Yodel driver opened my front door

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 10:57

Heard a knock at the door when I was in the bath. Shouted hang on, wrapped a towel round me and went downstairs.

Found Yodel driver stood in my doorway with the front door open taking a picture.

This isn't OK is it? I've tried calling Yodel but it's just automated and I've tried their live chat but that was useless too. I don't keep the front door locked if I'm in the house but will in future!

Last post.

I should have locked my door. I didn't know this was a thing. Thank you for taking the time to explain to me that drivers just let themselves in now, I had no idea because its never happened before.

From now on, I will make sure the door is locked whenever I am in the house.

Thank you

Don't feel bad @Neverwatchedgameofthrones , it took me ages to get used to having a handle on the outside when our door was changed, never had to worry with the old Yale lock 🔒

I find it totally baffling that people don't keep their front door locked.

A lot of people don't where I live, but that's because they don't mind people coming in.

Mamatolittleboy · 05/10/2023 11:43

@VickyEadieofThigh Agree with this comment

No he shouldn’t have opened your door! But omg you’re putting yourself at such high risk when it comes to your safety and possessions. Maybe this is a lesson to you that you can learn from

Yanbu for being annoyed about delivery guy opening your door but yabu to be so slack with security x

MiddleagedBeachbum · 05/10/2023 11:43

In the past year I’ve had about 4 times of delivery drivers opening my front door and leaving the parcel inside - I agree it is over stepping but on the other hand, I’ve been grateful as otherwsie wouldn’t of received it that day….

Mine only locks and unlocks with a key. I'm a bit strange in that I am frightened of fire, so I normally keep it unlocked if I am on my own for that reason. You can't leave keys by the front door any more and I'm always frightened I wouldn't have time to get out. Stupid, I know but there we are

I can’t quite believe how many are saying it’s normal where they live.
The delivery drivers in our area leave parcels in a safe place or with a neighbour, I’ve never yet seen one opening a front door!
Do you all live in some parallel universe to me where no one ever get’s burgled?
I never leave my doors unlocked even when I’m in the house (and certainly not when I’m in he shower/bath), everyone else I know locks there doors too.

Glitterblue · 05/10/2023 11:45

I should add that our cats do run in from the porch the minute the door handle goes down, which is why we don’t worry about couriers opening the door - and if I’m in the shower or bath or sleeping or whatever I lock the inner door in case anyone just comes in, and the cats are inside with me.

Alargeoneplease89 · 05/10/2023 11:46

Probably thought you shouted does open.. if your in the shower surely it makes sense to lock your door. I think you are being precious.

Mumof2teens79 · 05/10/2023 11:46

I wouldn't have a problem with this.
We have two front doors, external porch dor plus door from porch into house.
I don't leave our door open/unlocked, especially if in the bath or sleeping! It's a yale lock so default is locked and we chose this type of lock for this very reason.
But we do leave the porch door unlocked and encourage delivery people to open the door and leave things...we have regular drivers that know to do this
Much better than on door step or missed completely.

Years ago at a different house (with no porch) I accidentally left front door ajar when I left for work. Came home to find postman must have realised, had put post on stairs and shut door behind him

Leonere · 05/10/2023 11:48

I know someone who does deliveries for amazon. He told me that they do this because they get given crazy numbers of parcels to deliver each day by their bosses. He said it's just not possible to deliver them all but they get into serious trouble if they don't manage their allocated deliveries each day so this saves time rather than waiting for people to get to their doors if they aren't fast.

Hate to break it to you OP, but burglars do this too.

Our doors have keys open and lock with keys only, we just always keep the keys in the lock and open/lock when needed.
Statistically, you are more likely to get robbed than have a house fire.

IAmHeartless · 05/10/2023 11:49

I would also not be happy with someone opening the door and letting themselves in after trying the door. I’ve never had someone try the door, they just leave it on the doorstep.

The leaving the door unlocked is a different matter. But do follow it up

Abergale · 05/10/2023 11:50

Wow you are very lucky it was just delivery driver. Thieves try doors all the time. They could have been grabbed your car keys/handbag before you’d even heard them.

Ironically, doing that was exactly how I got burgled!

I don't understand the bit about the parcel being picked back up. Surely you were there to talk to him, so why not get the parcel then?

Then, if you closed the door, and left the parcel on the step, how do you know rhey came back for it and not someone else picking it up?

Olika · 05/10/2023 11:50

I am more pissed off of him taking the parcel away. Where I live I haven't seen couriers opening doors and personally I would feel uncomfortable about it but our door is locked anyway. I would complain to Yodel though as the driver taking the parcel away is just too weird.

There’s a halfway, in that you leave the key in the lock and door locked whilst you’re in? So you feel you can get out but you are safe?

historyrepeatz · 05/10/2023 11:52

Wow I've never heard of delivery drivers opening doors unless a porch. I'd have a start if I heard the door being tried! I think they might end up attacked if they did that around here.

Op my door locks to the outside automatically when closed but isn't locked on the inside iykwim so I don't need a key to get out of a fire but somebody can't open the door to get in. If we are all out I double lock it from the outside.

I was in a towel. The parcel was large and heavy. I closed the door to grab my dressing gown. I saw them through the window walk back to their van, get in it, come back and take the parcel away again. Hope that helps.

I know, they have their crafty ways of getting in, that’s why I also have a bolt too.

The only time I have been burgled, I was in and left my lock in the door. I don't do it because of that.

I accept that I will lock my doors in future.
