Friend lying about tv appearance.

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 22:54

A friend of mine has recently told me (& put on Facebook) that they were going to be a contestant on a popular quiz show
However when I checked online to see if I could be part of the audience the website said the show had been recorded in March and will be on tv in 2024.
WIBU to call this friend out on their lie or is it possible they’re telling the truth & audience website is incorrect.

OP posts:
AbbeyGailsParty · 21/10/2023 09:10

I think you’ve misunderstood.
Filming is way before the programme is shown on TV, easily a year before.
You sound jealous and a bit vindictive. I hope your friend had a great time on the programme.

( if you want to be in an audience for a programme sign up to their newsletter so you get advance warning)

Sometimeswinning · 21/10/2023 09:11

Honestly op I would get tired of someone making up random lies and wanting to have pointless conversations about it. I would not want to be pulled into this and would be taking a big step away from the person.

Turns out people would quite happily ignore it and let it happen to them according to the majority on here! I personally, like the op wouldn’t want it in my life.

Not sure really. Maybe find out why they’ve said this if not true. I’ve caught them lying in the past but never had it out with them. But this is a biggie.

It's not a "biggie", even if it were a lie. It'd be a weird stupid lie but there is no reason to suppose it's an untruth.

The only weird thing about this whole situation is your behaviour.

"This is a biggie"??? Seriously????

(Clue: it isn't).

Friend of mine was on 'Tipping Point'- it was recorded months and months before it aired but she was not allowed to tell anyone the result until after it had been on TV. She stuck to it religiously as well and wouldn't say how she did until afterwards. I really don't get why you are so invested in it though!

A family member of mine was on a similar show. Had to sign an NDA. First we all knew about it was when she told us it was being aired (a year after filming). She won. It was great!

Blinky21 · 21/10/2023 09:20

Everyone saying it's not a biggie must have weird friends. If one of my friends was messaging me saying they were on a TV show but weren't, I'd be seriously worried about them, it's a pretty bizarre thing to do, unless they are a known practical joker

ClaireEclair · 21/10/2023 09:21

Three of my friends have been contestants on different quiz shows. They are filmed months in advance. I remember it took ages for the shows to air. One was millionaire and he didn’t get past the first round 😆

Your "friend" has made a mistake about when the episode she is in will be broadcast. Your assumption is that she is maliciously lying. You aren't actually her friend. Hopefully she has other friends so isn't going to mind losing you.

I haven't attempted to get into WWTBAM for years but I went through a phase of trying. Unless they have changed the system it is impossible to get tickets to see a particular person being a contestant. Step one to becoming a contestant is to get tickets to be in the audience - that happens by dialling a premium phone number for a random chance of winning where the vast majority of phonecalls fail, but if you are successful getting tickets to be in the audience you then have a tiny chance of being a contestant as each show starts with a Fastest Finger First question and one random audience member gets to be the contestant.

She probably isn't lying. There's no point lying about easily verifiable facts.

I don't think it's as random as that. They usually only have a few people who compete in the Fastest Finger First question, not least because they have to make sure that they've got someone sitting with your Phone-A-Friends to make sure they don't google the answer.

Passepartoute · 21/10/2023 09:24

whowhy · 21/10/2023 08:33

This makes no sense. If she told you she recorded the show last week and that she got to 12 questions, then why were you trying to buy tickets?

Sounds like you're both in fantasyland and also quite odd.

I think OP is saying that friend told her she was going to record it this week, then later she told OP that she'd done it and got to 12 questions.

However, friend does seem to be lying as she would have been subject to a confidentiality agreement if she really had been on.

BertaBobAndMeToo · 21/10/2023 09:25

You don’t need to do anything - if your friend says they are appearing on telly and they do appear on telly, all good.

if your friend has made up that they are on telly and they don’t appear on telly, you and anyone else gripped on social media will know.

either way, is this friendship bringing you joy? If not, move on, as it doesn’t sound like you like them.

HurdyGurdy19 · 21/10/2023 09:30

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 23:10

I think they are a compulsive liar. I’ve always tried to be kind & help them out but it’s going too far now.

Invite them round to your house on the day the programme is airing, where you can get a takeaway, and watch their success together.

Either you will be able to share in, and celebrate, their success, or you can be Smuggy McSmugface, having done your detective work and prove that you knew they were lying.

BananaSpanner · 21/10/2023 09:30

I’d think any friend of mine who made up that they had got up to 12 questions on Millionaire was crackers so I understand OPs concern. But then I’d be asking loads of questions out of sheer nosiness so wouldn’t be this unclear about whether it could be true or not.

MrsMurphyIWish · 21/10/2023 09:32

I think a thread needs to be started about people on quiz shows and their prizes - I’m enjoying the posts in people who they know IRL who has been on one.

DD and I love Lingo but I’m an English teacher so if I did rubbish I couldn’t show my face again!

UneFoisAuChalet · 21/10/2023 09:34

Our friend filmed the chase before Covid and it was about a year before his episode aired. We knew it had been filmed but no one knew when it would be aired, including our friend. He didn’t tell us the outcome.

Daphnis156 · 21/10/2023 09:35

There is a real life to lead, you know...

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 23:02

To reiterate. Friend told me last weekend they were going to be on who wants to be a millionaire as a contestant this week. I wanted to be in the audience so looked on Lost in tv who arrange tickets. The website said recording was in March not this week.
Friend messaged yesterday & said they had got to 12 questions.

Well you'll find out this week then, won't you?!

TuesdayWonder · 21/10/2023 09:38

I know someone who was on a TV show, they had to sign an NDA and not mention the appearance or how they had done. It was filmed over a year before actually airing on TV so your friends story is likely true. Also lots of companies don't update websites etc so I wouldn't call someone out on the basis of looking at one website

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 21/10/2023 09:38

KatKoot · 20/10/2023 23:05

Friend said they were recording in media city last week. Website stated recording was in March & no further recordings.

Your drip feed and confusing posts are not helping

A 'biggie'? About a TV quiz show? You need to get out more.

applesandmares · 21/10/2023 09:46

I'm not understanding why a lie about being a contestant on a quiz show is 'a biggie' in the context of a compulsive liar who presumably lies about lots of things all the time.

Anyway, if I were you and wanted the confrontation, I'd ask them when it will air and wait it out until it never does.

In reality though, I think it's time you either accept that this person is a compulsive liar, accept them regardless and roll your eyes from time to time OR remove them from your life.

BalletBob · 21/10/2023 09:46

You don't sound like a very nice friend tbh.

There are lots of possible explanations for this, and nobody here can tell you whether your friend is telling the truth or not. But that doesn't really matter.

You say that your friend has a history of lying. If they are telling these kind of lies (i.e. lies that make them sound more interesting by inventing exciting stories) then there's a reason for that. A good friend would be thinking about why that is, and the kind of deep unhappiness and insecurity that drives the behavior. But you just want to try and catch her out. You're no friend.

Luxell934 · 21/10/2023 09:48

“I’m going to be on WWTBAM!”

”Oh wow, can’t wait to watch and see how you did”

I’d literally give it no further thought than that.

I wouldn’t give a shit enough to play investigator 🤣🤣 Even if she was lying, for whatever reason, it’s not exactly affecting your life is it?

Text her - congratulations on being on WWTBAM and getting to 12 questions - when will it air and how much did you win? what a shame that I didn’t get to see it recorded

she replies screen shot both your question and the reply.

she might be telling the truth might not - either way once you have your reply - step back from the friendship

lots of people fake reality - or embellish themselves usually due to low self esteem

Wouldyouguess · 21/10/2023 09:50

What a non event. Many of these are filmed months and months in advance and I would not suspect they update the website all the time anyways. I knew someone who was on the show and she told us she was on it and it wasn't until months and months later.

Also, if she told you it was filmed, why did you want to apply to be an audience for something that had already happened?

LynetteScavo · 21/10/2023 09:55

Eh? It's going to be a pretty obvious lie if they're not actually on the show. Or maybe it's a misunderstanding about the recording and showing dates?
