Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

Ive been burgled also but would never want cameras inside my house and do not know of anyone who has them. How on earth can you feel comfortable in a home with them?

Would you be happy to work with cameras trained on you??!

We have cameras at work although I wouldn't say there were trained on me.

The op's would not trained on the nanny

@Antst are you alright? That's a bit far fetched isn't it.

Pretty sure I watched the same documentary and the guy who killed his wife was caught because the only time his wife was murdered the cameras had been turned off which lead the police to suspect him and finally arrest him. So the CCTV actually caught him out.

So having it was a benefit and just proved you right OP 😄

FFSWhatToDoNow · 08/10/2023 15:55

I only know one person with external cameras, and that’s FIL who is paranoid that gangs of burglars are plotting to steal the bits of the 1950s Morris Minor that he took apart in the 80s and “hasn’t got around” to putting back together yet.

saffronsoup · 08/10/2023 15:55

I would assume someone with cameras inside (beyond entrances and exits) are either voyeuristic or very controlling. I do find wanting to watch other people during private moments or when they don't know they are being observed to be creepy. I would not spend times in homes where I knew I was being recorded and watched. That crosses my personal privacy boundaries.

No, not normal.

This

our neighbours have about two cameras out front, two cameras out back. Definitely not normal!!! And they’re right busy bodies too who don’t leave the house!

LisaD1 · 08/10/2023 15:57

We have internal camera but it’s for the dogs, mainly as a dickhead neighbour complained to the council that they were barking when it was a house behind us. I set the camera up to prove that ours just sleep when we are out.

We never have it on unless we are out. I’d be hugely pissed off if I was the nanny being recorded/watched all day.

EmmaEmerald · 08/10/2023 15:57

OP
are guests aware that they are being filmed?

kw1091 · 08/10/2023 15:58

To me it sounds like the cameras are all a rouse so you can force your nanny to resign and you won’t have to pay redundancy

OldTinHat · 08/10/2023 15:59

I live alone and have cameras everywhere, inside and out. The inside ones don't record.

I have a carer and a cleaner and I've told them to turn the cameras round or put something over them whilst they're here if they aren't comfortable. They're not bothered in the slightest. But, why would they be, I suppose? They're doing nothing wrong.

You could suggest your nanny covers the cameras whilst she's working? But most workplaces have cameras, she's in her workplace and I'm sure you've not got your nose glued to the cameras, spying on her, 24/7?!

Moonlight222 · 08/10/2023 15:59

we have inside and out, our outdoor ones are on 24/7 indoor only switched on when we go away because it’s total invasion of privacy for all of us.

Marblessolveeverything · 08/10/2023 15:59

Surely it's a place of business if you are employed there . Irish law would recognise it as so. Perhaps UK is behind in the EU updates post Brexit.

Lorieandrews · 08/10/2023 15:59

I said that. I’ve got about 8 friends who are babies to central London homes and they’ve all got internal cameras. Shrug

daffodilandtulip · 08/10/2023 16:00

Outside is quite normal in some form but not inside.

Lizzieregina · 08/10/2023 16:01

Yes we are getting into slippery slope territory!

I’m a home child care provider (US) and cameras are becoming more common. I would not work somewhere that has cameras inside (employers have to disclose) not because I’m doing something wrong, but because as someone else mentioned, I sing loudly (and badly) and get silly with kids and I don’t mind kids seeing it but it’s not for everyone and I’d be self conscious to know people were watching.

Also, this trend of “watching” kids is going to get out of hand. My husband was at work one day and was chatting to a coworker when he pulled out his phone “to make sure his kid was up for school”. DH asked what he meant and he said he had a camera in his 12 year old son’s bedroom so he could keep an eye on him. That is a colossal invasion of privacy in my opinion. And only going to become more common as we go from watching infants and toddlers sleeping, to making sure they’re playing safely in another room while we wash dishes 🤷‍♀️ where does it end?

jannier · 08/10/2023 16:01

Do you go away and leave your home unattended weeks at a time if yes reasonable if no bloody odd.....are you thinking a household member is stealing from you

EggTheParrot · 08/10/2023 16:02

We've got inside cameras but they're for the dogs. Never on when we're in

WiFiNotWorking · 08/10/2023 16:03

camerawomana · 08/10/2023 14:29

Happy to cover them while she's there but I want them on when there is no one in the house. I have them on when we are home and don't see an issue for us tbh. Fair enough if she doesn't want them on but otherwise they're on for security.

‘ I have them on when we are home and don't see an issue for us tbh.’

Can you really not see the difference between you being filmed and you having access to the tapes, compared to you using your cameras to spy on your nanny and her phone use?!

I don’t know anyone with internal
cameras. But I am a bit older maybe as I am in my fifties and perhaps less paranoid than people seem to be nowadays.

Peachee · 08/10/2023 16:03

Is that you Jack Byrnes?

underneaththeash · 08/10/2023 16:04

We have 3 interior cameras (I think fewer than many of the people we know). One covering the back door, one the front and one on the landing which covers the bedroom doors. They've come in useful twice, once when we had our fire alarm go off - we could see the smoke and we could direct the neighbours into the right area for the potential fire and once when there was some bloke in the back garden and we could show the police his face as he was peering through our window.

We didn't have nannies at the time, but did have au pairs and we just told them about it and put it in the au pair version of a contract (a letter of introduction).

No-one ever had an issue with it and if they did, it would definitely ring alarm bells with me. However, your nanny does have an issue with it and unless it's already in her contract, if she has been with you over 2 years, she may have a claim against you for constructive dismissal if you push the issue. I'd do as you said, show her how to switch them off and ensure she switches them back on when leaving the house. If she's been with you under 2 years, you can just give notice anyway and use the cameras as an excuse, especially if you're not happy with her performance.

what are the non-recording ones for please?

Porridgeislife · 08/10/2023 16:04

What make are they? We have Google Nest cams inside and outside the house. We have our au pair set up as a familiar face so it doesn’t record her. Can yours do the same?

This! Also once my granddaughter was about 2 I stopped using the camera in her room whilst in her cot.
