When do you think it is acceptable to put up Christmas decorations and tree?

I’ve still got geraniums in bloom !!!! Can’t have Christmas decs and geraniums!

Sallyingon · 10/11/2023 23:00

We always do ours the first weekend in December and I quite like it down before we go back to work after the Christmas break which can be before the 12th night..I think Christmas celebrations have moved forward and it's an all December thing now.

emblemsaplenty · 11/11/2023 07:26

Seriously though. 12 days of Christmas is when my tree and decorations will be up, as is traditional.

These people who cannot delay gratification are so sick of the damn tree and decorations because they put it up on December 1st, or earlier, are the same who start the threads saying 'AIBU' to take the blasted tree down on Boxing Day?' (and by that point it probably is a bit dusty).

Buy some fairy lights if you want sparkly lights and a warm feeling, hun, but the festival doesn't begin for some time.

That's not 12th Night though is it, from when you put it up. If you count...

Do you take it down on Boxing Day?

I feel it makes it less special being up so long.
I assume people who put it up early, then take it down really early, do so because they are sick of it by then.

Yes. My neighbours have had light-up Rudolph out for a week already. Takes the edge off to see it there when the trees still have leaves.

Dec 1 is plenty. To epiphany.

We had a kitten last year - be warned! We had to get rid of our real tree early as he ended up with a tic above his eye from climbing it and then wouldn’t leave it alone! We replaced it with our fake one but he was relentless 😁

We have a fake one luckily. He's 10 months now but still crazy and into everything

RampantIvy · 11/11/2023 08:26

I don't care what other people do but, personally, I prefer to keep Christmas at Christmas, not start it 6 weeks before. It doesn't feel special if it goes on for so long and then Christmas itself is such an anticlimax.

Dinglewoop · 11/11/2023 08:29

I'm putting mine up tomorrow and sometimes it doesn't come down until march 😅. I usually leave it up until the weather starts getting nice again

JNW11 · 11/11/2023 08:32

I've put mine up and I don't care if
People judge it's
My house and I do what I please!
So if you want to put your tree up go for it and enjoy the cold, dark nights with your Christmas tree up x

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/11/2023 08:35

You are a lunatic, it's not even Remembrance Sunday yet. No wonder people complain Christmad goes on too long.

Our decortarations are mainly real greenery so up on the last Saturday before Christmas day and down on Twelfth night.

Don't get me started on people who remove them on Boxing Day, the best part of Christmas are the days between the 26 Dec and 2 Jan.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 08:42

Candles, lamps and fairy lights exist to warm up dark nights people!!! Save Christmas for Christmas.

Nanalisa60 · 11/11/2023 08:42

First weekend of December , up til about the 5th January

Coatscoatscoast · 11/11/2023 08:43

Depends where you live as well, round here lots of houses are decorated for Diwali so some Christmas lights would blend right in 😁

You've put your tree up at the beginning of November Shock. Wow. What ever for? Couldn't you wait.

Why the 'x' at the end of your post? I haven't really seen that on Mumsnet before I must say.

Coatscoatscoast · 11/11/2023 08:45

Ours goes up usually first weekend in dec then down before new year. December/advent is Christmas and I like to start the new year with a clean house. I hate going back to work/school with it all still up. We have a January birthday in the house

Aquarelles · 11/11/2023 08:47

I'm so so so tempted to put mine up Smile I live alone now so there's nothing really stopping me!

I'm going to get my fix from browsing all the Christmas aisles in our local stores and put the outdoor fairy lights up today.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 08:47

Mumsnet rule= nobody should ever be expected to put up with the abject horror of having Christmas decs up when it’s their birthday!! Years of therapy will be needed if they do have to suffer this abuse.

43ontherocksporfavor · 11/11/2023 08:50

Going to be quite mild next week (14c) where I live and sunny. My geraniums will like that. Might get a cup of coffee outside in a sunny spot in my garden. 😎

TheKeatingFive · 11/11/2023 08:52

You've put your tree up at the beginning of November . Wow. What ever for? Couldn't you wait.

But why would she wait? Because you don't like it? Why would she care?

emblemsaplenty · 11/11/2023 08:56

December/advent is Christmas

Advent isn't actually Christmas though. Advent is usually a period of preparation before celebrating the nativity. Candles are the more usual 'decorations' associated with this. Though some people put up their Nativity scene now (the stable) and start to add further figures as the month progresses. Not trees and light-up plastic santas.

Because it's November. Hmm

TheKeatingFive · 11/11/2023 09:00

Because it's November.

And ... so what? 🤷‍♀️

As far as am aware there are no laws against decorating your own house as you please, regardless of what month it is.

Coatscoatscoast · 11/11/2023 09:01

Sorry I should said December/advent is Christmas for me early morning typo. I like the feel of it before Christmas. Also, the jan birthday is DH and he wouldn’t give a shit, but it’s me being ‘tidy’ in my head 😂

Mazuslongtoenail · 11/11/2023 09:04

The people that put them up early seem to relish taking them down on Boxing Day (yes, yes, I’m judging ‘people’ by Instagrammers).

I think it’s a shame because there’s the whole of the 12 days of Christmas.

For me, start of December and definitely don’t take it down until after New Year’s Day - keep eating those chocolates and feeling festive over the final week of the year.
