Towards the end of Sep/early Oct the weather does often fluctuate, but I expect by mid October the air to be a lot crisper. I’ll be more worried about climate change in about 3 weeks. I can’t wait for jumpers and soups already, though!

RampantIvy · 30/09/2023 07:39

Only in London.

We have 18 degrees forecast for Sunday then it goes down to 14 and 15 degrees.

BlueIgIoo · 30/09/2023 07:40

My friend's birthday is the first week of October and it's very often sunny. I remember being away at a holiday cottage with him 15 years ago and it being better weather than we'd have for much of the summer. Climate change is happening and we should all be terrified, but a random week of sunshine isn't necessarily indicative that things have got worse in the past couple of years or whatever.

CyberCritical · 30/09/2023 07:40

We had 20+ degrees at Halloween the other year, we were all in shorts and T-shirts.

October can be a bit up and down.

Iam4eels · 30/09/2023 07:40

It's normal for the weather to be unsettled this time of year and a bit up and down, it's usually around mid-October when it finally turns and is reliably more chilly.

Sigmama · 30/09/2023 07:41

It's not just up to government and corporates

Hufflepods · 30/09/2023 07:41

There are plenty of mild Octobers in London, it’s not that uncommon to see early 20s.

liveforsummer · 30/09/2023 07:42

Tbh having an October birthday I remember the weather going back years as I was always very outdoorsy so parties etc reflected that. It's often warmer and more settled than September. I also remember sweating through tattie week picking potatoes and im in Scotland where you expect it to be cooler.

Syndulla · 30/09/2023 07:43

YANBU, but it's not just about a few temperature fluctuations.

Big chunks of polar ice caps are missing. They are not returning in the winter months.

New York is under water.

The UK's state of nature report came out the other day and was buried under the furore about the tree but its conclusions were shocking.

Unfortunately, as you are about to see in these comments, people are in denial about what we are facing.

Peacendkindness · 30/09/2023 07:44

summer is June, july, august we are just one month into autumn. - very normal.

Zampa · 30/09/2023 07:46

YANBU.

Weather related disasters worldwide but because they're not happening here, people can easily claim warm weather in October is 'normal'.

londonrach · 30/09/2023 07:46

It's always been like this in the UK. We never have a good summer but a good sept and Oct or it's good before the summer holidays...I remember as a child in the 80s it being vvvvv hot in Feb .

Cornettoninja · 30/09/2023 07:46

20’s in early October isn’t that uncommon though I wouldn’t class it as routine or rely on it.

My general rule of thumb is that the weather is usually pretty mild (and I’d book an outdoor focussed UK holiday for instance) up until bonfire night. Dd went camping - not with me because I hate camping - in the October half term a couple of years ago.

Coming out the other side of winter can be a bit more hit and miss but the end of February usually gives some nice spring like days with high teen temps here and there.

JKDcot · 30/09/2023 07:48

@Zampa totally agree. Worldwide weather events such as floods, fires, storms. But “it’s only a few degrees sunnier here and that’s no dramas”. That’s what it feels like

Pretty standard british weather if you ask me. Always crap July and August and then a lovely early autumn.

Well it is normal Hmm

It doesn’t automatically follow that means anyone is denying climate change.

Sups79 · 30/09/2023 07:50

This.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 30/09/2023 07:52

It’s between 14-16 degrees here next week; seems completely normal to me 🤷🏻‍♀️

It really isn't. The average high for temperature in October is 14 degrees.

OP Mumsnet is full of climate change deniers and the disinterested. Their children won’t thank them!
There are some awful people here - checkout the Things I won’t be giving up for Climate change thread - deeply depressing.

Warm weather in October is normal.

AND it's also true that climate change is bad and we need to do something to address it.

People saying that warm weather is normal are not saying that climate change isn't happening.

Fizbosshoes · 30/09/2023 07:56

I wouldn't dismiss it as usual or normal, sometimes we do get nice days in October but early-mid 20s is not usual. We did however get similar weather to that iirc 13 years ago as I remember taking my kids to the beach on 1st October.
But it is possible to be worried about climate change but also enjoy unseasonably nice weather. Especially after summer was so underwhelming.
