Yodel driver opened my front door

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 10:57

Heard a knock at the door when I was in the bath. Shouted hang on, wrapped a towel round me and went downstairs.

Found Yodel driver stood in my doorway with the front door open taking a picture.

This isn't OK is it? I've tried calling Yodel but it's just automated and I've tried their live chat but that was useless too. I don't keep the front door locked if I'm in the house but will in future!

You're bonkers for leaving your front door unlocked. Stop that madness.

Shutting the door and leaving the parcel outside could be perceived as delivery being refused. Don't be too surprised if the parcel gets returned to the sender.

Thank you. I have already contacted the sender who are having the parcel returned to them and have been refunded. I appreciate your help.

I've had this before and complained. It was Amazon and I was in the garden so didn't hear the door. They seem to have written a note to delivery drivers on my account to say "don't open door to deliver" because occasionally a driver will mention it! I found it very unsettling as I was home alone. Pretty stupid move on their part too as the dog probably wouldn't have liked it if he weren't with me at the time!

Edit to add: I don't leave door unlocked anymore!

Yep. I'm sufficiently scared straight now, believe me! Xx

This is absolutely not a thing in my part of the country and the fact that the OP has never heard of it suggests that it’s not a thing where she is either. And delivery drivers can win - they can knock and if there’s no answer either follow alternative delivery instructions or don’t attempt to deliver. It’s not fucking rocket science.

I guess you missed the bit where their timings are really tight - and not delivering just makes that worse. That's why they can't win.

If a delivery driver opening an unlocked door and leaving the parcel isn't a thing where op is - then surely he wouldn't have done it?

Well it's a first for me and I get quite a lot delivered.

But he opened my front door to do it? I didn't open it, the driver did. When I came downstairs he had already opened my door and was stood with it wide open?

Weirdly, this is a thing now. They all do it. I guess it's to make sure the package is in and safe if door unlocked, as they can't be blamed for it going missing from behind bin or whatever. I would lock your door as a matter of safety though. Leaving it unlocked isn't safe, unfortunately. I would take this experience as a reminder of that.

All the drivers round here do this and I don't mind at all.

Did you say anything to him like "WTF are you doing open my door?!"

I pretty much did this to an Amazon driver once - he just looked at me blankly like he didn't understand. Door is normally locked, just wasn't that day as we were were around the house.

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 11:34

IslaWinds · 05/10/2023 11:26

Why would you do that? Didn’t you want your package?

It was big and heavy and I was in a towel. I was going to out a dressing gown on first. I didn't want it enough to attempt to pick it up with only a towel wrapped round me, no

It's not a thing here either op!
And no one should feel entitled to open someone's front door without prior permission regardless of time restrictions, after all they could be a burglar or worse !
And what about dogs or young children running out the door!

I cannot believe someone leaves the door unlocked when they are upstairs in the bath ! fFS

TibetanTerrah · 05/10/2023 11:36

I'm so confused. If he'd already taken photos showing the parcel as 'delivered', why the fuck did he take the parcel back?

And if he'd only left it on your step (outside, I assume?) then why did he need to open the door in the first place?

Actually my main concern in all this, is that I didn't know that drivers let themselves in and I have dogs and house cats. I was worried one of them might have escaped when he stood with the door open.

CrazyHamsterLady · 05/10/2023 11:37

It’s not ok but EVRI did that to me once. I was not very happy to see the driver in my hallway. Luckily, the lady is someone I see regularly every other day so I wasn’t too miffed but I doubt it’s standard practice.

BahamaMama33 · 05/10/2023 11:37

Is there a reason you don't lock your doors? Anyone who has bad intentions could have walked in your home whilst you're vulnerable in the bath. Please lock your doors in future

Wingedharpy · 05/10/2023 11:39

Get yourself a porch, OP - that way, you have 2 front doors.
1 to leave open and ajar for delivery person and inner 1 to keep locked at all times (with key removed).

WillowCraft · 05/10/2023 11:39

He shouldn't have opened your door, obviously. What if a young child had got out or a dog or cat or parrot etc? Or you were naked in the hallway? Can't believe so many people think this is fine!

Different if it's a glass porch where you see in and it's separate to the house.

You shouldn't have to lock your door but I think I would in future if I were you.

On the other hand I'd never open the door to a stranger in a towel either. A long dressing gown would be the minimum.

This is the consequence of opening up competition to cowboy companies who don't train their staff properly and who put too much pressure on them.

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 11:39

Last post.

I should have locked my door. I didn't know this was a thing. Thank you for taking the time to explain to me that drivers just let themselves in now, I had no idea because its never happened before.

From now on, I will make sure the door is locked whenever I am in the house.

Thank you

People sometimes forget @BahamaMama33 , I usually always lock mine but if I come in with bags and kids sometimes I forget, however an unlocked door isn't an invitation! Why even try the handle?

Live in a rented house so not an option

Our couriers all just open the door and put things in but we have a porch and we’ve got a sign on the door saying to do that - and if we’re out we just shut the inner door and leave the porch door unlocked. Our Yodel guy always bellows “HELLLOOOOOOO!” and if I don’t answer he does it again and again!! I was on the phone to the Dr the other day and was in the middle of listening to him I heard him bellowing HELLLLLOOOO so I ignored him and he did it again and again - I’d just got up to go through and was going to point to the phone but he was just leaving and closing the door as I got there.

Weirdly as I was typing this, there was a loud knock at the door and it was that very Yodel guy! He didn’t open the door today because he saw our cats on the windowsill and said he didn’t know if they were allowed out - which they’re not - so that was really thoughtful of him and I appreciated that.

I wish I hadn't gone in a towel. I thought it might be the postman and I was just going to talk to him through the door. I didn't answer the door, it was already wide open

I find it totally baffling that people don't keep their front door locked.
