MIL made me feel like a bad mum

I’m a first time mum to a 5 month old DS. My MIL get on most of the time but she whenever we visit she ALWAYS has something to say about my parenting.

My DS is my entire world and I’m trying to be the best mum I can. Last week I brought DS to MIL house and she changed his nappy and said ‘those jeans are too tight on him I’m not putting them back on him!!’ And proceeded to talk about how people try and get too much wear out of baby clothes

firstly, my baby is average sized and the jeans were 3-6 months and fitted him fine. They were loose on his waist and legs and he was comfortable and they were fleeced lined.

secondly, I don’t like putting joggers or leggings on my DS, I think they’re cheap looking and so he wears cargos, Jeans, chinos etc and I take pride in what he wears.

the whole afternoon she kept going on about his jeans and about how awful it was to put him in jeans and how he was more settled when they were off….he wasn’t; his legs were freezing

I feel like she scrutinises everything I put on him to the point where I don’t want to go to her house anymore!

You need to stand up to your MIL

The wean needs to stand up to OP. 😀

ElleCapitaine · 11/10/2023 21:22

Jeans and chinos? Is your baby a management consultant?

Sparrow7 · 11/10/2023 21:24

It sounds like you wanted a doll, not a baby.

DappledThings · 11/10/2023 21:25

People always lose their minds on here about baby jeans. Mine had some. They aren't actual jeans, just stretchy trousers that are a bit denim coloured. I've seen plenty of baby "jeans", I've never seen anything like actual adult ones in miniature which people seem to be imagining.

I found babygros an absolute pain and almost exclusively used bodysuits and dungarees. If I had another baby now I'm not sure I'd buy a single one. All those pain in the arse poppers that never do up right the first time.

HarperMae · 11/10/2023 21:27

@DappledThings I think people have lost their minds more so at the deleted comment from OP about how babies that wear leggings are chavs.

I didn't see that. But there are loads of comments saying "jeans are so uncomfortable for a baby" with varying degrees of faux, or possibly real horror.

They really aren't wearing actual jeans. They all have nice stretchy waistbands and are just soft trousers.

icallshade · 11/10/2023 21:30

I wouldnt allow my MIL to undermine my parenting.

However, commenting that clothing that you don't like looks cheap and tacky doesn't exactly paint you in the best light either, especially as the clothing you've suggested you'd never dress your baby in is PRACTICAL. If you want to play dress ups, get a doll. Who cares how your baby looks, as long as they are healthy and well cared for. How they look in clothes shouldn't be on the list of things to be taking pride in.

Foot to chest zip. No poppers. I think I read that on here. Thanks to whoever posted it!

My baby boy is always in leggings and a top, he's comfortable and it doesn't look cheap. Mainly stuff from Next, does that make me a chav who doesn't take pride in what he wears? * *

Sorchamarie · 11/10/2023 21:37

Nothing like a made up post taking about chavs to get everyone riled up on Mumsnet!

Strokethefurrywall · 11/10/2023 21:38

Mine had jeans too. And tiny little Ralph Lauren polo shirts. I think the difference here is that most people posting here are not as desperately into appearances (or trolling) as the OP.
I dressed my babies in whatever came out of the drawer first.

But then my babies were cute as fuck and didn't need curated outfits to make them cuter 😉

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Littlepetites · 11/10/2023 20:41

Oh I’d never ever put him in trainers. He’s usually in either jeans, cargos, dungarees etc with a little polo collared top/jumper now we’re coming into the winter. Believe me he does not look like a chav.

He’s a baby, not a dress up doll. We all prefer comfort, babies especially.

cherrypeachparfait · 11/10/2023 21:42

She’s a bit unwise isn’t she to keep going on like that. She’ll only drive her DIL away. OP I sympathise!

Is your second sentence supposed to impress?

It doesn’t. 🙄

Strokethefurrywall · 11/10/2023 21:43

Uh yes it was a joke, hence the winking emoticon...

Wow, what a disgusting attitude. YABVU.

TEAM MIL.

You care only about yourself, she cares about your baby. Your poor child.

He is a little baby. Think about that. A baby.

This.

Fionaville · 11/10/2023 21:45

I kind of agree with your MIL. They are only babies for a little bit. I always think they look so much better and are much more comfortable in soft clothes and all in ones. I find it a bit cringe when mums dress baby boys like little men all the time and even worse when their little shirts are constantly riding up their backs.

JennyForeigner · 11/10/2023 21:47

Still giggling at 'is your baby a Management Consultant?'

I want to watch that public information film.

Topi226 · 11/10/2023 21:48

Oh wow. Leggings do not look cheap! My little one looks lovely in his leggings and tops. I've always picked clothes based on comfort. You just cant say jeans are as comfy as soft material pants.
I always cringe when I see small babies in denim.

widowtwankywashroom · 11/10/2023 21:49

Babies look bloody awful in jeans

ZoeCM · 11/10/2023 21:51

This cannot be for real. He's a human being, not a doll! Your priority should be his comfort.

Teenagehorrorbag · 11/10/2023 21:52

I had an interfering MIL and it used to drive me bonkers. She always complained that the DCs feet were cold (when they insisted on taking off their socks) and said "well I loved my DC and wouldn't want them to die of pneumonia...."! Grr!

So YANBU in that you are the parent and it's not her business. But I also agree with PPs that young babies should be in soft flexible outfits. Mine lived in babygrows until at least a year old - with dresses or dungarees on top for special occasions. Jeans and chinos may look trendy but they aren't ideal.
