Yodel driver opened my front door

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 10:57

Heard a knock at the door when I was in the bath. Shouted hang on, wrapped a towel round me and went downstairs.

Found Yodel driver stood in my doorway with the front door open taking a picture.

This isn't OK is it? I've tried calling Yodel but it's just automated and I've tried their live chat but that was useless too. I don't keep the front door locked if I'm in the house but will in future!

Is this a Yodel thing (open door photo of parcel)? My deliveries normally get left on the step.

Blackbyrd · 05/10/2023 11:15

Who's dumb enough to have a bath with the front door unlocked, especially when expecting a parcel? Then has the cheek to come on here whining about it. For what it's worth, delivery drivers will go to open a door sometimes thinking it's a porch door. Then quickly have to make the delivery upon realising their "mistake" when it's actually the main entrance. Yodel quite rightly won't give a shit

I can completely understand why he took the parcel back.

It wasn't delivered. You shut the door and left it outside. Why didn't you take it in before closing the door?

And now there's photographic evidence that the parcel was delivered!

Because it was massive and heavy and I was in a towel? I did explain that part

I understand him taking the parcel back too.

Wait, so not only are you trying to contact yodel to inform them that he opened your door but also to inform them that after he had taken a photograph of the parcel, he actually took the parcel away even after you asked what he was doing? !

Me. I'm dumb enough. Thank you for your kind advice.

A lot of couriers/companies take a photo of either the package inside the property or with me holding the parcel, not of my face clearly. I'm just confused that you had a bath with the door unlocked, I would never do that.My door is always locked.

By using the door handle. It wasn't locked.

Lock your front door. Why is it unlocked?

NoGNoDNoClue · 05/10/2023 11:19

Honestly, delivery drivers can't win.

They get ridiculous schedules that are important to do in the time they are given, then when they do get the chance to do an easy delivery, people complain.

He opened the door to leave your parcel just inside. He didn't come in.

If you don't want to fine a delivery driver the option to open the door - leave it locked. People often leave their doors unlocked when they are expecting a delivery and work from home, where I live at least. So they can get the delivery without leaving their teams meeting. There's no way for the driver not to know that you weren't doing that.

BarnacleBeasley · 05/10/2023 11:20

I actually think the weirdest part of the story is that he didn't talk to you when you asked him what he was doing. He seems to have thought 'oh no, it can't be her parcel because she doesn't know what I'm doing!', then fled in embarrassment, taking the unwanted parcel with him!

vapesareforsnakes · 05/10/2023 11:20

My drivers always open my door and pop the parcel in and very grateful I am to them.

I don't disagree with this. What I have never experienced before, is a parcel company opening a front door (no porch), taking a photo of the parcel in the open doorway without the householder being there. This is a new one to me.

He didn't flee. He stood there looking at me for a few seconds. He got in his van, then came back and took the parcel off the step where it had been left.

I’m sorry but some of these responses are bat shit. @Neverwatchedgameofthrones leaving your front door open is not an invitation for a strange man or anyone else to open it, you did not “ask for it” and it’s not your fault. Based on some of these responses, it will only be a matter of time before someone suggests that walking around in a towel in your own home is you just asking to be assaulted by said strange man who opened your door. If you’re unable to get through to customer services, I suggest you make a complaint to both Yodel and the company you ordered from via social media.

I would never expect a stranger to just open my front door!
It's never been a thing for all of the years I've lived in my house, not to mention anyone who has dogs would find this very dangerous.

Yeah, this is weird. He's decided that you leaving it outside and closing the door meant you didn't want it. But he could have just talked to you!

VeridicalVagabond · 05/10/2023 11:26

Lesson learned to lock your door I think! I have friends who live in cities who are appalled that I often forget to lock mine or even close it fully so I'm just as guilty. Worst thing we've ever had wander in unannounced was a cow, though.

This is absolutely not a thing in my part of the country and the fact that the OP has never heard of it suggests that it’s not a thing where she is either. And delivery drivers can win - they can knock and if there’s no answer either follow alternative delivery instructions or don’t attempt to deliver. It’s not fucking rocket science.

[He didn't flee. He stood there looking at me for a few seconds. He got in his van, then came back and took the parcel off the step where it had been left]

The problem with this is also he now has proof he delivered your parcel, it's now going to be difficult for you to argue that it wasn't delivered!
Let's hope he's honest.

loislovesstewie · 05/10/2023 11:27

BTW, I have a front door then a little enclosed space with another door into the hall, some people where I am don't lock the first door during the day but lock the inner door , I lock the outer door so it must be confusing for couriers. One driver tells me that residents often shout 'doors open' or the like when he knocks. So it is a thing.

MassageForLife · 05/10/2023 11:28

Shutting the door and leaving the parcel outside could be perceived as delivery being refused. Don't be too surprised if the parcel gets returned to the sender.

All of my delivery drivers put it round the side, which is also unlocked. I've never, ever had someone open my front door. I can't imagine what would happen if someone had a dog, it can't be safe for the driver aside from anything else?

I've never had anyone open my front door in all 42 years of life. Nor have I ever opened someone else's front door except my myms when she was old and I had a key. I had no idea this was a thing, otherwise I would have locked it.

Delivery driver did this to me too, I was in garden heard the doorbell and by the time I got to the front door there was a parcel left in my hallway!
Very cheeky I thought but I didn't report it but I do keep the door locked now!
