Worrying affords the illusion that it's everyone else's fault. It absolves you if your own guilt.

DontGiveMeThatOldCrap · 30/09/2023 13:33

The weather fluctuates and always has done. I remember being told that when I started school, it was warm that September. I'm in my 60s

HelpMeGetThrough · 30/09/2023 13:38

I think I'll "freak out" because it won't be where I am, gutted!!

Could do with that temperature here and a bit warmer.

YANBU but can’t believe voting is at 50%.🙄 People are so worried about trees, but don’t care as long as it’s warm apparently. Greece has been burning, I think our children will see the impact of global warming.

The voting isn’t indicating climate change denial - it’s indicating people don’t see a slightly warmer than average and not record mid October day as a sign of it particularly.
Also it’s 17 in Cardiff, so it’s not widespread anyway.

@JKDcot

the temps are normal Op and it’s nice that it’s milder

And the fact it's normal for temperatures to be consistently warmer than they were 50 years ago, tells us what?

theduchessofspork · 30/09/2023 13:53

Climate change a massive worry but early October can be pretty warm, and we did have a bit of an Indian summer sept

The rain however is getting more extreme..

Ginmonkeyagain · 30/09/2023 13:58

I'm 45 and don't remember many snowy Decembers. There was a run of very cold winters in the mid eighties though - I have a picture of a very small me standing with my family in a snow covered field.

We had them again in the 2010s as we always go to a friends house in North London for a Christmas party in late December and there have been at least three times in the last decade where we have had to battle through snow to get there from South London.

Andnowtowhatcomesnext · 30/09/2023 13:59

OP you are right. It’s like we are being hit on the head by falling tiles as the roof caves in but we just go ‘ah it’s just one tile’.

It's not just up to government and corporates

No, but they will have a hell of a lot more impact than you and I pretending that separating our rubbish will singlehandedly save the planet.

Hush, stop talking sense. People want to panic at a warm day, rather than look at the complicated science and strain their brain
Climate change is real. Anecdote is not data. Both can be true.

MartyFunkhouser · 30/09/2023 14:09

My sister got married on October 8th, many years ago. I always remember the weather - it was sunny and warm enough for the guests to sit outside on the hotel terrace at the reception.

Not denying climate change. But sometimes October is warm and it’s not a new thing.

That temperatures are currently in the upward curve part of the interglacial cycle?

Butter fingers, sorry.

Sadly not, if interglacial cycles were the main factor the earth should be cooling not warming.

One hot day in one place in the UK might not be something to panic about but it’s still yet another example of what is happening all across the world. It will still impact on biodiversity and put things out of kilter. I’ll get out and thoroughly enjoy the sunshine but I’d be stupid not to worry about climate breakdown.

Yet people are just accepting it like it’s inevitable. We all should be taking action. In whatever way we can. It’s just pure madness to roll our eyes and bemoan the ‘eco zealots’ or ‘net zero zealots’. We should be out in the streets in response to the stupidity of the current government allowing new oil to be extracted - and NO it won’t effected our energy hills. And NO it won’t help our economy. The oil will be sold on the open Market. The profits will go to a Norwegian company. We the tax payer will subsidise it heavily. It will create a few local jobs at best but will contribute to further destabilising the climate and sends a dangerous message to the world.

Echobelly · 30/09/2023 14:16

I'm surprised at how many people are being blasé about this weather. Yes, maybe you get the odd mild low 20s day in October but 5 days in London of 24-27 is rather different. And yes it's nice in itself, but it's also not a good sign.

For example, at this rate I'm thinking of giving up on summer holidays in Southern Europe in July/August as the heat is getting consistently unbearable. Imagine what it must be like for people who live there!

UniversalAunt · 30/09/2023 14:37

Warm Octobers are not unusual.& the onset of seasonal leaf drop tantalises as the days may be balmy & warm but the rapidly shortening hours of daylight tip the balance.

In my adult years I have known settled snowfall in October in London, so there is distinct variation around the seasonal average.

JKDcot · 30/09/2023 16:21

@tpxqi what a kind comment. Hope you are nicer to others than you are on here

The last time I was in London in October there was a heavy frost, it was freezing!
23 degrees is insane!

Timeforchangeithink · 30/09/2023 17:37

13 and pissing down in Scotland- nae climate change here unless you count it not being windy........

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 01/10/2023 08:07

12 years ago we had a U.K. holiday end of September and first week in October. It was 35 degrees some days. So this week doesn’t seem like anything special tbh.

Cabdiraxman · 01/10/2023 08:14

October London 2008, it was 30 plus degrees for 3 days.

But it is inevitable. China has over 1000 coal powered power stations and are building more at a rate of knots. We wring our hand over using the 3 we have. As a country we could be completely carbon neutral and we'd still see climate change happening at a rate of knots.

China produces over 10 billion tonnes of CO2 a year, the UK is at around 300 million - not even in the top 10 of producers. China is not going to stop because the west says it's a problem, it is choosing to adapt to climate change rather than reduce green house gases.

You say others have a blasé attitude to the weather and that you are thinking of not jetting off to Southern Europe for your summer hols. But will you really?
