To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

At the moment I'm beginning to regard the Official Monster Raving Loony Party as the most sensible bunch out there.

Still, could be worse. A couple of nights ago, I was sharing a dorm with a group of Americans (that's not the bad bit). Had a bit of a rant about our clueless idiots and one of them said "yeah, we've got it bad too". I pointed out that their politicians were in a completely different league.

Yes it could be a lot worse! Two impeached presidents one with dementia is at least not a problem we are grappling with.

TooBigForMyBoots · 29/09/2023 13:42

Are they going to be replacing Sunak as leader before the GE or just after it?

WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps · 29/09/2023 13:42

Haven’t RTFT, but if anyone has said that 20mph zones, ULEZ-type schemes and LTNs aren’t designed principally as a backdoor tax by permit pricing and penalties, they are profoundly naive.

Perhaps we should be taxed more. But if so, let’s be honest and transparent about it.

I don’t believe for a moment that air quality or safety is behind any of this.

And anyone saying that any decent driver can stay at or below 20mph without constantly having to check the speedometer is either not a driver or is knowingly perpetuating a falsehood.

I am confused

What is the green deal then?

I’ve said it’s been laid out extensively. You could google a bit. The documents are quite long though and you’ve struggled to understand some quite short posts. Also, you’re going to come back asking for detail/costing/reassurance it’ll happen. To counteract that first - wait for the manifesto as far as the first two are concerned and ‘why ask when you never ask Tories?’ for the last (as well as the fact that since it has been costed, they’ve scaled it back a bit since the Tories have caused such a hole in public finances).
Here’s a bit of reading since you seem too lazy to actually look. Or listen to political broadcasting. Or read political press. All of which seem very odd from someone who feels they know it all about politics and the economy.
this one is actually called ‘The Green New Deal explained’ https://www.labourgnd.uk/gnd-explained
You could also look at:

I must say, it is genuinely interesting how some of our more midwitted contributors responded to not very controversial points about why and how the Tories are fucked. It was treated as a partisan point, and some of you thought you could make party political arguments against it because you would like it not to be true.

Hmm nice insulting there, but if you make claims about a recession people will ask about it. It’s no small deal to be in one

Any decent driver can learn to do this. At the moment we are fighting our experience which automatically has 30 as low speed default. A few months doing 20 every now and then will fix that. And constant checking won’t make a competent driver dangerous anyway. It’s an eye flick at a time there are no nearby hazards.

A 10-second search on Google and I found this: https://labour.org.uk/missions/

So

  1. Growing the economy - yep 👍 Rethinking the EU relationship would help with that

  2. Clean energy superpower - sounds great. I think Keir did expand on that and the plans were solid. More jobs, lower bills, better for environment, less reliance on warmongers for energy - excellent.

  3. NHS - if we lose this, it will be a disaster. NHS Dentistry has pretty much gone for large swathes of the country and I think the Tories have spent the last 13 years starving resources and leaving people with no choice but to pay out for quicker treatment. Basically testing our willingness to pay - wider healthcare will be next (already happening).

  4. Crime - a vote winner, but I'm not convinced by any party on this issue. But things are getting worse

  5. Schools and education - I trust labour on this over the Tories, any day of the week

Thank you posting that.

  1. so reopening the brexit deal and thus reopening the Brexit wars sounds a lot like reversing the leave vote. Do you seriously think Labour supporters that are also brexiteers or anyone for that matter would consider this a GOOD thing?? Another 5/10 years of brexit wars??

  2. Clean power. It’s meaningless. The windmills that never turn that belong to Dale Vince the just stop oil activist/ labour donor is a false promise. It’s lining his pockets for sure!

  3. Labour have certainly not promised to fund dentists! All parties are committed to the NHS.

  4. Labour have always been soft on crime. What do you think they intend to do?

  5. By charging private schools VAT the state system is going to overwhelmed for years by having to absorb thousands of extra pupils!

Thank you for posting but it’s lame and vague.

Winning is no guarantee they'll keep him. They got rid of the last few leaders despite them winning and being way more popular with the party members.

The country can't take any more Tory chaos.🤦‍♀️

They will 110% keep Rishi if he wins, it’s a major achievement and he seems to be a really decent man.

A "really decent man" wouldn't have randomly excluded 3 million people from covid support and then lied about it in Parliament!

If Labour want to rejoin or reallign with the EU then they should have bloody well said that when they had the chance, rather than Corbyn sitting on the fence and not committing Labour to either Brexit nor Remain. Labour blew any chance they had of being taken seriously with the EU situation when they wouldn't commit to either course of action.

he introduced policy after policy to line his wife, friends and families pocket.

You can't pay support to tens of millions of people and then glibly tell 3 million others to bugger off, and then lie about why! Where has the concept of fairness and parity disappeared to?

It's not reversing the Brexit deal. But anyone with half a brain knows now that Brexit hasn't gone very well. We were sold many lies. I guess that will be one of the Tory attack lines come the election - 'don't reopen Brexit - it's done'. It's not done, it's not working.

I hope that the same spirit of not accepting the status quo that produced Brexit, will produce a different Government this time.

I find it depressing that you can easily dismiss green power - because it might line someone's pockets! When all the money made from dirty gas goes to charity and back into society of course.

I don’t think we can do any negotiation with EU

It’s meant to just be a review not a re talk

They may have plans for countries to join the SM, not directed at us but available to us, but Starmer has repeatedly ruled out joining the SM

MintJulia · 29/09/2023 14:09

Rishi is in a better position than he was.

  • Inflation has slowed and they've held interest rates
  • GDP is up
  • Keir Starmer has changed his mind publicly on a few things

But I'm really not sure about RS's gamble on green issues. I think it may come back to bite him. Certainly I have less respect for him. He needed to stand firm.

Exactly labour have straddled the EU fence all along and NOW they are going to restart it all?? Now, after staying silent for several years they intend to unravel it all? And for what purpose unless we are going to wholesale rejoin? And all that entails - taking the Euro, FOM again.

That is why I agree and believe Labour are trying to lose. They are doing everything possible to lose.

In what direct way has brexit affected your life? Why isn’t it working? It’s literally made no difference to 95% of people living in the U.K.

Alexandra2001 · 29/09/2023 14:12

Sunak wont get any pro motorist laws through Parliament...not enough to make any difference.

Should also be remembered that motorists also live in streets and villages plagued by... speeding drivers!!!

France manages perfectly well with an even lower urban limit..... 30kph (18.6mph)

The only suggestion i agree with is parking fines but he wont get any new law on that through before the next GE, all hot.

Only an invasion of the Falklands will save the Tories, people are tired of them.

And this is why we are fucked. No one's allowed to change their mind based on new evidence any longer, are they? No take backs, no re-evaluations. Just blindly following the same path no matter what.

Or do you reserve that only for labour politicians? Boris for example was allowed to be both formerly pro-EU to leader of the leave movement.

Both main parties were (and still are) split on Brexit; it's not an issue which is uniquely divisive to Labour, and it is highly dishonest to suggest otherwise.
