Yodel driver opened my front door

Heard a knock at the door when I was in the bath. Shouted hang on, wrapped a towel round me and went downstairs.

Found Yodel driver stood in my doorway with the front door open taking a picture.

This isn't OK is it? I've tried calling Yodel but it's just automated and I've tried their live chat but that was useless too. I don't keep the front door locked if I'm in the house but will in future!

Hey,

Thanks. Lots of people, including yourself have told ve IABU. I then made a post where I thanked those people for explaining to me why I am.

Thank you too, I have learned something today and I am not disagreeing with any of you. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this and have not said anyone else is wrong, just that it wasn't something I have heard of before.

I sincerely hope that helps you because I am agreeing with you. I've said I'm stupid, I've said I didn't know. I've agreed with people. I can't make that any clearer.

A lot of people said YANBU too, I think it about 50/50ish in the voting at the moment (and looking at the comments I would say people feel more strongly about you leaving your door unlocked than the situation with the delivery...).

For what it's worth, I think it's bonkers that the delivery man opened your front door to leave a parcel, and the fact that it wasn't locked is completely irrelevant - he shouldn't have tried in the first place.

The options for deliveries are clearly stated when you track your parcel: 1) you're at home, 2) deliver to neighbour or safe place. I have never heard or seen 3) open my front door if I don't answer, for an obvious safety reason!

I have parcels delivered almost daily and I've never seen anything like this
The courier shouldn't have taken the parcel back if he heard to say " hang on"
I shout out as I'm disabled so they know I'm in, they often take Parcel and leave just outside my door then
He certainly shouldn't have just walked in

In an update: the retailer very kindly contacted Yodel without me asking them to.

Yodel have quite clearly said it's not OK, have apologised profusely and are looking into it urgently. I was read the response by the area manager and it does seem they are taking it seriously.

I love that on the one hand I'm stupid for not locking my door but on the other hand, I'm stupid for not being happy that the delivery person just let themselves in. It's not just the delivery man that can't win!

The moral of this story is that if you don't like strangers letting themselves into your house, lock the door because apparently large swathes of the community not only think this is acceptable but desirable. Let's hope those poor delivery people don't get bitten by a dog or accused of something they haven't done. Let's hope they are all honest and no one would use this to say they have delivered a parcel when they haven't.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to type out kind messages, whether or not they agreed with me. Also thank you to the less kind people, you have given me a great source of entertainment today.

Great, I am sure you are delighted that some poor fucker will get a bollicking for trying to deliver your mail safely and you closing the door in his face so he had no other option than to pick up the parcel and walk away. I hope the next parcel they leave is in your bin on bin day.

If you only want kind messages in agreement don't ask people AIBU....you apparently alrthink you are not.

historyrepeatz · 05/10/2023 17:02

You can say yabu without being unkind.

No, the moral of the story is any householder who leaves their front door unlocked when they are out of sight for a period of time in the bath (and out of hearing if under the shower) and in particular naked and hence vulnerable is rather naive and one might say asking for trouble.

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 12/10/2023 11:17

In a final uodate:

Yodel took this extremely seriously as it turns out. The driver won't be delivering to me (or I imagine anyone else) anymore. I can only say nice things about their response.

I'm sure lots of lovely people will now come and tell me how I awful I am, as is tradition here but to those of you living in the real world: this was very quickly rectified and it turns out, I was not unreasonable. Sorry that hurts some of you who thinks I should have had an epiphany thanks to your comments. but it is not acceptable for any of you to go around letting yourself into someone's home univited, whether or not the person is "asking for it" and no matter how much of a rush you are in.

Oh, and they are welcome to leave my parcels in the bin @vapesareforsnakes, if they did that, it would be classed as not delivered and the delivery company would need to refund the retailer, so its no problem for me at all xxx

Poor driver. I work for RM and have accidentally opened front doors that I had assumed were porch doors lots of times. Hope you are happy they have now lost their job.

FOJN · 12/10/2023 11:36

So you left the front door unlocked whilst you were in the bath because you don't expect people to open it without an invitation?

Unfortunately people who intend to steal from you or hurt you don't give a fuck about social conventions or the law so you were lucky it was just a delivery driver.

Rather than accept that you were shocked and treat the experience as a wake up call you have lost this man his job.

Well done.

Unreasonable to the bitter end.

And you've cost that poor driver his job (which you sound unreasonably pleased about) during a cost of living crisis.
