Is she? A feminist icon I mean? I’ve always considered her quite self absorbed and self indulgent. That’s when I think of her at all!

I think they saw themselves as artists breaking barriers and stuffy old conventions but as always people will justify doing what they want. Including old men sleeping with young women.

Museum1066 · 11/11/2023 19:19

Omg

TomatoSandwiches · 11/11/2023 19:24

I don't think she has ever been considered a feminist icon.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/11/2023 19:26

She’s not a feminist icon, though.

She’s just a regular person.

KrisAkabusi · 11/11/2023 19:28

Yoko Ono has never been an icon, feminist or otherwise.

And how can you cancel someone that doesn't do anything?

CaptainMyCaptain · 11/11/2023 19:29

She has never been a feminist icon. Personally I didn't like her or John Lennon they were both self absorbed twats although he was a good song writer.

CesareBorgia · 11/11/2023 19:30

I get a bit tired of the 'Yoko as villain' narrative.

We'll probably never know the full story of Lennon's affair with May Pang, but John and May were adults and free agents. Yoko may have encouraged it but she couldn't force them - even the article you've linked says:

"May only acquiesced when it became clear Lennon was attracted to her after he kissed her in a lift on their way to a studio. 'Desire overcame the guilt and awkwardness,' she shrugs.

Lennon was, in many ways, a nasty piece of work. Yoko was far from perfect but she's not the monster people try to paint her as.

As for her status as a 'feminist icon' - I don't know that she herself has ever claimed to be one. She's not responsible for labels others may put on her.

Supersimkin2 · 11/11/2023 19:33

Yoko’s a bloody good artist. Underrated now as can only be expected, but she’s one of the parents of contemporary art.

Her parents put her in a loony bin to dissuade her from pushing her ideas but she got out and carried on. She’s had a horrible life but she’s brilliant.

yesterdaytoday · 11/11/2023 19:33

She’s monstrous. Every bit as wicked as her worst detractors claim.

Ponoka7 · 11/11/2023 19:35

I agree that Yoko gets a lot of flack. The woman was 22, in the 70's that was a proper adult and it wasn't on Yoko that John shagged May. Yoko gives a lot to Liverpool, she's genuinely interested in the projects she takes on.
The stones were getting 13 year olds drugged up and having sex with them, along with Bowie, but let's demonise a woman who gave permission (because what else could she do) for her husband to be unfaithful.

thedevilinablackdress · 11/11/2023 19:35

I'd rather ask why John Lennon hasn't been 'cancelled' for being a wife beater.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 11/11/2023 19:37

Oh get a grip - and bore off with your "cancelling" nonsense 🙄

This in spades

Not on Yoko? There was no giving ‘permission’ - she pimped her young assistant out to her husband. She ordered May to do it.

Also emotionally and physically abusive to his son. Commited GBH on others, drug and drunk drove etc etc. He left Yono with lasting injuries thanks to crashing his car.

That isn't what the article says.

That is not 'being ordered' to do it. She fancied him!

Well, he did crash his car, that’s true. But it was because he was blind, not drunk.

Of course, they were both on heroin at the time.

yesterdaytoday · 11/11/2023 19:46

And if you read May Pang’s book (which might be out of print now), she certainly was ordered by Ono to sleep with John.

Unwisebutnotillegal · 11/11/2023 19:46

He beat his first wife so the dynamic of his second marriage may have been similarly abusive.

LunaNorth · 11/11/2023 19:46

I still can’t get over Yoko Ono making Julian Lennon buy back his letters to his father.

That takes a heart of steel.

theduchessofspork · 11/11/2023 19:47

She’s never been seen as a feminist icon. Why would she be?

Not to mention evicting John’s uncle from the house John bought him and moving her lover into the Dakota on the night John was killed.

Big, big questions about what happened to John that don’t add up. She was lucky Chapman admitted it and that the police didn’t investigate.

WoollyBat · 11/11/2023 20:19

Not a feminist icon to me!

I know she has her own career, but to me she's like girlfriend in Spinal Tap, where the band are all pissed off that one of them has his girlfriend be the "manager" and brings her on tour and she ruins the vibe.

And yes aside from that Lennon was deeply unpleasant in some ways and it sounds like both John and Yoko treated May badly when she was really young and vulnerable.
