Recently been burgled and have now set up indoor and outdoor security cameras.

Nanny isn't happy about the inside ones. I'm happy to switch them off during the day but I don't want to get rid of them entirely.

Don't most people have cameras everywhere nowadays anyway ?

Yes. I have a Ring door bell, a separate set of outside CCTV cameras and another inside set of ADT cameras.

Ive been burgled. Its hard to explain the feeling it gives you and how vulnerable it makes you feel.

Id get rid of the nanny rather than the CCTV

If you want to get rid of the nanny, do it properly.

What do you plan to do with the cameras as DC gey older? That's awful too IMO. I also wouldn't want to be guest in your home.

That's funny because most homes I go to have at least one camera inside.

I don't have cameras in the bedrooms or bathrooms (although I have baby cameras for my children as they're very young ). So yes I guess they have cameras in their bedrooms but not for much longer.

Outside is ok but not cctv that can pick up people speaking from 20 plus metres away. Our neighbours had this and the police told them to take them down.

Inside is completely unreasonable….what are you thinking.

This is a complete invasion on a persons privacy.

WillowCraft · 08/10/2023 15:02

I don't even have baby monitor cameras, the whole thing is creepy.

BuffaloBelinda · 08/10/2023 15:03

I was just trying to make a point that her resigning isn't a worry for me. And getting a new nanny isn't a worry either.

If the cameras are more important to you than she is then give her notice. You are incompatible.

I don't know anyone with cameras in their houses.

Agree
Really creepy

duchiebun · 08/10/2023 15:03

Lots of people with alarm systems have an indoor camera but I don't think alarms are that common

I've always had these. Tbh the cameras downstairs also help me have a tiny bit of independence and peace from my children as I can watch them when I'm in another room and can intervene if something looks unsafe.

Ring etc doorbell cameras are very common

Smartiepants79 · 08/10/2023 15:04

No one I know has indoor cameras and I’d hate it.
I have been burgled in the past, it’s doesn’t change my mind.
We so have a camera on the outside. That is now quite normal.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 08/10/2023 15:04

The only person I know with an indoor camera uses it to shout at her dog to get off the sofa!

duchiebun · 08/10/2023 15:04

We have cameras in our house but they only switch on when the alarm system is on and then activated. It sends images to the alarm monitoring company. It’s a fairly bog standard system

same

JollyHolly30 · 08/10/2023 15:04

@camerawomana

What country do you live in?
I get the feeling it's not the UK as it certainly isn't the norm or even in the small minority within my social circle.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 08/10/2023 15:05

We're going to get an indoor camera that just looks at our back door area, purely because it's easier to set top than an outdoor one, with all the wiring etc.

Won't point anywhere else though. Literally just the rear entrance.

JaneJeffer · 08/10/2023 15:05

Closing the stable door

Alika · 08/10/2023 15:05

We've never been burgled but have a full security system, including outdoor cameras. I think that's pretty normal.
We do have one indoor camera but it's only set up if we go on holiday and the house will be empty for more than a day or 2. When not being used it's kept in its box in the cupboard, I wouldn't like having constant indoor surveillance at home, even if it was my own.

SylvieLaufeydottir · 08/10/2023 15:08

I had a stalker who broke into my house. We have several outdoor cameras now. Inside, none. There is no need if entry points externally are covered.

I don't for a second think your nanny is unusual or unreasonable in objecting.

Oldladycat · 08/10/2023 15:08

We were burgled several times when I was growing up. Including them entering and taking everything, inc the car to transport it all, from downstairs while we were asleep upstairs.

I agree that the horrific feelings of fear, violation and vulnerability are not understood by those who haven't been burgled.

However, I would say I don't think cameras will do a lot. Burglers know the police aren't going to do anything these days so at best they may be a slight deterrent but my worry would be it might make my house more attractive - id worry people might think I have unusually high value items I want to protect. (This may be my paranoid side talking however!)

I'd also hate to go to a home I know had cameras
Even more so if I had to work in one! I worked for a retailer once who had cameras on the shopfloor that the manager would watch from upstairs and it made for a tense, paranoid atmosphere.

Hbh17 · 08/10/2023 15:09

I don't know anyone who has cameras - how creepy! If I were the nanny in this house, I'd hate it too.

Oldladycat · 08/10/2023 15:10

@JaneJeffer although I'm not sure cameras do much, taking action after a burglary can help. They often come back 6 months or so later once you've restocked on the insurance. This happened to us. Police said it was expected. We were just about to install alarms and they came back just before we did.

I'm surprised how many people don't think it's normal- surely people have cameras these days rather than an alarm (that no-one responds to anyway- when alarms go off round here people just roll their eyes and assume it's a system malfunction!!).

However, totally reasonable on her part that she wants them off while she's working- you definitely need ro find a way to make this happens consistently and to give her confidence that they are off too.

godmum56 · 08/10/2023 15:13

I have got an indoor camera...actually thinking about it, I don't need it any more. I had it when I had dogs and a nasty neighbour was harassing me about them barking. They went so far as making complaints to the council about me and I got quite a scarey letter from their environmental complaints department. Long story short, when I told the council person I had monitoring and could prove that it wasn't my dogs, the whole thing went away. They tried it again a few months later (they really were a batshit couple) but this time the bloke came to my front door and started yelling at me so I got the police involved. dogs both died of old age btw

Sirzy · 08/10/2023 15:13

I find the idea of cameras constantly re riding in the house concerning. Down the line I can see systems like that creating more problems than they solve. Privacy is important!
