MIL made me feel like a bad mum

I’m a first time mum to a 5 month old DS. My MIL get on most of the time but she whenever we visit she ALWAYS has something to say about my parenting.

My DS is my entire world and I’m trying to be the best mum I can. Last week I brought DS to MIL house and she changed his nappy and said ‘those jeans are too tight on him I’m not putting them back on him!!’ And proceeded to talk about how people try and get too much wear out of baby clothes

firstly, my baby is average sized and the jeans were 3-6 months and fitted him fine. They were loose on his waist and legs and he was comfortable and they were fleeced lined.

secondly, I don’t like putting joggers or leggings on my DS, I think they’re cheap looking and so he wears cargos, Jeans, chinos etc and I take pride in what he wears.

the whole afternoon she kept going on about his jeans and about how awful it was to put him in jeans and how he was more settled when they were off….he wasn’t; his legs were freezing

I feel like she scrutinises everything I put on him to the point where I don’t want to go to her house anymore!

Sorry OP but I agree with your mother in law, jeans on young babies are just awful. I really wouldn't worry about how your baby is dressed as long as they are clean and comfortable, that should be the priority.

I'm sorry the comment upset you so much though.

StrawberryLemonade2 · 11/10/2023 20:48

You put whatever you want on your baby. There are definitely soft jean type trousers for babies. It isn't up to your MIL, or anyone else, what you put on your baby.

YABU for calling saying joggers and leggings look cheap.

hi there... @Littlepetites I'm wearing leggings... tbh that's all I wear. except when I wear joggers. and sadly I am more than 5 months old.

maybe if my parents had dressed me in chinos and jeans, I would have standards... and not be lying here covered in cookie crumbs... wondering where my life went...

my flexibility is great though...

Crying 😂 😂

Outfits on babies are a waste of time until they can sit up independently imo. Lying down in jeans or indeed anything with a tight waistband or pockets is uncomfortable. Would you wear jeans to bed?

WandaWonder · 11/10/2023 20:49

Babies do not need actual clothing like what adults wear it is not practical on them no matter what marketing or influences tell people

Leggings aren't chavvy Confused

TiredMamOfTwo · 11/10/2023 20:50

YABU. Jeans on babies are not comfy. They are babies not fashion accessories.

ZaraBlue · 11/10/2023 20:50

You can get some really high quality and gorgeous looking joggers or leggings for babies. Mori, Mini Rodini etc. I always feel bad for babies in restrictive clothing eg jeans it just doesn't look right

RedRobyn2021 · 11/10/2023 20:51

Littlepetites · 11/10/2023 20:41

Oh I’d never ever put him in trainers. He’s usually in either jeans, cargos, dungarees etc with a little polo collared top/jumper now we’re coming into the winter. Believe me he does not look like a chav.

Oh my goodness this is a snobby comment

A baby chav?

Is this a thing?

What do you wear day-to-day?

Over egged this one. 2/10

I dunno I admire the imagination me. I was reading one that went poof earlier and I could never come up with stuff like that.

bakewellbride · 11/10/2023 20:53

My 5 year old wears joggers and hates jeans so has literally never worn them once in his life. The horror!

ColleenDonaghy · 11/10/2023 20:53

Nothing gets MN riled up like someone thinking they're posh when they're not actually posh. Gotta put those povs in their place...

Curious, what IS the standard you’re going for here?

MIL could have been more tactful but she’s right about jeans on 5mo baby.

Holidaylover68 · 11/10/2023 20:58

OP your MIL needs to chill as do other people on here saying putting your baby in fleecy jeans is negatively affecting his development. Load of rubbish! You put him in what you like. What is wrong with people?

Very good work if so. The collared shirt might have been just a smidge too far.

MangshorJhol · 11/10/2023 21:03

Since a 5 month old sleeps as much as they are awake, do you change into babygros every time they sleep? Because do you sleep in collared tops and jeans? It is not comfortable. Or sensible.

Children need clothes that are appropriate for their development. Not clothes that make them look like mini adults. I am unlikely to refine my gross motor skills further but a baby is learning these vital skills and needs to wear clothes where they can do so. Leggings and joggers are perfect for this. As are round necked tops.

Prinnny · 11/10/2023 21:03

I think babies look ridiculous in jeans and other restrictive clothes, much more chavvy looking than ‘cheap’ leggings but someone has to buy them I suppose 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sallyh87 · 11/10/2023 21:08

I haven’t put my 5 month old in anything but a baby gro. Once again, I am clearly a lazy Mom 😂.

I tried to get my three year old to wear jeans the other day, she refused as they were uncomfortable. So I guess she will continue to wear leggings.

Do most people put young babies in proper trousers?

ZickZack · 11/10/2023 21:09

I take pride in what he wears.

This is so bizarre. Why?

And what's wrong with a long sleeved top and some comfy grey joggers? It's a baby. They don't give a stuff what they look like! They need loose, comfortable fitting clothes because that's more important than what they look like.

Good luck taking pride in what your child wears when he's two and covered in tomato sauce and mud :)

BurbageBrook · 11/10/2023 21:12

She was blunt and rude in how she said it, but she's absolutely right in what she said -- jeans are terribly uncomfortable for a baby. How would you like to sleep in your jeans?
