if you are going somewhere with someone who is up at 11 and leaving the house at midday, when rain is expected at 1pm after a lovely morning then it does get annoying.

I'll be honest. As someone whose family are European, I very much judge people in the uk who are desperate to get their kids to bed by 7 7:30
Usually for "adult/wine" time.

I like my kids. I like their company. I like lazy long family meals that last till 9/10pm or later at weekends. I like socialising with my kids and I like long lazy lie in with a good book.

I usually silently judge but given the bonkers "up with the lark" "wasted the the day" nonsense on here.

I'm coming out.

I struggle with the overtired 4 year old who can't cope and starts hitting screaming and snatching every afternoon but is off to another family gathering every night

9am isn't early to hoover some will be mowing their lawns

Whiteday · 13/11/2023 19:15

@Mushroo of course I would, you'd likely cut the cord and electrocute yourself as it's too dark to see the cord!

It might be worth you checking your local council website about "sociable hours"

I think you'll be surprised to see 8 am is go for it, with drills, lawnmowers, vacuum cleaners and washing machines!

😂 I have electricity.

I know about the rules - but to me 9am and 11pm are equitable in that they are times people might very reasonably be asleep, so out of courtesy, don’t do noisy things.

I obviously wouldn’t actually hoover at 11pm because I’m aware it would disturb people - it’s a shame early risers don’t offer the same courtesy.

chillidoritto · 13/11/2023 19:32

Some of the comments about the daughter on here are outrageous. If she was blasting loud music while her brothers were sleeping, the smug early rising lark types would soon have something to say!

I have 5 children and even my pre schoolers can play in such a way that they don’t disturb the older ones who enjoy a well deserved lie in at the weekend! And yes, I do stick the TV on because I’m not a morning person myself!!!

Night hours for noise are typically 11pm to 7am.

After 11pm is more equitable to before 7am as both are 'night time hours'. I personally would prefer not to be disturbed after 9pm so I would extend the same courtesy and keep noise down before 9am.

Whiteday · 13/11/2023 20:07

@Mushroo of course you've got electricity, you must be using tons of it! Because you're up all night and asleep all day GrinGrin

Luckily the rules prevent you from being unsociable!

Thank fuck!!

beachcitygirl · 13/11/2023 21:02

@jannier oh I'm so
Sorry you've got those type of kids. Must be rubbish.
Mine are sociable and pleasant and get very long lies at the weekend

Pinkietoe · 13/11/2023 21:57

Do not let a 10 year old rule the house. She needs to be up and doing by 10am not grumbling at her siblings for waking her.

What time is she going to bed and to sleep??

Caterpillarsleftfoot · 13/11/2023 22:02

8 am is normal/ later end of normal for children to get up.

10 is ridiculously late for anything other than a student or bartender to get up.

Just go to bed earlier and get up at a normal time.

Why is it “ruling the house” if the daughter wants more sleep, but perfectly alright for the boys to dictate what time it’s okay for everyone to be woken?

Tryingtrying36 · 13/11/2023 22:06

I was the child that was always woken at weekend by noisy parents and siblings. It’s really inconsiderate I think. They’d be shouting up and downstairs and all sorts. Why can’t people be quiet and let people sleep? Fair enough if it’s lunch time. I’ve taught my kids to be quiet as am haunted by this when I was a kid. Obviously haunted is a bit of a strong word but I think it’s really insensitive. My Dsis still does the same and has taught her kids to do the same from about 5am! Yikes!

CaspianPlover · 13/11/2023 22:07

8 o clock bedtime is far to early for a 10 year old. If she was to join the Girl Guides their time is 6.30 to 8.30. For a 12 year old if in the Scouts its 7.30 to 9.30. Your older children are growing up.
It seems as if the youngest is dictating the bed times and getting up times.

Because some mums pander to and mollycoddle their sons more than their daughters
