To wonder how Vernon Kay got away with it?

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 10:03

"In 2010, Kay was forced to apologise to his wife after it was revealed in the British press that he had been sending sexually explicit text and social media messages to model Rhian Sugden every day for four months. Later on, he admitted to sending similar messages to "four or five" other women at the same time." (From Wikipedia).

I was just wondering about it as I have him on the radio working at home today.

We would all have been telling Tess to LTB on here. I actually don't think he did anything physical with any of them, but I wouldn't have stayed with him.

One last time:

I DIDN'T SUGGEST VERNON SHOULD HAVE LOST HIS JOB!

Clear now? Jesus.

This post may get deleted but I was working in the media at the time and the gist was that Tess was aware of this/even being involved but they made a call to sacrifice his career rather than hers as she had such a clean rep with SCD.

Dixiechickonhols · 07/11/2023 12:04

No one know what goes on in anyone’s marriage.
They had been together a long time and had two small children. The it wasn’t physical probably helped.
Lots of women in wife’s position would stay - financial reasons, practical reasons if she needed him to work eg have children while she was away filming, stability for children, not missing seeing your children each weekend or missing every other Christmas with them, not wanting to navigate step parent/half siblings situation. Personal beliefs re marriage and relationships eg if they come from stable parents still married through ups and downs wanting same. Suspect it’s common in industry ‘everyone at it’
You wouldn’t have stayed she did it was her choice.

This is what I mean. We have absolutely no idea what the set-ups in people's marriages are and to assume it's always b&w bastard man cheating on saintly woman who should LTB is naive. She might get her jollies on him putting it about. She might put it about. They could be kinky satanists for all we know. Leave them to it OP. They're celebs not priests and their marriage is their business.

TheKnittedCharacter · 07/11/2023 12:16

I have always thought Vernon’s a sleaze since this story came out. But ours is not to reason why he seemingly got away with it🤷‍♀️

Some women can forgive and move on. Some of them are in the public eye and have their ‘brand’ to consider as well.

Look at Victoria Beckham, Coleen Rooney and, allegedly, Kate Middleton.

ChatBFP · 07/11/2023 12:23

I don't think he did get away with it really - I mean, he reached a private settlement with his wife (and hasn't publicly misbehaved again), his Wikipedia entry shows he cheated and they basically lost out on all the "family values" type advertising stuff that holly willoughby and Stacey Solomon etc do (I recall them doing some before it was clear he had a roaming eye).

And most of mumsnet thinks he is a wrong un, judging from this thread.

He is a competent DJ and hadn't done anything illegal, so I have no issue with him being a presenter. He no longer trades on family values in the same way, so I don't think you can say he is a hypocrite.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 12:25

@ChatBFP I like his radio show. I used to be a Zoe Ball fan but not so much lately and I enjoyed the breakfast show when he covered for her.

OP posts:
littleripper · 07/11/2023 12:29

At the time he did was I have seen these weak pathetic men do a thousand times, he blamed her. He said her success had made him feel insignificant and irrelevant and these women helped his ego. She agreed to staying together, I assume for the children. It is very sad, he utterly humiliated her. She seems pretty awesome.

notacooldad · 07/11/2023 12:29

Why are you bringing this up now and why Vernon Kay when there are dozens that have done worse more recently?
What's your agenda against him because very odd after all these years when there hasn't apparently been a repeat of his behaviour.
I'm not a VK fan or anything but this looks like is a thread to bash someone for the sake o it.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 12:33

@notacooldad - Read the whole thread. In case it is TLTR for you however:

It popped into my mind as he was on the radio this morning. Simple as that.

Any agenda I have against him is the construct of your imagination as I have not said anything like that at all.

There were threads on here about it at the time.

His pr team did a good job at saving his image.

I agree. I like his radio show, his wife decided to forgive and maybe forget. That is how he has 'got away with it'. The woman who he texted has been popping up in the papers sporadically ever since, which I would imagine is punishment enough. Its not the Victorian times. Nobody should be pearl clutching about what other people decide to do in their own marriage.
Colleen Rooney as others have said is still there and probably wishes all Wayne did was send some dirty texts to someone. But even she has her reasons. She probably knows that there is a queue of women who would marry Wayne for the cash, leaving her children spending time with another woman half the time and having half their inheritance taken away by all his future wives/children. As she is, she has a nice lifestyle and a husband who is with her full time and owes her. So what?

I didn't say you had. I asked if you have as it was something so long ago and was covered to death on here.

FrustatedAgain · 07/11/2023 12:46

It was 10 years ago, I imagine its water under the bridge for them now. If she forgave him that's their business. His career did go downhill for a while, Family Fortunes was given to Gino Di campo, he had went on I'm A Celeb not that many years ago in an attempt to revive it, and for a pay check! I like listening to him on radio 2.

I wasn't on here then. I imagine it would have been talked to death about though.

I don't understand why everyone is commenting on "Vernon shouldn't lose his job". I didn't suggest that he did. This happened a long time ago and I'm sure they've got over it. It just popped into my mind whilst he was on in the background this morning. I thought about how he got away with persuading his wife that what he did wasn't that bad after all.

It’s an odd way to think about it in terms of persuading what he did wasn’t that bad. She’d been with him 10 years, two small children one just a baby, living nr London miles from family support. Working a job with irregular schedules. Quick google she had a catholic marriage.
I’d imagine it was more a do we throw everything away for nothing physical. Lots of women would have made same call. It’s a very personal decision.
13 years later they are still together and appear to have raised children together successfully- eldest at uni not on love island. She’s maintained her career.
How would life have looked if she’s chucked him? He’s have remarried perhaps some glamour model or influencer, children would have half siblings, kids paraded in ok magazine and instagram outside her control. She’d miss time with children - give up every other Christmas Day with your children. Perhaps unable to work to same extent without him at home to parent so career affected. New partner from same industry also like to do same or worse.
Totally her decision to make.

How did a rich and famous man get away with dubious behaviour?

It'$ a My$tery.

JoanThursday1972 · 07/11/2023 12:54

@FrustatedAgain That would be the burglar who broke into Paul Young's house and did time for it replacing a presenter who had sent flirty texts to women? Though Paul Young has moved on from it.

This happened 13 years ago.

Are you jealous of them?

My haunch is that with this sort of 'remote' cheating, much like the EA, fewer people probably split up than MN would advise. I've known of several couples where this sort of thing has gone on. Lots of inappropriate messaging and boundary crossing but no (proven) physical affair, and the couple have stayed together. In reality, it's far easier to type LTB from the comfort of your own home than it is to completely change your life and that of your DC, often for the poorer, over something its possible to minimise to tolerable levels if you're sufficiently motivated to do so.

ClassicStripe · 07/11/2023 13:17

The OP has literally linked the article referenced and I'm sure lots of us are old enough to remember it being all in the papers.

jazzyfips · 07/11/2023 13:17

Tess is as much of a dick as him and the marriage is one of convenience.
