Friend lying about tv appearance.

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 22:54

A friend of mine has recently told me (& put on Facebook) that they were going to be a contestant on a popular quiz show
However when I checked online to see if I could be part of the audience the website said the show had been recorded in March and will be on tv in 2024.
WIBU to call this friend out on their lie or is it possible they’re telling the truth & audience website is incorrect.

Leave her alone. If she is fibbing then who is she hurting?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 21/10/2023 01:22

But this is a biggie.

I worked with a woman many years ago who claimed she’s been diagnosed with cancer and asked us all to donate to a fundraiser. It was all bullshit.

THAT was a biggie. This is just a bit of sad attention seeking - if she even is lying.

Oyen · 21/10/2023 01:23

NahNahKissHimGoodbye · 20/10/2023 23:13

People lie for a reason. It would make me wonder what she was doing on that day when she was supposed to be on the show?

Like an alibi?

Maybe she killed someone.

Oyen · 21/10/2023 01:26

Some people are just full of shit.

I knew a woman who said she had tickets to see Eva Cassidy. Eva Cassidy had been dead ten years at that point.

God the pitch forks are out in force tonight. Hope you're all proud of yourselves you nasty bullies.

The friend clearly told OP that she was recording this week which it is not possible that she was. If my friend told me a lie like that I'd be pretty weirded out/intrigued. Honestly sometimes the weird need to leap on a bandwagon of viciousness is so absolutely frightening.

I’ve never read so much overdramatic nonsense. The OP hasn’t been tarred and feathered, for heaven’s sake. You really need to get a grip.

Serrina · 21/10/2023 01:34

Why do you care?

Canonlythinkofthisone · 21/10/2023 01:35

I'm confused. She said she'd filmed it and you tried to book tickets to be in the audience? For a past event?

YireosDodeAver · 21/10/2023 01:49

Your "friend" has made a mistake about when the episode she is in will be broadcast. Your assumption is that she is maliciously lying. You aren't actually her friend. Hopefully she has other friends so isn't going to mind losing you.

I haven't attempted to get into WWTBAM for years but I went through a phase of trying. Unless they have changed the system it is impossible to get tickets to see a particular person being a contestant. Step one to becoming a contestant is to get tickets to be in the audience - that happens by dialling a premium phone number for a random chance of winning where the vast majority of phonecalls fail, but if you are successful getting tickets to be in the audience you then have a tiny chance of being a contestant as each show starts with a Fastest Finger First question and one random audience member gets to be the contestant.

She probably isn't lying. There's no point lying about easily verifiable facts.

How the fuck is wanting to watch your friend do something exciting like be on a TV quiz show being a "Busybody"?

OP was excited for her friend, and did a totally normally thing only to find inconsistencies that have made her pause. Which is sensible. Someone lying about something that can only really be self-aggrandising should be a big red flag for a friendship. Added to previous lies it's making OP reevaluate her friend's character and their relationship. What is unreasonable about that?

FarEast · 21/10/2023 02:26

But this is a biggie.

Really?

mjf981 · 21/10/2023 03:11

Just ask when it will be aired, make reminder on your phone, and tune in on the night. Then you'll know.
In the meantime - give it no further thought and assume she is telling the truth. All the hand wringing, investigating and speculating is poor form and does not reflect well on you.

WandaWonder · 21/10/2023 03:34

OK it's either true or they lied, and???

ShippingForecastMeditator · 21/10/2023 03:37

OP you very obviously have an issue with this person if you’ve gone to all this effort to catch them out. You went on a website to get audience tickets for a show you’d been told had already been recorded? Yeah right.

I’m intrigued to know what she’s really done to piss you off, although I’m fairly sure it’s something petty like she had a pony when she was growing up and you didn’t. Maybe this should be a wake up call to find healthier ways to spend your time?

Chickenkeev · 21/10/2023 03:42

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 23:05

Friend said they were recording in media city last week. Website stated recording was in March & no further recordings.

If you think they're a compulsive liar, surely there would be easier things to trip them up on?

FabFitFifties · 21/10/2023 04:01

If she has redeeming qualities, as a friend, and her lies don't really affect you, I'd rise above it, and find some humour in waiting to hear her reason for it not airing. She likely has self esteem issues, so I'd try to be kind.

RocketIceLollie · 21/10/2023 04:08

Let it go. If you find her irritating yourself then just cut her out of your life instead.

Mrsmulhern · 21/10/2023 04:23

Honestly just let it go. Maybe if you must, tell her you wanted to be in the audience and it says online it was recorded in March and can she point you in the right direction?

IMO, it seems you knew she was fibbing and you’ve just confirmed it by looking when it was aired. What difference would it make if you were in the audience or not?

Id just nod and smile, there’s no point in making her feel bad.

WiddlinDiddlin · 21/10/2023 04:32

So... when it gets to the air date and she's not on, you'll know... or, eat your words.

If it gets close and she starts coming up with 'ah no my episode got pulled'... then she may be lying.

That said, a friend was on Antiques Roadshow the other week and initially got the air date wrong, so we all sat down to watch and she wasn't on... and then it became apparent they'd done two dates in that location and she was on the second one a couple of weeks later. So stuff does happen.

givemeasunnyday · 21/10/2023 04:39

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 22:57

Not sure really. Maybe find out why they’ve said this if not true. I’ve caught them lying in the past but never had it out with them. But this is a biggie.

Oh do grow up!! It's not a "biggie" and why do you have to call them out on it? Maybe they have lied, maybe they haven't - what does it matter?? It's not harming you, or anyone else.

DreamTheMoors · 21/10/2023 05:03

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 22:59

Website stated recorded was in March.

Shows are often recorded months in advance, except for shows like GMB and the evening news and other daily programs.

It’s not a big deal and I’m sure your friend isn’t deliberately lying to you.

You wanted to be in the audience - or - you wanted to catch her in a lie?
I suspect it’s the latter.

It’s not really a biggie though is it? No one is going to die or get hurt…

Dita73 · 21/10/2023 05:45

If she’s lying you don’t have to call her out as she won’t be on tv anytime soon and will have to explain why. Not sure why you’re so bothered about it

Riverlee · 21/10/2023 05:45

Maybe they did more recordings this week.

i don’t th8nk it’s anything to worry about. She’ll be caught out be eventually when she doesn’t appear on tv.

Cherryana · 21/10/2023 05:50

For a quiz I was on , I had my audition in September and was actually on the show in February the following year. TV is something that moves really quickly and very slowly at times.
