I am a big Beatles fan I believed this story that was in the press that portrayed her as cold, heartless & manipulative….. until I watched a documentary called Lennon: The New York years. It shows yoko Ono herself tells from her perspective what happened. He was getting off his face & they were at a party he took another woman into a room & slept with her, whilst Yoko was there. That was the reason they were apart for 18 months or the ‘lost weekend’ it completely changed everything I thought I knew about her,& other women I looked back over my life & realised we have been fed a narrative about certain women, the perfumo girls, Linda McCartney, Jane Asher, Yoko, Meghan markle, Diana, Fergie the list goes on. It has taught me not to believe everything that is written in the press especially the daily mail.

Self and obsessed spring to mind.

WoollyBat · 11/11/2023 20:26

I don't agree that we've been "fed" the same narrative about all the beatles' and other famous men's partners and wives - far from it. There are multiple narratives and of course it's hard to discern the truth about people you don't know. I don't feel I've been sold a story that Yoko is a "villain" though.

OhNoForever · 11/11/2023 20:29

Love yoko. Lennon was a tiresome prick tho.

LittleGreenDragons · 11/11/2023 20:30

Didn't know she was an icon. Things you learn on Mumsnet.

Why hasn’t she been cancelled?
And just fuck off with this cancelling shit, it's not funny or clever, it's bullying.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 11/11/2023 19:26

She’s not a feminist icon, though.

She’s just a regular person.

She's neither a feminist icon nor a normal person

That was the party where he screamed ‘I wish I was back with Paul’, wasn’t it?

No sympathy for Ono from me. She knew what she was getting into when she went after John. And where was her sympathy for Cynthia when she was sitting in Cynthia’s kitchen wearing Cynthia’s dressing gown?

bombastix · 11/11/2023 20:51

Not sure she is. Yoko Ono seems to have been pretty manipulative at times, and rather controlling if you believe the saltier biographies of John Lennon.

Not to mention evicting John’s uncle from the house John bought him and moving her lover into the Dakota on the night John was killed.

Big, big questions about what happened to John that don’t add up. She was lucky Chapman admitted it and that the police didn’t investigate.

I have always thought there was something oddly choreographed about John Lennon’s murder - the build up to it, him giving an interview the day before announcing that life begins at 40, her giving an interview revealing their schedule, minute by minute, and the exact route they took to and from the studio then sacking John’s bodyguard a few days before he was shot, her repeated use of the word ‘phony’ in I’m Moving On, her affairs with the two Sams, and on and on.

After 40 odd years, I think it’s reasonable to wonder who knew what and when about what happened to John Lennon. And I’d include John Lennon himself in that as well.

Anonymous45789 · 11/11/2023 22:28

She sacked the bodyguard?

Busephalus · 11/11/2023 22:33

Feminist icon? What now?!

yesterdaytoday · 11/11/2023 22:44

She didn’t exactly sack the bodyguard. She gave him a leave of absence until the day after John was killed.

elgreco · 11/11/2023 22:47

John Lennon was an absolute prick.

yesterdaytoday · 11/11/2023 22:55

I’d never thought about her use of ‘phony’ in I’m Moving On before, but it’s surely no coincidence that it was Chapman’s (and Holden Caufield’s) favourite word.

Oblomov23 · 11/11/2023 23:02

Icon, feminist, never.

whynotwhatknot · 11/11/2023 23:10

has noone ever heard the song i will be youryoko ono

Exactly. It obviously has to do with Chapman’s programming.

SecretsOfSunshine · 11/11/2023 23:17

That’s what I thought tbh

CesareBorgia · 11/11/2023 23:20

Now we're descending into conspiracy theory.

user1469301451 · 11/11/2023 23:22

Then there’s the stuff with Chapman himself. A part time security guard who somehow had enough disposable income to go gallivanting around the world and with an interest in art collecting. It’s … troubling.

ThinWomansBrain · 11/11/2023 23:27

Feel a bit sad for May Pang, desperately selling tales of who she had sex with 50 years ago.

yesterdaytoday · 11/11/2023 23:28

CesareBorgia · 11/11/2023 23:20

Now we're descending into conspiracy theory.

So we should close the discussion down, should we? How convenient.

CesareBorgia · 11/11/2023 23:30

I'm not saying it should be closed down, just that the idea Yoko was sending coded messages to Mark Chapman is far-fetched.

The proud owner of a Norman Rockwell and a Salvador Dali, no less.

Seriously, it’s a lot less far fetched than Chapman being an art collector.
