To still let 4.5 year old have dummy

4.5 year old ds still has his dummies at night. He would have them all day if we let him. He loves them and they bring him great comfort. I know that ideally I should take them off him. I’ve tried talking to him about it and said about the dummy fairy and a new toy but he’s adamant that he doesn’t want any new toys and wants to keep his dummies.

I also have a 3 month old baby and ds is really struggling with the adjustment. He’s lashing out a bit and nursery have even mentioned that he’s seeking a lot of 1-1 attention and comfort.

I just don’t know if this is the right time to take away something that gives him huge comfort when he’s already struggling.

I guess I’m just looking for advice on what you would do in this situation?

I did the same: take the dummy out my child’s mouth whenever I saw him with it asleep. You’ll get there soon!

Another update for anyone that’s interested. Last night after ds was asleep I removed the dummies from his bed altogether. He slept til 4am and then he woke up looking for them. He shouted on me but I decided to give him a few minutes. He managed to go back to sleep and slept until 6am! I’m so pleased at how well he’s doing.

I’ll probably continue to let him have them at bedtime as it saves him any distress. Half an hour max per day shouldn’t have any impact on his teeth right?

I would not buy any extra dummies at this point. Let his old dummies disintergrate and become too old and die of natural causes -though he still might like to hold them.
