Would be such a shame not to continue the discussion.

I would not ever vote Tory. However I'm struggling to find my home on the left. I feel like Labour are really not offering a proper alternative. Keir Starmer is just a yes man for the media, not a proper leader of the opposition. He's so busy fence sitting he forgets to have an opinion.

😂
What media is he a "yes man" for?
The BBC spent all yesterday evening with the headline story being the Labour mp rebellion, rather than the story that the actual prime minister has decided to get round British law with emergency legislation so he can send a small handful of immigrants to Rwanda.

The Times and Torygraph are as right wing as ever, the express and mail are Tory tactic post brexit.

Loads of Conservatives have shows on GB news, I don't think any of the labour party do.

You do say some funny things. Media yes man. That's really tickled me.

Bit racist ?

it really is the fault of the polls, coming over here and blaming the Tory government for the chaos, venality and degradation over the last 13 years.

No one wants to blame the voters who gave them an 80 seat majority because they could get Brexit done. It is like the whitewash of not blaming the populace for the excesses of the Nazis. It was the electorate that voted for them and then sat back to watch them play politics and push their incompetent mates into the HoL while riding roughshod through the fabric of this country. It is the electorate who still thinks they are right. If you put a turd on your head, you can’t then complain that it stinks.

A clear majority of people did not vote for the Conservatives though. I refuse to be blamed (I have never voted Tory in any case) for something that only a minority supported.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 17/11/2023 10:14

Oh, and as for the Nazis, they never gained majority electoral support whilst there was still a valid voting system in place. In a move you might think sounds familiar, when they couldn't get their way, they changed the law until it put them in full charge of everything.

bombastix · 17/11/2023 10:23

Has anyone read Braverman's article in the Telegraph? She is a far right politician, advocating for something like fascism. It's all there in black and white.

People who support this stuff should be shunned.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 17/11/2023 10:26

I can't read it as I'd have to pay - fuck that

bombastix · 17/11/2023 10:26

Don't pay and take me word for it. It's a disgusting article

The Bill must address the Supreme Court’s concerns regarding Rwanda
Parliament is entitled to assert that Rwanda is safe without making any changes to our Rwanda partnership.
However, for substantive and presentational reasons, it would be preferable to amend that agreement to address issues identified by the judges. This could include embedding UK observers and independent reviewers of asylum decisions.
It is less important whether these commitments are embodied in an amended memorandum or a new treaty.
What is crucial is that they are practical steps to improve Rwanda’s asylum system. On the basis of these new commitments, Rwanda’s safety could be credibly confirmed on the face of the Bill.
Swift removal must mean swift removal
Those arriving illegally must be removed in a matter of days rather than months as under the Illegal Migration Act. This means amending the act to ensure that removals to Rwanda are mandated under the duty to remove, with strict time limits. This will streamline the Home Office process as much as possible, so that the only Home Office decision is to determine whether an individual falls within the scheme or not.
Those arriving here illegally must be detained
Legal challenges to detention must be excluded to avoid burdening the courts, making it clear that detention is mandated until removal.

An extract. This woman isn't even a democrat

SerendipityJane · 17/11/2023 10:35

The word "dictator" comes from a clearly defined line back to the Romans, who could appoint someone a dictator in times of crisis.

The last dictator they appointed was Julius Caesar. Whose slow demolition of the centuries old safeguards of the Republic ultimately led to the horror show that was the Roman Empire, as well as his own assassination. The civil war that followed eclipsed the civil war that preceded.

A recurring theme of the recently revived "I Claudius" (from Suetonius et al) is the longing in the first decades after Christ of a return to the Republic.

The lack of deviation from that path by todays crop of wannabee strong persons is too close for coincidence. It's impossible not to feel someone is deliberately trying it out in the UK and US like the mother of all A/B testing.

They won't even succeed in stopping the boats, as it’s clear that migrants won’t be deterred from getting on the boats. There was a very interesting BBC report this morning that demonstrated this. These people have been through too much to get to Calais/Dunkirk to give up on their dream of coming to the UK now.

As for Rwanda, a lot don’t believe it will happen anyway (and they’re probably right!). Some also say that even if they end up in Rwanda, it’s better than what they left behind anyway.

Yes, there are fewer boats coming here, but this is because of what the French are doing to stop them. But the migrants don’t give up, they just try again at a later date. They’re all still there waiting for their chance to come.

The Tories must know this. It's all about making a show of doing what they can to stop the boats. Then when it doesn't work, they can blame it on ‘lefty’ lawyers.

I wonder how many have tried to swim the channel. And died a lonely death doing so ?

People used to swim from Cuba to the US.

The total wasted – almost 100 times what would be needed to raise junior doctors’ wages by enough to end their strike action – is up from £70bn to almost £100bn since this newspaper last reported it in November 2022. The figure is equivalent £1,500 for every UK adult and child – or nearly as much as the education budget. And it comes ahead of Wednesday’s Autumn Statement, in which Chancellor Jeremy hunt is expected to slash benefits.

Fury as Tories wasted £100bn of taxpayers' cash in 4 years since 2019 election

An average of £25billion was wasted by the Tory Government every year since the 2019 election – almost all when Rishi Sunak was Chancellor or Prime Minister, claim campaigners

That's wild! Would pay for the odd nurse or two. And maybe a few mince pies for the food banks.
