Why do they irrationally annoy me? Is it anyone else?

ActDottie · 21/10/2023 11:15

Yanbu they annoye me too! I think because our neighbours have one and I absolutely despise our neighbours!

Baby is due January and my husband and I discussed getting one and the concenus was no way because the neighbours had one and we don’t want to be like them 😂

Jelllytot · 21/10/2023 11:15

We never used to have one but the below has happened to us four times now so we got one because we're a bit nervous now:

We'll be driving and a car will overtake us and break really harshly and suddenly when the road is open and clear and we have to slam the breaks. It happened

  1. Moving off from traffic lights when they went green
  2. A dual carriageway where the speed limit went from 40mph to 20mph because of roadworks
  3. Another normal 20mph road in east London
  4. Same road as number 3.

Also DH is a new driver and sticks to speed limits very carefully.

A Baby on Board sign will make zero difference. Arsehole drivers are arsehole drivers. They don't stop being arseholes because of a sign.

Are you referring to the car badges or the ones pregnant women wear?

I dislike both types.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 21/10/2023 11:24

Ha! When this was first a (massive) thing, I was so irritated by it when commuting into Central London on my motorbike that I put a sign on the back of my bike that said "Bored with your baby".

Legendairy · 21/10/2023 11:26

DappledThings · 21/10/2023 11:24

I dislike both types.

I thought the ones women wore were for things like on the train/tube, they are common in London, I can't see what's wrong with them?

Legendairy · 21/10/2023 11:27

What actually irritates people about them? I can't see the harm at all. I mean the ones in cars are pointless but I can't say they have ever made me think anything either way about them.

EvilElsa · 21/10/2023 11:27

Darkmode2 · 21/10/2023 10:56

I'm indifferent to them, hardly even notice them

Really don't understand the irrational hate and annoyance towards them

I find that more bizarre tbh

This.
I can't even recall when I last saw one.

I just find them a combination of smug and indicative of a worrying lack of confidence about just speaking up. I lived in London through both pregnancies and would have cringed myself inside out if I'd worn one. When I wanted a seat I used my words and asked for one.

The car ones certainly not as popular as they used to be.

I thought the pregnant woman one was so people can't use the excuse that they don't want to offend a fat woman so don't offer their seat.

Some people just aren't that confidence and everyone must have their own reasons for it so I guess I wouldn't judge them.

That said, not sure they would really make a difference as I was nearly 8 months pregnant on a very busy train, very obviously pregnant and asked for a seat and was refused by everyone. One 'kind' person offered there seat when they got off in a few stops 🙄 I had pelvic joint dysfunction and was quite unsteady but luckily had a friend with me who helped me till a seat was available.

CurlewKate · 21/10/2023 11:35

They do annoy me a bit- but the thing that stuck with me is hearing a police officer asking that if the baby's not in the car then take out the sticker, because if there's an accident the emergency services are going to put themselves even more at risk looking for a non existent baby.

"I was going to ram the back of this car but I won't, seeing as there's a baby in it" - thought nobody, ever.

Exactly !

They irritate me so much

I have 4 children BTW!

NewPinkJacket · 21/10/2023 11:46

For those asking what's so irritating about them, it's the fact the driver clearly believes they make one single iota of difference to how other road users choose to drive.

It's not so much the signs that are stupid, but the people who have them.

OTM1982 · 21/10/2023 12:00

I get irrationally annoyed by this at least once a week.

Betsyhilton · 21/10/2023 12:02

They seem to be just another way of making some people feel they're speshul.

MeetyouatMidnight · 21/10/2023 12:48

I am talking about the Car signs

I agree about the pregnancy badges being annoying as well though! Although I do see why people wear them, I’m apprehensive to what difference they make considering I once did a 75 minute commute standing while heavily pregnant when no one would give me a seat despite asking.

I think I’m general people are going to be docks and a badge or sign makes zero difference

I wouldn't say rage inducing, but I do think 'what a twat'.

In any accident where an occupant could have been flung from the car they will always search the area for casualties. I’m also surprised that you think a small suction cup would remain nealty on a likely shattered window, but there would be no sign of a car seat, baby things etc left in thr vehicle.

Hesma · 21/10/2023 12:55

My heart broke every time I saw one after my first miscarriage 💔

SinnerBoy · 21/10/2023 13:00

They're a special signifier, to warn you about the driver who has the attitude:

I drive like a twat, but YOU'RE not allowed to!

JaxiiTaxii · 21/10/2023 13:04

It doesn't bother me that much but there is a weird 'value of life' thing going on IMO.

'My baby's life in my car is more valuable than your older kids in their twingo, or that of the Mum of 3 in her nissan.
So take special care around ME and my more valuable child'

All lives, every single one, are precious and we should all drive respectfully with that in mind.

Maybe we should all get 'human on board' stickers...

ShowOfHands · 21/10/2023 13:12

I only clicked on this thread to check somebody had erroneously claimed they're for the emergency services. I'm married to a copper who has paramedic and fire siblings. All three confirm that never, in 3 decades of collective uniformed service in four different regions of the the UK, has any of them ever been taught to look for BOB signs. They do a thorough job at every accident and pay no heed to bits of plastic in cars which serves no purpose but to obscure visibility.

As a non pregnant passenger I quite like them because I don't want to offer my seat to what I think is a pregnant woman only for it to turn out that she is just fat.
