To be sickened by Hamas

1000 replies

MindfullyAmazedHorse · 10/10/2023 22:08

AIBU to be sickened by what Hamas terrorists have done to innocent Israeli citizens?

I am not totally familiar with the whole Israeli - Palestinian situation. I don’t think anything political can explain what has happened over the last few days.

It is utterly horrendous what Hamas has done. I also think that Hamas are no friend to the Palestinians. They are bringing wrath on them.

I have read that this is the worst attack on innocent Jewish people since the holocaust, which is horrifying.

I am struggling to process these recent events.

You linked a journalist not the Israeli army

Did you look at his feed?

What is wrong with his feed? Appart that he is critical of the Israeli government's crimes?

he's reporting both the actions of Hamas and Israel?

@BigBillyButterBollocks

Blockading a group of people so that they're deprived of medicine, food supplies, and water is a war crime and a crime against humanity in any circumstances.

"Depriving Palestinians of food, water and electricity while ensuring they can't get out (bombing the Egyptian border and the route towards it) is genocide. It has got nothing to do with defending Israel.

There will be a tribunal in the Hague some day for it if Israel doesn't stop in the next 48 hours"

+++

Actually Israel cutting off electricity to Gaza severely reduces Hamas military ability to operate, communicate and wage war on Israel.

This is not a war crime it is established military doctrine or if you think differently then that would make the Dambusters raid on Mohne equally a war crime.

I'm not really an expert on this, TBH. What is current international law? Blockades are an age-old military tactic, and didn't used to be seen as a war crime (because the enemy has the option of surrendering/negotiating peace before everyone starves to death). However, rules of war are very different in the modern world. What should Israel be doing to defeat Hamas? What legal tactics are open to them, given that the enemy refuses to recognise them as a state?

If it confirms your bias fine. I’ll take more than a journalist with a strong editorial view

Circumferences · 11/10/2023 14:29

Bottom line: if no Hamas attacks happened, nobody on either side would have died

Wow that's the most ill informed comment on the thread, well done.
Israel have been slaughtering the Palestinians for decades with or without Hamas.

Same.

The comments are illustrative of the mindset among a certain sector of the hard left, it's not a typical leftist view.

Same, I am very left-wing. But highly disappointed by some elements of the left

Itllbefine6 · 11/10/2023 14:10

OK, now you're talking! What do you mean? Where are Israeli settlers stealing homes? The blockades I can understand. I don't like it, but the Israelis decided this was the only way to stop Hamas gaining strength - the North did the same to the South during the US Civil War. What I'm trying to understand is why the Palestinians won't negotiate. Do they just not trust Israel to stick to an agreement? Do they think Israel is just greedy and will carry on trying to take land/houses etc. away from the Palestinians? Why the refusal to compromise?

There was a TV documentary a while back about Hebron. There was clear evidence that Palestinians were being ousted from their homes - front doors welded shut, and in some of the cases shown, the residents were forced to climb onto rooftops and smash their way into their own homes to gain access. There were also claims of apartheid in that Palestinians were not allowed in certain streets, market places being closed down etc. Can’t remember what it was called, but it’s available still on YouTube.

It's such a shame that so many people feel a need to "pick" one side or the other to support (other than people who actually live there/have family there) - all this does is whip up the hatred more and more. Really we should all be taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture.

The truth is that BOTH sides have done terrible things to the other. The second truth is that BOTH sides have civilians who have suffered and are continuing to suffer in the most inhumane ways. The third truth is that numerous other countries are involved in this conflict - it's not simply neighbours who hate each other, it's a battle for power in the middle east, with US and Iran both contributing significantly, among others.

Really, this is an international issue and it's high time the UN and others took responsibility to gather ALL relevant parties together to try to find a solution. As things stand, even if by some miracle they managed to get Israel and Palestine to agree to a one or two state solution (not remotely possible while Hammas and Netanyahu are in charge), Iran, Lebanon, the US etc would undoubtedly want to keep their fingers in the pie and I have no doubt they would eventually stir up trouble in the region again. I have serious concerns that this could lead to a WW3 type scenario but I very much hope I am wrong. Where are all the world's top diplomats? We need the UN to step in, desperately.

Why on earth would they allow it? If some external (I know, arguable in itself as the Brits were hardly external) force rocked up and asked you to hand over 20% of your landmass to a bunch of incomers, what would your reaction be?

I know what mine would be.

But the issue is, it wasn't an independent state. The land had been colonised for centuries, it was during the process of decolonisation that a Jewish state was created. There was also legitimate purchasing of land. So you're really misrepresenting the facts right from the inception of Israel.

I think we’ll have to hold our breath until the position of the likes of Russia, China and North Korea become clear. I think you’re right to be concerned

From an article explaining teh video.

“If I don’t steal your home, someone else will steal it,” was the answer given by an Israeli settler to Muna al-Kurd, a young Palestinian woman who accused him of stealing her home in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood in the occupied East Jerusalem.

The dialogue, captured on video by Palestinian Tamer Maqalda on Saturday, shows 23-year-old al-Kurd confronting the settler in the garden of her family home.

In the video, al-Kurd is heard telling the settler in English: “Jacob, you know that this is not your home.”
The settler replies : “Yes, but if I go, you don’t go back, so what’s the problem? Why are you yelling at me?”

Tinklyheadtilt · 11/10/2023 14:38

Someone actually trying to defend some of the illegal settlements by Israelis. @Itllbefine6 you should be ashamed of yourself.

Just to be clear to the right wing Israeli defenders here - YOU CAN CONDEMN HAMAS AND ALSO CRITICISE ISRAELI OCCUPATION

LemonyTicket · 11/10/2023 14:38

Arab citizens of Israel have the same rights enshrined in Israeli law as Jewish citizens of Israel.

Please don't bring up Palestinian citizens, because they are not Arab citizens of ISRAEL.

The only limits on this are when it's necessary for Israel's own protection. For example you cannot easily bring other Palestinians to live with you - and that is entirely necessary whilst living with naked threat and aggression from those people. Any reasonable person would obviously see that. But your posts on here have been disgusting throughout so I won't hold my breath!

And the Brits were the final colonists. It's hardly a great argument in favour of ethnic cleansing.

The state of Israel was hardly a process of decolonisation, unless you call highly discriminate murder by the British occupying forces - decolonisation.

The foundation of the state of Israel was , and remains, completely dependent on the West to support the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people.

SomeCatFromJapan · 11/10/2023 14:44

All the major news agencies are reporting on the Kfar Azar massacre. As I said previously the BBC actually used the term "beheadings", so I can in no way see how this can be described as fake news.

TrashedSofa · 11/10/2023 14:45

The settlers in the West Bank are lunatic arseholes. Who unfortunately have been empowered by the Hamas attacks, because they opposed the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza in 05 and one of the reasons was security. They always said there would be attacks like this with no Israeli military presence in Gaza.

There is so much antisemitism dressed up in whataboutery on these threads about Israel.

Hamas have committed utterly indecent, inhuman atrocities in crimes absolutely reminiscent of those perpetrated by other Islamist groups like ISIS.

There is no excuse. None.

Unfortunately antisemitism, like misogyny is still widely accepted by large swathes of society.

I am sick and tired of hearing that if you criticise the Israeli government you are antisemite. No government is above criticism. I vehemently disagree with Hamas and with what is happening to the Palestinians in Gaza (laying siege is a war crime). You can do both at the same time.
