Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

I would never work in a house with cameras or trust that they were off. Horribly invasive.

mayorofcasterbridge · 08/10/2023 15:16

Would you be happy to work with cameras trained on you??!

camerawomana · 08/10/2023 15:17

I'm just thinking about how many people I know have them.. my parents have them, my brother has them, my in laws have them, a couple of friends with young children have them, my granny has them, at least 4 people at work have them too. Inside and out...

I'm in the UK.

Not in the bedrooms and bathrooms but in the main living areas. In fact people were telling me I need to get them, before I had them. I didn't want them before the burglary ! So I do understand why you would not want them.

Most camera alarm system involve a camera pointed at a hallway door not in any rooms.

I'm literally constantly under CCTV in my office. Cameras are everywhere on every corner, wherever you go too.

We have cameras at work although I wouldn't say there were trained on me.

Quite a lot of people work in places with cameras on them all the time. Hospitals, police stations, shops, restaurants, government buildings, etc.

Why should working in a house make you exempt?

GalileoHumpkins · 08/10/2023 15:19

I'll keep the cameras because I feel safer having them

Are they on the whole time you're home? If so how does recording yourself and your family make you safer?
We don't have indoor cameras and don't know anyone that does.

Vocaladvocaat · 08/10/2023 15:21

Hey Nanny, while checking my cameras I noticed that you spent FOUR MINUTES SCROLLING YOUR PHONE INSTEAD OF LAVISHING ATTENTION ON my PFB!!!! This isn’t on Nanny. I pay you to work, not to scroll fb. Etc . Not surprised she’s not keen.

Lorieandrews · 08/10/2023 15:21

I would absolutely have camera if I’d been burgled

I completely understand why you’d want them.

if the nanny didn’t like it surely you could find one. I know of nannies in central London and nearly all of the houses they work in have cameras.

camerawomana · 08/10/2023 14:23

Most people I know have this...

I have lots inside, as I live in a high crime area. I don’t really see the problem. I’d question why she’s worried about them… what is she hiding?

Lorieandrews · 08/10/2023 15:23

Surely most people’s office have cameras?

Marblessolveeverything · 08/10/2023 15:25

What area are you in ? Given where I live the law is being challenged about excessive monitoring by multinationals it would be interesting to know where people are willingly allowing such an invasion of privacy.

You know if anything is recorded and saved in the cloud theoretically it can be hacked?

MammaTo · 08/10/2023 15:25

Have the ring doorbell and that’s it.

QueenFree · 08/10/2023 15:25

YABU

neverbeenskiing · 08/10/2023 15:26

I'm trying to gently get rid of her anyway. And no, I won't be hiring a new nanny, so this won't be an issue again. I'll keep the cameras because I feel safer having them.

This is such an odd thread. If you're dead set on the cameras regardless of how many people tell you YABU, and the nanny who objects to them isn't wanted or needed in your home anyway then why on earth did you post? It makes no sense. Also, slightly off topic but if you don't need a nanny why continue to pay for one? You don't have to pussyfoot around just tell her you don't need her anymore!

redxlondon · 08/10/2023 15:27

Just reading the comments, people must just be trying to make OP feel bad. Indoor cameras are so common now. Just look at Amazon Blink range and British Gas Hive. This is so odd, I don’t know why people find it weird….it’s a huge market, because of demand for these types of systems.

RicherThanYews · 08/10/2023 15:27

I have them because of the major crime issues here, both in and outside of my home. It's normal where I live too tbh. Can a compromise be reached with your Nanny?

We don't have indoor cameras and don't know anyone that does.

To be completely honest and I'll probably be flamed for this, but I'm using the cameras when I need to get jobs done around the house to make sure my kids are safe. So, say I'm downstairs and need to get some cleaning done in the kitchen and they're in the living room ( which is next door ) I'll also watch on the camera that they're not doing anything dangerous. Or if they're sleeping upstairs, the baby cameras alerts me when they're moving around. Or if my kids are outside and I just need to wash some dishes quickly, I can watch them on the cameras to make sure they're ok. My kitchen does overlook my garden but if they go around the corner I can't see. So for a de minutes I feel a bit safer being able to look on my phone while I get other stuff done..

We have 4 sets of doors, 3 french, at the back of our house, and have cameras internally, covering them and the kitchen living area.

We also have a camera in our front hall that covers the main entrance.

These can be viewed on our phones.

There are plenty of blind spots in the house, but all entrances are covered internally and externally on the ground floor.

I know of numerous people with similar set ups.

People often ignore burglar alarms but a good camera can be a real deterrent IMO.

Billappa · 08/10/2023 15:30

Cameras inside = odd

Guess there are millions of “odd” people then 🙄

KnackeredBack · 08/10/2023 15:33

We have a single camera indoors, as it covers all main entrances into the house. We are away quite a lot and from dealing with the police the last time we came home to people in the garden (likely casing we were told) the police advised to have an indoor camera to catch anyone coming into the house. Apparently if people are in your garden they're not trespassing (even if clearly looking through your windows to see who's in/what's there) hence they said that if we were then burglarised, we would have a better chance of catching if an indoor camera, when person was then definitely trespassing. We don't look at it as a matter of course, although it alerts us to our dog barking (we have one) etc, so it fulfils a few different roles.

duchiebun · 08/10/2023 15:33

Surely most people’s office have cameras?

And roads, shops etc

It's estimated you are likely to be captured on UK CCTV up to 70 times per day. (2022)

KickHimInTheCrotch · 08/10/2023 15:33

Why would you think having cameras inside your house prevents crime? Surely most burglars wear face coverings/hoods. I don't think the presence of cameras is a deterrant.
