Yodel driver opened my front door

Neverwatchedgameofthrones · 05/10/2023 10:57

Heard a knock at the door when I was in the bath. Shouted hang on, wrapped a towel round me and went downstairs.

Found Yodel driver stood in my doorway with the front door open taking a picture.

This isn't OK is it? I've tried calling Yodel but it's just automated and I've tried their live chat but that was useless too. I don't keep the front door locked if I'm in the house but will in future!

@Neverwatchedgameofthrones

You're being unreasonable! You should lock your door from the inside - always, and especially when you're holed away in the bathroom. Anybody could walk in and rob you or attack you. Why are you not locking your door? That's a given, especially for a female on her own in the house.

Surely having the delivery man popping the package into the house, is better than having to re-arrange the delivery (and then possibly miss it again!!!) I think he did you a favour, and I think you're complaining for nothing. Lock your flipping door or dedicate a safe space for your package to be left. Did you not know the package was coming? These people give a 2 hour time slot. You must have known it was coming. What a lot of fuss about nothing. 🙄

Why do people do this?! Confused

It's common here. If the bloke was inside my kitchen I'd think it was freaking weird and wrong but opening the door planning to pop the parcel just inside the door is normal. There is no I'll intent otherwise he wouldn't be taking a photo of the parcel and dealing with the parcel. It's purely to protect your delivery. Nothing precious is directly inside my door. I like that mine do this. Mine probably doesn't even step foot in my house. Just reaches in. I struggle to see the problem. It saves me the considerable hassle of having to arrange a re delivery or having to go to a depot to collect. I feel like it's something from a bygone era. Common sense and all. It's like the nice delivery drivers who stop to gather my post out of my post box on their way up (looooong driveway) and hand it to me with my parcel or work people in my house who bring my mobile phone to me if it's ringing and I've left it near them and I'm in another room. Just people being helpful. I don't feel violated 😵‍💫

IHaveAskedYouThriceNow · 05/10/2023 11:58

Whether the door was locked or not (I live in a quiet village - no one locks their doors!) he shouldn’t be opening your door unless you have an agreement for him to do so - I’m flabbergasted that anyone thinks this is normal!

If anyone opened my door my dog would either run away or would bite them!

It’s normal here for parcels to be left on your doorstep.

Wingedharpy · 05/10/2023 11:59

Don't leave keys in the lock.
If you keel over, (or drown in the bath), no-one else, with a door key, can get in to you.
Hang on a hook, near door, but out of sight/inaccessible to burglar from letter box.

helpfulperson · 05/10/2023 12:00

I do think he may well have misinterpreted what you shouted. You must have been fairly close to the door to expect him to be able to hear you clearly.

Glitterybee · 05/10/2023 12:00

delivery people always open my front door and leave the parcel inside and they have to take a photo for evidence

im very grateful, can’t imagine being cross about this

Hey,

Thanks. Lots of people, including yourself have told ve IABU. I then made a post where I thanked those people for explaining to me why I am.

Thank you too, I have learned something today and I am not disagreeing with any of you. I appreciate you taking the time to explain this and have not said anyone else is wrong, just that it wasn't something I have heard of before.

I sincerely hope that helps you because I am agreeing with you. I've said I'm stupid, I've said I didn't know. I've agreed with people. I can't make that any clearer.

Me. I'm dumb enough. Thank you for your kind advice.

Good to see that you’ve acknowledged it was entirely your own fault that this apparently highly distressing situation arose.

Yep, have done plenty of times now. Never said it was highly distressing either.

Taking a bath with the door unlocked, seriously? He probably thought you were coming on to him slinking downstairs in a towel indeed! No wonder he ran for it & took the parcel.

Anyway @Neverwatchedgameofthrones lesson learned!!! No harm done!!!

Now go and watch Game of Thrones! Grin

Sometimes I think I must be missing a bit of brain. In the OP's circumstances, I would have just said "Thank you!" and carried on with my day!

partypant · 05/10/2023 12:46

I second this.

I similarly learnt when a driver opened the door and my puppy nearly escaped. To be fair, he probably thought it was a porch, but it's my boot/utility room.

We live rurally and with a large family, at least one door is often left unlocked by mistake. Children leave and return from front door for the school bus, adults leave from boot/ utility room door to walk dogs twice-daily or get to car on driveway. I check doors several times a day as I pass by and especially when alone.

Have you actually read any of the OP's replies? She has said that she was wrong lots of times! I feel you should apologise for your rather rude post.

How can burglars get in but no one else then?

WarmSunnySkies · 05/10/2023 13:26

No, YANBU at all, this is really inappropriate and a complete violation, assuming it wasnt in your delivery instructions he trespassed into your property without permission.

I'd be very angry if this happened to me, especially as you were only in a towel and vulnerable (and considering you may well have been in even more of a state of undress in your own home when he entered, which obviously you're well within your rights to be!) I do tend to keep my doors locked even when I'm home but wouldn't expect a delivery person to just wander in regardless. I would report this so it doesn't happen again.

Caiti19 · 05/10/2023 13:29

I feel these drivers are damned if they do, damned if they don't.

If the parcel is left outside, they are open to complaints of "I was inside the house, why did he leave it outside - now it's drenched!"

If the door is open here, drivers will drop the parcel into the hall, which I appreciate.

Wingedharpy · 05/10/2023 13:47

WillowCraft · 05/10/2023 13:25

If the key is in the lock, a legitimate visitor, with their key, will not be able to get their key in situ from the outside.
Burglars come equipped with glass cutters, hooks, fishing rods and all manner of stuff to get access to the key in the lock via cutting hole in glass, using hook and hands through letter box etc.

Wingedharpy · 05/10/2023 13:50

I run night classes for burglars @WillowCraft . - not really😉

(not being a pedant, just laughing at this!)

greenhydrangea · 05/10/2023 14:11

How come you're so laid back about him retrieving the parcel he'd just delivered?

It is alarming he opened your front door - but I would never leave my front door unlocked if I was taking a bath or shower.

pd339 · 05/10/2023 14:21

Happens all the time where I live (Devon). Better that than leaving parcels out in the rain in my view.
