Baby on Board Stickers

Why do they irrationally annoy me? Is it anyone else?

People have forgotten what those baby on board signs are for. They were designed to alert emergency services to look for a baby in the event of a crash. Sometimes infant seats can flip up and hide the baby. They were never to tell people to drive more carefully. Until I knew what they were really for, I thought they were weird too. Now they make some sense. A bit like those stickers you put on your window to let emergency services know there are animals inside the house.

Oh do stop it.

Do you genuinely think emergency services are only going to look for a baby if there's a garish plastic sticker in the window? 🙄 🙄

Jesus wept.

Makes the parent feel better that there is an extra level of alert, I guess? Those stickers are over 30 years old. People have forgotten why they originated. It also tells strangers who might be helping that there is a baby. If it makes the parents feel better, why not?

This was debunked as an urban myth decades ago (and also upthread, and every time someone trots out this fake gotcha on MN in general)

Embarrassed for you.

Oh my.

Ironically people who have baby on board stickers on seems to be amongst the most incompetent drivers.

I've noticed this, especially if it's the dad driving on his own.

ThatshallotBaby · 21/10/2023 22:53

I like the stick people.

That's what I always thought. I read a story once about a baby being thrown from a car in an accident and dying because it hadn't been found in time by the paramedics.

I've just done a bit of googling and that turns out to be an urban legend. The signs were invented in the 80s by an American man who was uncomfortable with impatient drivers tailgating him when he was driving with his 18 month old nephew in the car.

Agree - the emergency services thing isn't true. TBH I have always thought they are the driver's way of asking everyone to just give them a second or two more patience than usual? Like there might be a screaming baby in the back seat and they might be a bit distracted.

Catsmere · 21/10/2023 23:14

Wonkasworld · 21/10/2023 18:43

They are about as useful as the new driver signs. You've either passed your test and are fit to drive, or you haven't and you're not!

Interesting - I didn't know P plates were voluntary in Britain (just looked it up). They're mandatory in Australia. I just came off mine! :)

I'd be inclined to use them rather than a "new driver" sign, had it been a choice.

Why would there be an 'extra level of alert'??

Do you know one single parent who removes the sticker every time the baby's not in the car?? No I didn't think so.

Also, how insulting to the professional men and women in the emergency services to think they'll only check the car and surrounding areas if a piece of plastic tells them to.

More embarrassed for you. I was around when they were invented. But if it makes you feel better.

ComeOutSun · 21/10/2023 23:44

I once saw a sign in a car: Adults on Board. We Want to Live too. I thought it was brilliant.

You’re wrong though. They were never anything to do with the emergency services.

Emergency services are not usually the first one the scene. If you're not trained, you're not necessarily going to think of it.

Wrong or not, and I accept I probably am as I'm not invested enough to research it, why get worked up because someone has a sign? It doesn't affect your life. Charmed life they must be having if they can afford that kind of emotional energy for something so trivial.

No. They really absolutely are not. I cannot believe this bullshit is still around!

What does this actual piffle mean!! I want to laugh! Do you honestly believe that people bustling about their business, trying to get to work, for me on the M60 into the centre of Manchester, in stop start traffic for 9 or 10 miles a day, will be looking in the back of every fucking car to see a small triangular plastic sign which denotes the breedability of the driver? STOP!!! 😂

JillyBoel22 · 21/10/2023 23:59

The worst I have seen is from a neighbour with a 'powered by bitch dust' in Disney font which infuriates me to no end!

You're not 'invested' enough to check that what you're typing isn't bullshit?

All dead here Dave. Call it in. No, wait, hang the fuck on, there is a £2.99 Halfords stick on sign in the back of this totally obliterated windscreen in the back of this totalled fiesta which says Daddys Prinny is on Board. Get the chopper in Dave lad, we're here all night.

If it makes the parents feel better, does it matter?

I stuck one on my car with my first just because I was so chuffed to have a baby, so grabbed one in the store when it was just there. Didn't have one for any of the others. For me it was just a decoration.

yogasaurus · 22/10/2023 00:02

And the force of the crash has blown the car seat and baby out so far down the road we didn’t even see them, but the little plastic sign survived intact…

Custard Creams removed overnight 😂

Not invested enough to care about verifying whether the info we were given at antenatal classes years ago is correct since it's so inconsequential, no.

I'll let you get back to your easy life where you have the energy to care what other people stick on their windows.

yogasaurus · 22/10/2023 00:03

And there it is. The real reason people have them. PFB’s.
