Baby on Board Stickers

Why do they irrationally annoy me? Is it anyone else?

People don't even use them properly. You're only meant to display them when your baby is in the car, so that if you're in an accident, the emergency services will be aware to look for a baby in the wreckage. But most people display them all the time, so they could waste time trying to find a baby thats not there and potentially put themselves in danger.

Sigh. This has been clarified time and time again. EMRs will ALWAYS check the car for babies/other passengers.

I saw one the other day that said "OAP driver, please be patient my reflexes are slower"

Surely by the time you're buying that sign you shouldn't be driving?!

Jesus. Just hand in your licence!!

The fish one is Ichthus and refers to Christianity. Abit different to the other signs mentioned.

No really. Why do you need to advertise your religion on your car?

There's been about a million of these threads from my time on MN and I'm still surprised there are so many people frothing at the mouth over a sign in a car that doesn't affect you. It used to mainly be infertile women but seems even those with kids get the rage over it now. There's a lot of things that annoy me in life and types of people and this isn't one of them. I find it really odd actually.

Infertile woman? How nasty.

To be fair unless they have a baby on board sticker I ran them.

Yes, I prefer “no baby on board, feel free to ram”

What a pile of absolute bollocks.

It's a weird thing to be annoyed about.

I see some value in the parking lot, if you have a choice to park next to a car with high probability of a car seat inside and car with lower probability of a car seat inside, which space would you turn in?

???

Am I missing something. Why would i be more likely to park next to someone with a car seat?

JudgeJ · 23/10/2023 13:07

When I was still teaching the school's Union rep had a bumper sticker 'If you can read this, thank a teacher'. We encourage every reprobate in the school to go up to him and ask 'What does your bumper sticker say?' The good old days. when you were allowed a bit of fun at work!

ComeOutSun · 21/10/2023 23:43

More embarrassed for you. I was around when they were invented. But if it makes you feel better.

I don't know what you mean by 'invented', they were in Germany long before they were in the UK, early '70s.

Zebedee55 · 22/10/2023 07:26

Those "dogs on board" or "cats on board" (annoying enough), seem to have morphed into "championship winning cats/dogs on board".🙄

Who cares? 🤔

In the States I've seen window decoration and bumper stickers announcing the driver to be the parent of a clever child, things like 'My son is an Honor Student at Whatever High School', I never knew the point, did they expect everyone to wave and give them a thumbs up as they drove by?

JudgeJ · 23/10/2023 13:23

KimberleyClark · 22/10/2023 08:25

Yes it’s basically announcing We Are Fertile!

Or it's telling the world 'Guess what bedtime activity we've invented', Guinness Book of Records must be on standby.

If you drive along the parked cars (perpendicular or angled spaces) you see just the rear side of them. If some of them have the sticker and you have a choice from multiple places, you can decide to not park next to someone with high probability of a car seat in.

“Infertile women”

Yes, because those useless, childless ones have nothing better to do than become annoyed about stuff. 🤔 and now “even” the superior fertile ones have cottoned on….

Aren’t you something else @LemonPeonies

LemonPeonies · 23/10/2023 16:39

@feelingalittlehorse Yes actually the threads were women saying things like some comments on this thread such as "announcing you have working ovaries " and my favourite "congratulations you can breed". On enquiring further it transpired these women were in fact infertile. So your point is?

The point is, those comments were tongue in cheek. Your comment was below the belt.

Very interested to hear more regarding these further enquiries.

I think sisterhood has gone right out the window @LemonPeonies

LolaSmiles · 23/10/2023 18:33

It's hardly frothing at the mouth to laugh at one of life's silly little things on a reasonably light hearted thread with other people who equally think it's silly.

When it comes down to it the BOB signs suggest:

  • the person driving the car seems to think that a twee sign is going to make random drivers suddenly super carefully because the baby in the car in front is much more precious than any other driver/passenger (in reality the baby is no more objectively special the occupants of another car who are all teens and adults going to the supermarket)
  • the person driving has read something on social media and thinks that in the event of an accident rescue services aren't going to see a car seat and look for an infant unless they see a little sign in the window (which if the crash is severe enough to throw an infant from their car seat, a little stick on sign is probably long gone)
  • the person driving believes their own driving is not to an adequate standard and is risky therefore others need to be warned to give more space (in which case what are they doing driving their baby around if they think their baby's safety is dependent on other drivers giving more than the usual amount of safe room)
  • the person driving, for some reason, feels the need to tell total strangers they have procreated (and most people won't care because they're not looking at cars thinking "I wonder if the driver of AG22 JGH has a baby, and if they do, are they in the vehicle".

People always find little quirks amusing and annoying.

kitsuneghost · 23/10/2023 20:29

I don't even think it is parents/grannies that buy tĥem
You are going to find out you are pregnant be sitting making a list of clothes, cot, buggies, sterilisers and a whole load of baby stuff then be 'must remember the baby on board sign'.

It is probably given as a knick knack gift possibly from other children along with the best grandpa mug.

LemonPeonies · 24/10/2023 08:49

@NewPinkJacket the comment about having working ovaries was made on this thread if you want to rtft and the breeding comment was on one of the many threads titled "AIBU being so pissed off with Baby on board signs", could have been a year or 2 ago I don't have time to search for it for a link. I remember questioning the pp about it and she didn't have a credible answer to why she felt hatred towards people announcing they could "breed" as she put it. I just think it's weird saying such shitty remarks.

Nope you have still lost me. I am happy parking next to any car.

Presumably in amongst all the cryptic messages, she simply means that with a car seat you're more likely to need to open your doors wide to take out/put in the car seat and therefore more likely to make contact with a neighbouring car.

I've searched through loads of them and I cannot for the life of me see how you think "It used to mainly be infertile women".

It was just the very odd comment, so you appear to be talking rubbish.
