Meant to be 23/24 degrees in London next week? Not usual for early October… anyone else think it’s bonkers that climate change so obvious and still nothing being done my government and corporates

My birthday is in October and the weather is often pleasant. Sunny but cold enough at night that the the midgies have vanished.

Not a climate change denier but it’s been a pretty soggy summer up where we are. So I’d expect a bit of nicer weather in October to balance it out.

Autumnunmasks · 30/09/2023 09:23

I'm with you OP totally.

The irony of people on here saying that it was warm in London 10 years ago does my head in, they don't seem to understand that global warming didn't start up last August, it's been accelerating since the industrial revolution

It has. But taking an example of something that’s within normal limits and peoples lived experience does absolutely nothing but give those who do deny manmade influences on climate change ammunition for their arguments.

as I said before, there are plenty of examples and data sources to draw on to make the point.

If I was a suspicious person I’d be inclined to think that a denier/invested party would have more reason to make this particular argument than someone concerned about actual education.

Sensoria · 30/09/2023 10:39

September has always been warm, and you occasionally get nice days in October too. Hence why September is often prime time for weddings (weather is still sunny and warm and most people will have returned from summer holidays).

So I don’t think this is anything new and indicative of global warming.

The very hot summers we are now having, is, however, together with the more global climate issues. But bit odd to focus on September and October when it’s always been like this.

Knnniggets · 30/09/2023 10:43

The data really doesn’t lie: 2023 has been beating global average temperatures by a long shot and it’s not even over. We need a lot more resources thrown at this problem, sustained over many years for finding ways to mitigate it/adapt.

phoenixrosehere · 30/09/2023 10:56

September and October is usually mild here in SE England. November is where it usually changes but not by much. DH and I moved house at the end of November/early December, 5 years ago and even then it wasn’t cold. Some winters have been quite mild, last year had it moments with bits of snow and even some ice in December and January which made it difficult to walk to school but they didn’t last long.

My parents visit during October half terms and we’re usually all walking around in light jackets before taking them off and carrying them if that. Definitely agree that climate change is a problem, but the current weather is normal where I am.

TastyLikeARaindrop · 30/09/2023 11:01

I remember the hot Halloween a few years ago, wandering around doing trick or treat with the kids wearing a t shirt.
We've also had quite a few October half term holidays that have been warm enough to wander around with no coats and even sit on the beach comfortably.

Dramatic · 30/09/2023 11:06

I went to Edinburgh in October half term (so probably last week in October) in 2005 and it was over 20 degrees and everyone was walking round in t-shirts. It happens.

JimnJoyce · 30/09/2023 11:10

it's forecast to be 22 degrees here in the midlands next weekend

User174085934 · 30/09/2023 11:10

I'm not going to moan about it, no need for heating and washing will dry.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 30/09/2023 11:10

It's 15 degrees here today. Pretty average for this time of year tbh.

henrysugar12 · 30/09/2023 11:12

For years we've always gone away somewhere in the UK in late October as it was my mums birthday. The weather in October has always been great.

14 and raining here so nothing unusual.

My friend's birthday is the first week of October and it's very often sunny. I remember being away at a holiday cottage with him 15 years ago and it being better weather than we'd have for much of the summer. Climate change is happening and we should all be terrified, but a random week of sunshine isn't necessarily indicative that things have got worse in the past couple of years or whatever.

Sunshine, yes, but perhaps not such high temperatures?
I am very, very concerned about climate change, especially the fact it is happening much faster than predicted.

The day I moved into university halls, 1st October 2011, was an absolute scorcher

We went to the beach 2 Oct 2011 and swam in the sea as it was so hot! Fondly remember that weekend with DS.

shivermetimbers77 · 30/09/2023 11:47

Yes I am very worried about climate change and concerned about what the next 10-20 years will bring. We all need to be doing a lot more and it isn’t enough to wait for the government to do something because the government responds to voter pressure. They won’t do anything drastic unless there is clear public buy in.. and just look at all the hoo ha when they have tried to bring in changes such as ULEZ . People in general are happy to use a paper straw or recycle the odd cereal box, but give up their cars or air travel or pay more money for driving? No chance .

GasPanic · 30/09/2023 11:49

Threads like this are bonkers because they do nothing to help the important distinction between climate and weather.

It is like also pretending the climate has not varied massively in the past.

In December when we have a week of sub zero temperatures like last year it won't be correct to claim climate change isn't happening.

Tumbleweed101 · 30/09/2023 11:50

It always used to be freezing when I went trick or treating as a child in the 80's. October's have got warmer since then.

However the really cold weather generally kicks in after bonfire night.

kitsuneghost · 30/09/2023 11:56

I think seasons have shifted more than anything
But ingrained in hour heads when the should be by oldq books and pictures etc..
We seem to comment every year on snow late march and warm Octobers yet we never adjust the perceived memory.

Seems now
Jan to march is winter
April to June is spring
July to September is summer
October to December is autumn

So early october is the tail end of the new summer

balltraponthecote · 30/09/2023 12:01

I keep a diary and several times in the past decade, the beginning of October has been warm enough for a barbecue. So it's not that unusual.

Definitely. We hardly ever get snow in December now, it's usually February when it's bitterly cold. And I had my heating on until the beginning of May this year, April was cold!

Beezknees · 30/09/2023 12:13

5 or 6 years ago I remember it was 15 degrees on Christmas day.

Nannyfannybanny · 30/09/2023 12:15

The COP conferences like the one in Glasgow, all these people flying thousands of miles to get together,to talk about saving the world, what a joke! It could be done online.

PinkRiceKrispies · 30/09/2023 12:31

It's October tomorrow and earlier today, I was out in tshirt and flip flops. Definitely not normal.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 30/09/2023 12:47

I've gone back on old photos and I have pictures of my dd in shorts and t-shirt most octobers and we are northern. As long as ican remember snows have been mostly February with them possible anytime from late November to mid April (even remember the year it was may)

Yes the climate is changing, its really obvious around me because of the extremes but you can't judge it from 1 high temperature that isn't completely outside the realms of normal range

Justletpeopleenjoythings · 30/09/2023 12:49

Not sure what worrying about it will do to help.
