Meant to be 23/24 degrees in London next week? Not usual for early October… anyone else think it’s bonkers that climate change so obvious and still nothing being done my government and corporates

Ha ha, it's not cold in the SE. Really warm and muggy, about 23 degrees at the moment. Forecast to be 24 (feeling like 26!) at the weekend.

I'm envious. I went to the shops in a sleeveless vest and flipflops and everyone had on at least two layers more. A few people commented on my seeming optimism when getting dressed this morning 😂We're hoping for one last camping trip so watching closely and hoping for a little more mellow autumn weather 🙏

WhizzBox · 02/10/2023 18:26

I think we are experiencing a LOT more heavy rainfall than we used to.

CurlewKate · 02/10/2023 19:00

The weather is forecast to be 10 degrees higher than normal this coming week where I live. If that doesn't concern you, you have no idea what's going on.

Poodles23 · 02/10/2023 19:20

Agree 👍

You said it correctly - it is weather, not climate. Climate is what we measure over multidecadal timescales, not days!

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/10/2023 19:29

What are we to do about it OP? Please expand.

LindorDoubleChoc · 02/10/2023 19:30

Other than freaking out of course.

Yep. Check the data.

In the 80’s it was literally freezing in October, things have changed,it’s not normal

I think 'literally' freezing is a bit of hyperbole...but perhaps it depends where you were located in the 80s!

First frosts in East London since 1959

Although many parts of the UK have already recorded their first air frost this part of the capital, being so built up and close to the City, remains frost free. Although many may think that frosts …

I'm not sure it was. We had a static caravan in the 80s when I was a child. Caravan season ran to Halloween and we couldn't have used it if it was literally freezing.
I remember the sort of autumns like those on the Kipling advert that was on at the time. Lots of running through dappled sunlight and mellow fruitfulness.

RedPony1 · 03/10/2023 11:31

I can remember plenty of times where my horses were clipped and unrugged in October during the day over the last 20 years.

It's cold at night even if it isnt in the day

PinkRiceKrispies · 03/10/2023 11:48

26C predicted on Saturday. This is not normal. Neither are the mild overnight temperatures.

LuckySantangelo35 · 03/10/2023 12:49

It would be so good if it stayed like this all winter

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/10/2023 18:01

No it wouldn’t. The natural cycle would be completely messed up.

PinkRiceKrispies · 03/10/2023 18:12

No it wouldn't be a good thing at all.

Oioicaptain · 03/10/2023 21:46

It's not that unusual. My son's birthday is at the start of Oct. He's a teenager, but has had several really hot birthdays, mostly over 10 years ago. What concerns me more is the constant wind that we have experienced thus summer. It's been like no other summer that I have ever experienced.

You’ll have your wish within about 10 years - if not sooner.

And no - it’s not ‘good thing’.

Yes to the OP - I’m thinking the weather/climate is going to get a lot more interesting in the next decade. And not in a fun way.

The rate glaciers are melting worldwide you better hurry up to get that skiing holiday in!

greenbeansnspinach · 06/10/2023 13:57

You’re not being unreasonable to note it. I’m not freaking out though. I am trying to accept that life will imperceptibly and sometimes suddenly, nastily, get a lot tougher for all of us over the coming years. And that not only governments and big business, but perfectly normal nice people, are burying their heads and pretending it’s not happening.

I remember it being much colder round this time of year in the 80s too. September is basically another summer month now. October hasn't even felt autumnal yet. I'm still wearing summer dresses and sandals most days. We haven't even contemplated putting the heating on yet.

Sexnotgender · 06/10/2023 21:35

I remember many moons ago going for a night out on Halloween and it was distinctly warm. It ebbs and flows.

JellyfishandShells · 06/10/2023 21:41

I gave birth to my daughter in mid October in the early 90s and we had been having a heatwave. It broke with a big storm on that day - I had gone in to hospital wearing a light, floaty maternity dress and went home 2 days later in the most peculiar warmer outfit that my husband had picked out from my wardrobe, bearing no resemblance to what I had asked him to fetch !

It’s not rare at all to have a warm period in October, but the nights aren’t as sticky as summer as sunset is so much earlier.

PinkRiceKrispies · 06/10/2023 21:41

Temps still in the 20's here and too warm this evening and most evenings trying to sleep. Windows have been open still. Autumn will go so quickly this year. 😔
