I am a fanfiction writer for a very small vaguely embarrassing community. Every few years, someone posts a new story. I get so excited, even if the quality of writing is absolutely shite.

I am very curious as to this one. Which show. Tell tell!!

Never heard of ao3 before.

I used to love reading and writing fanfic for the tribe (a culty teen show that finished about 20 years ago now!). I still occasionally read but I've read most of them multiple times now. Will have to see if ao3 have any!!

I just realised ao3 is archive of its own..I have heard of it lol just never called it that!! Dam thought they'd be some fresh reading for me

Bizjustgotreal · 23/11/2023 19:10

FanFiction has been a daily habit of mine for 20 years. There are some incredible fics.

I really struggle to think of scenarios, which makes me quite sad. I'd love to be able to create stories like the ones I admire.

There are some incredible writers who have epic length work up to be read for free. I think it's wonderful.

Hawdyerwheesht · 23/11/2023 19:46

@TheGirlWithTheArabStrap yeah sure to the DM. If it's popular I've likely already read it (especially if it's M rated 🙃). I've just fleshed out my own plot line for an Ao3 story.

KaylaDetmer · 23/11/2023 19:48

I leave it a few weeks and go back to enjoy the new stuff. Some of it is of amazing quality.

I’m a reader and a writer- I have some niche ones, like fanfic based on Janet Evanovich, and some more main stream.

a favourite fiction series is A year like none other, a summer like none other and a family like none other. Amazingly written HP fanfic by AspeninTheSunlight.

Ooh can't believe I've never thought to look up any Stephanie Plum!

I love it when you find a writer whose voice you really like and then lose a week reading everything they've ever written and then all of their Ao3 bookmarks to find new writers who you're going to like as well 😆

Luckylady88 · 23/11/2023 20:49

I used to love the Dracula/Agatha fan fiction after getting obsessed with the Dracula bbc series! Archive of our own and Tumblr. Haven’t looked in a while

StrawberryWater · 23/11/2023 21:20

Been reading fanfic for decades. Mostly X-Files stuff. Occasionally write it to.

MooseBreath · 23/11/2023 21:41

@Bells3032 A '90s children's show called Mystic Knights. Essentially medieval Irish Power Rangers. Honestly, the fanfiction is better than the show was.

JuliaGoolias · 23/11/2023 18:06

I haven't read fan fiction for about 20 years, please please recommend a Strike one for me

I'm not sure I can think of any in particular.. I generally just go all the way through Archive Of Our Own and see what I can find.. though I seem to find myself zero-ing in on ones with tags such as Angst, Pining or Smut 😁

I prefer short ones... think there is a series called 'First Kisses' by LulaIsAKitten which I really liked.

ginnybag · 23/11/2023 22:34

Yep.

I've been writing in a rather niche fandom for about 20 years, and reading across a variety since my teens.

Panda89 · 23/11/2023 23:39

I love Ao3 - Dramione is my ship.
My husband thinks it’s hilarious but genuinely I read better stories on ao3 than from published authors. Manacled is a work of art, another one I loved is ‘The Fallout’

TheFireflies · 24/11/2023 00:18

Honestly some fanfic has me in tears. I still remember reading a Hunger Games one which ended with Katniss and Peeta, afflicted by the ills of old age, finally eating the berries that would have ended their life in the arena. Gosh did I cry.

Yes there’s a lot of crud, but there’s a lot of diamonds.

MissdeeVine · 24/11/2023 03:26

Here's the StrikeFans link to some fics to get you started: strikefans.com/strike-fanfiction/

There's one of mine on there 😊 but I particularly recommend the ones by LulaIsAKitten, meansovermotive, 105NorthTower and Kate88 which are a bit less angsty than mine 😁 and so well-written.

Yellowdaysaregood · 24/11/2023 04:01

I think as someone who is ND and very into reading I've missed something 😂, these are surely my people, I want to both read and write this stuff. It's like reading a foreign language though, there's obviously stuff that's ' in' , I need to investigate.

X-files is what got me into fanfiction many years ago. I used to haunt the TER/MA archive - now on AO3, along with many of the other old archives.

polkettle · 24/11/2023 06:55

I read and write fic. It's not something I'm ashamed of or a secret to anyone, but neither do I advertise my fic outside the very very niche fantom it's for because it just wouldn't make sense to anyone whose headspace was not already filled with those characters!
I also write for a living and I can say that fic is SO much more satisfying because -instant publication! instant endorphin rush of people reading and saying nice things! you don't have to 'kill your darlings'!
No economic value to it but that's true of conventional publishing too 😁

MaudGone · 24/11/2023 07:34

@polkettle , do you mind me asking how you manage to make a living from writing?

polkettle · 24/11/2023 08:02

"Living" is a loose term @MaudGone ...
I am a conventionally published author. My fic is for a very different audience.

The best way to start is to head over to Archive of Our Own (aka AO3), search for a fandom you’re interested in (tv show/ films/ books) and have a look through what comes up! Are there any TV shows or films you’re particularly into?

Yellowdaysaregood · 24/11/2023 14:41

Thanks EllieQ, I will be doing that today!

I ended up having a very late night last night reading your fan fic @MissdeeVine . Absolutely superb, a brilliant read! Just the kind of angst I like! And made even better by the fact that my favourite film is Rear Window! 😀

MissdeeVine · 26/11/2023 01:49

@Figment1982 😊😊😊

Thank you so much! I never mean to write angst but it just comes out anyway, even if it always has to be a happy ending.

And Rear Window is a favourite film of mine too. ❤️
