To wonder how Vernon Kay got away with it?

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 10:03

"In 2010, Kay was forced to apologise to his wife after it was revealed in the British press that he had been sending sexually explicit text and social media messages to model Rhian Sugden every day for four months. Later on, he admitted to sending similar messages to "four or five" other women at the same time." (From Wikipedia).

I was just wondering about it as I have him on the radio working at home today.

We would all have been telling Tess to LTB on here. I actually don't think he did anything physical with any of them, but I wouldn't have stayed with him.

I remember when this came out and Vernon seemed to disappear from public view.
I guess he won over a new audience with I'm a Celebrity and the BBC obviously decided that people have short memories. Nonetheless I was quite surprised to see him walking into such a prime spot.

10HailMarys · 07/11/2023 11:30

It doesn’t really matter whether you would have stayed with him, because it’s not your marriage.

Clearly, Tess Daly thought about it, and decided it was something they could overcome as a couple. Plenty of couples’ marriages do survive this kind of thing, or worse, so it’s not particularly shocking to me that she chose not to leave.

All relationships are different and we have no idea what theirs is like or what their dealbreakers are. It’s none of our business. I don’t think I could get past it, if that were my DP, but it’s perfectly understandable that some people might feel differently and I wouldn’t judge them for it.

newnamethanks · 07/11/2023 11:31

It's time you got a new hobby OP. Wtf is it to do with you? When Mrs VK asks for advice, stick your oar in then. He sounds horrible as described on here so am glad I have no idea who he is, nor his wife.

reclaimmyboobs · 07/11/2023 11:32

Why stay? They’re both B-list so together have more star power than solo, together have more money and a nicer lifestyle than solo, even with money it might be easier to raise kids as one unit than separately, massive mortgage and lifestyle affordable together but not twice over so a split would be quite a change and quite disruptive, anything for a quiet life, perhaps he has form and that’s her deal with the devil, etc.

LTB is easy on a keyboard directed to a stranger on MN but it’s quite an undertaking in reality; perhaps she cba and now 13 years have gone by it’s long forgotten. Except by people haunting Wikipedia, apparently.

It's a fair point that lots of men get away with this sort of public cheating on their wives and it doesn't dent their careers (or marriages). Doesn't happen so much with women who cheat on their husbands, everyone knows about it and they stay popular, apart from Amanda Holden. It's probably just old-fashioned stuff about men being allowed to shag around but women are harlots and temptresses if they do.

I'm not sure about that. Aside from Amanda Holden I remember Zoe Ball's cheating on Fatboy Slim being a big tabloid story at the time, but it hasn't adversely affected her career. I think once someone is an established celeb, whether male or female, a bit of extra marital jiggery pokery isn't going to end their career.

MissingMoominMamma · 07/11/2023 11:38

He’s a twat, that’s a given, but many people are and still keep their jobs.

If Tess has chosen to forgive for the sake of her kids, I think the rest of us should shut up about it for their sakes too. It must be horrible for them to have it raked up at intervals.

And let’s face it, we can switch him off- they all have to listen to him over the breakfast table- poor sods.

OneTC · 07/11/2023 11:39

Do you think someone's career should suffer if they fuck about with other consenting adults?

Stroopwaffels · 07/11/2023 11:41

That's between him and his wife though. You don't know what goes on behind closed doors and YABU to think other people should make the same decisions as you.

SallyWD · 07/11/2023 11:41

What do you mean? I expect most people in showbiz have cheated. Are you really surprised that someone who sent dirty messages still has a job?
He didn't do anything criminal.

Chanelbasketballandchain · 07/11/2023 11:43

Onethingatatime23 · 07/11/2023 10:30

I guess he admitted it and Tess forgave him. It was up to her really, AFAIK there was no criminal element to it. Unfortunately it's not against the law to be a twat.

50% at least, of MN posters would also be in jail if it was 😂

BoohooWoohoo · 07/11/2023 11:44

Iirc he admitted it quickly and Tess forgave him so things were quickly forgotten.

MojoDaysxx · 07/11/2023 11:45

It's should just be private business between the couple.
Who cares about people we've never met.

Scorchio84 · 07/11/2023 11:45

Blondebutnotlegally · 07/11/2023 10:49

He absolutely should not lose his job and neither should the other woman. Cheating even emotionally is shit but doesn't call for one's whole life to be entirely down the pan. Its none of our business why they stayed together really, we don't know what conversations went on bts and shouldn't judge her for that

Absolutely agree with this

He's one of the main reasons people are leaving Radio 2 in droves.
I had an MRI the other week and they played his show through the headphones, worst 45 mins of my life!

Radio 2 is always on at the dentist too. I always wonder if they switch over when Jeremy Vine comes on.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 11:50

@Bookworm1111 - first question - because I wanted to. Second question - I didn't say the Express was a reliable news source. You said anyone can put what they want on Wikipedia and I told you where they got it from.

Do you? This is not what I was asking.

It’s somehow always the woman at fault in these situations. She obviously decided it was in her best interests to forgive him and move on, it was also over a decade ago so unsure why this thread is even a thing… He messed up, he shouldn’t have been texting anyone else but it’s easier to forgive that than actual cheating imo. It doesn’t make Tess a doormat or pushover.

Applebottomjeenz · 07/11/2023 11:52

This is nothing to do with you. Why do any of you care? Have you nothing going on in your actual lives?

Moveoverdarlin · 07/11/2023 11:53

I don’t think the texts were explicit, Rhian Sugden said they were flattering and flirty. Would I throw away my marriage and have my daughters have divorced parents because of texts to a pretty girl? I don’t know, possibly not. They seem very happy and solid now and I think he’s paid the price. His career 100 percent dried up as a result of it and it’s always mentioned in any article about him so that must be mortifying for him, especially as his daughters are adults.

I’m glad they worked it out. Imagine how different their lives and daughters lives would be had they split?

I also think his Radio 2 show is pretty good.

We’re on Mumsnet.

Bobbotgegrinch · 07/11/2023 12:01

What exactly do you think he got away with? You say you're not talking about his career so I presume that you're on about his relationship with his wife.

In which case, unless you're his wife how do you have any idea what his relationship is like now. Maybe he's still apologising daily, maybe he spent 3 years on the sofa. You have no clue and neither does anyone else here.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 12:01

I don't understand why everyone is commenting on "Vernon shouldn't lose his job". I didn't suggest that he did. This happened a long time ago and I'm sure they've got over it. It just popped into my mind whilst he was on in the background this morning. I thought about how he got away with persuading his wife that what he did wasn't that bad after all.

OP posts:
Middleagedmeangirls · 07/11/2023 12:03

It's not illegal to cheat on a spouse so there is no reason why anyone should lose their job for it.

it's absolutely immoral and Tess would have been justified in leaving him but she chose not to and that's her business.

Moveoverdarlin · 07/11/2023 12:03

Got away with it? It was 13 years ago and there are strangers posting on public internet forums about it still. I would say he definitely didn’t ‘get away with it’, he probably regrets it to his dying day.

FrenchandSaunders · 07/11/2023 12:03

Christ it was over ten years ago! People make mistakes.

It's a very British thing to want someone to lose their family, career, everything over a silly mistake.

He didn't work for years after that ... like someone else said it was I'm a Celeb that got him back in the limelight. And I love his radio 2 show.
