Sister on holiday with Covid

Spoke to sister this morning. She and her young child have tested positive for Covid after having a cough for a couple days. They are on a cruise due to disembark tomorrow.
I've told her she should tell the medical team onboard and isolate in cabin. She says I'm being ridiculous, that it's the last day so she will stay onboard on the pool deck in the fresh air. She lap says there's loads of people coughing.

I'm angry at her - she's got a flight back tomorrow - she says she will wear a mask but will enjoy the last day of the holiday.
She only tested as she had an lft in her case which I told her to pack.

Aibu for being annoyed at her?

YANBU

She can't leave the ship, but she should not be leaving her cabin (if she were in UK then it's stay home for 5 days unless absolutely essential)

And of course the ship's medical team need to know about a communicable disease on board, whether it's covid, D&V, impetigo, chicken pox or whatever.
Honestly, I wonder sometimes if covid is doing something to people's cognitive function, as basic common sense seems to have vanished

It's not anymore....it changed a couple of years ago. Saying that, I would wear a mask and stay away from people if possible especially as lots of vulnerable oldies on a cruise.

AussieManque · 14/10/2023 15:43

@Panaa it 100% is shortsighted. We/society/taxpayers are going to pay for it down the line with more illness, disability, even longer NHS waiting lists, and a generation of children whose health will have been destroyed by constant infection. Long COVID already is estimated to cost one fifth of the UK GDP.

The sad thing is we know how to limit the spread. But the NHS persists in focusing on hand washing for an airborne disease.

In the meantime, anyone visiting a hospital should arm themselves with a tightly fitting N95 mask for their own safety. Keep some in stock in case you need an A&E visit.

piesforever · 14/10/2023 15:43

As someone who worked in ITU definitely not a mild cold!!! Who honestly believes that?

And we're already paying for the fact that treatments/care etc was delayed during the pandemic.
Delayed cancer diagnoses are expected to have a knock on effect lasting years and years.

Preventing covid cannot be prioritised if it means that other things are not prevented or are delayed etc.

You are the one being shortsighted because you are hyper focused on covid only. You don't seem to understand that preventing covid transmission had a drastic negative effect on healthcare in other ways.

Keep your nose out. You are being completely ridiculous like those idiots who still wear masks in the open air . #nuts

And they are affecting you how?

You are not being unreasonable. Airlines do not allow you to travel until you have a negative Covid test. She should inform cruise, insurance and airline. There will be vulnerable people on the flight. It’s selfish to go ahead and fly. I’m taken aback by how many people wouldn’t adhere to this.

When did you last fly? As far as I'm aware in most cases you haven't needed a negative test to fly since some time in 2021 - if then even . We first travelled post-pandemic September 2021 and didn't need one then, and haven't subsequently.

GCSister · 14/10/2023 16:41

You are not being unreasonable. Airlines do not allow you to travel until you have a negative Covid test.

In the last 6 months I've flown with 9 different airlines. Not one has asked for a negative Covid test and not one country has asked for one either.

Topseyt123 · 14/10/2023 16:43

@jenny38

Airlines haven't required testing of any sort for around 2 years now. I have flown about half a dozen times during that period.

jenny38 · 14/10/2023 16:55

Just to clarify- again- in general you do not need a negative covid test to fly. However IF you have have had covid on holiday, the airline will not let you on the plane with it. You need to be testing negative. Look it up if you don't believe me.
Obviously it's a moral issue, as airline won't know. Coming to conclusion that I am one of the few people who would actually follow this advice. And yes, I have flown recently, usually 2 or 3 times a year.

Topseyt123 · 14/10/2023 16:59

If no tests are required then nobody will know they have covid. I wouldn't even test and nobody would know, myself included. The End.

Yes, I think you may well be one of the very few who would follow this rule and sacrifice your holiday for it.

I've travelled with minor colds many times in the past.

IdealisticCynic · 14/10/2023 17:02

I’m with you OP. People who don’t test and isolate are selfish pricks. I don’t care about the fact that it’s not the law anymore, I think that is what one should do as a member of society.

Rising covid means that those at higher risk (often those with disabilities or going through cancer treatment etc) are forced to stay in just in case because others are wantonly spreading it. Ultimately people who don’t test and isolate simply care about themselves more than they care about others, including those who have been dealt a bad hand by life. Surely that is the very definition of being a selfish prick?

Jedsnewstar · 14/10/2023 17:03

Protect from the sniffles. Come on OP you are being ridiculous now.

Oh shut up. Not everyone can afford to stay at home. You bloody well pay people's wages then if you want them to take time off work in a cost of living crisus.

IdealisticCynic · 14/10/2023 17:05

And don’t get me started on the “it’s just a mild cold now” idiocy. FFS, that is not how these things work.

43ontherocksporfavor · 14/10/2023 17:07

We’ve been told at my school that we don’t need to test, or stay home with Covid unless we feel too unwell to work. It’s madness is t it? We really should have acces to free tests.

Except it is.
No matter how much people want to deny it.

For the vast majority it will affect them as much as a mild cold. There are always outliers though just as there is with any virus, flu, chicken pox etc. Mild for the majority, worse for others, and then some people can be extremely unlucky and it can lead to many complications.

Springingintosummer · 14/10/2023 17:08

She can do what she likes, nd those that don’t have the experience of long covid or loss of loved ones will continue spreading by socialising on cruises etc and on planes.

you, however, have absolutely the right to refuse to pick her up from the airport.

I hope your other sister does not need time off work with covid,

A selfish prick going out to work paying a fortune in tax so those people can have their health treatment. Yeah, fucking awful. Majority of income goes on taxes to fund that.

Utter, fucking stupidity. With a state dependency now in the majority and the highest on record - the country can’t afford tax payers to stay home. Equally, many can’t afford to because of 0 hours contracts.

If you expect people to.stay at home and lose money and potentially their jobs because Many employers expect their work force regardless of wether they have Covid Or not for some hypothetical stranger than your the selfish prick
Let me guess you have a job that allows you to.work.from home🤔

what do YOU test for, how often, and what do YOU isolate for exactly?

Because you would not be such a selfish prick who ONLY test for Covid but ignore every other bug and disease that can have terrible consequences on others surely?

It is like a cold and fairly mild in a lot of cases. Severe in some others and it is a bit random there. But for most it is mild.

That is exactly how these things work, whether you like it or not. Go and explode about that if you want to!

People didn’t give a shit about those of us who had to go through lockdown and had other stuff going on apart from covid. So now is the time for us to be ‘selfish pricks’. It’s ridiculous to constantly treat covid as a priority above everything else.

Gingerbee · 14/10/2023 18:40

Sadly, my neighbour who had breast cancer caught covid at hospital whilst on immunosuppressive medications.
If the cancer unit had still been testing nd using mitigations she may still be alive today
