To think this, is how the Tories could win?

Sunak is setting out his stall as pro-car:

www.theguardian.com/politics/2023/sep/28/rishi-sunak-expected-to-limit-powers-of-councils-in-england-to-curb-car-use-20mph-speed-limit-traffic-camera-fines

This could actually swing it for him. People sink vast amounts of time and money into their cars, they're aspirational status symbols. The UK loves it's cars.

In what direct way has brexit affected your life? Why isn’t it working? It’s literally made no difference to 95% of people living in the U.K.

Loss of EU staff in NHS and social care, its dramatic, not only did staff leave, they don't come here anymore... so we know take AHP from developing countries, to their loss, we gain people with questionable language and nursing skills (we ve lowered both) plus their very large families, hence immigration is so high.

That affects us all.

And this is why we are fucked. No one's allowed to change their mind based on new evidence any longer, are they? No take backs, no re-evaluations. Just blindly following the same path no matter what.

Or do you reserve that only for labour politicians? Boris for example was allowed to be both formerly pro-EU to leader of the leave movement.

They don’t even have the path Mum!
It’s not even in existence to back track from. You didn’t answer my question.

Anyone working for the NHS from the EU can easily and effortlessly apply and can stay if they wish.

This is what happens when you let leftie ideology rule everything you do. ULEZ extension is all about taxing people to pay for the mistakes of a useless mayor. Low traffic neighbourhoods do not take in account the real lives of people. 20 mph is all about Mickey Mouse politicians trying to show they are re arranging the deckchairs. While the NHS sinks in Wales and Scotland, even more so than England.

If the left think they can let ideology drive policy, then the right will outplay them everytime.

and in the meantime, real issues don’t get dealt with.

If you think Brexit hasn't affected your life, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Yes, I'm aware - COVID lockdowns and the Russian war have impacted costs across the board. But those three together have made it harder for UK families.

Brexit has made no difference to anyone. The war and pandemic have affected everyone obviously!

Do you think Corbynomics are still at play here? Politically?

That’s Starmer’s decision though

Whatever the polls say on Brexit both parties are still aware
of those voters and make statements along those lines

Nonsense, new workers from the EU just don't come here, visas, health insurance, min bank balance... workers left.

Personally Brexit has had a huge affect on me and my finances, its also one reason we have higher inflation and interest rates.

You re a Brexitier, i wouldn't expect you to consider anyone but yourself.

Lastchancechica · 29/09/2023 14:25

Given the total lack of policies or vision coming from Labour it’s amazing how many uturns they have managed to achieve already.

There isn't a total lack of policies or vision though. You're talking arse, like you were about the 30kmh speed limit in Paris.

They will 110% keep Rishi if he wins, it’s a major achievement and he seems to be a really decent man.

He is a useless PM leading a zombie government. You may think he's a decent man, but most members think he's a disloyal snake and rejected him as leader. And his party colleagues are already preparing for a new leadership race.

High inflation has nothing to do with brexit and everything to do with the Western world printing money for as long as they l have! How can you explain why Germany have high inflation AND are in recession??

Stop posting lies and inaccurate information.

Any decent driver can learn to do this. At the moment we are fighting our experience which automatically has 30 as low speed default. A few months doing 20 every now and then will fix that. And constant checking won’t make a competent driver dangerous anyway. It’s an eye flick at a time there are no nearby hazards.

Sorry, that’s just not true. The physical reality of keeping within lower speed limits is that it is much more difficult than at higher speeds. Quite apart from the less controllable engine response - pressing the accelerator will have a greater relative effect at 18mph than 30mph - inclines, overtaking, and other traffic matter much more to relative speed at lower speeds.

😂 it must be for a very limited part of Paris! We didn’t see it. Frances roads are super fast, not super slow!

Yep, Car gear boxes are set to run at 30, not 20. At around 20, you're constantly changing between 2nd and 3rd gear.

And all these cars travelling slowly will cause more congestion, congestion causes accidents. It's basic maths/physics. If a car drives more slowly, it's on the road for a longer period of time. More cars on the road at the same time leads to congestion. It's exactly what happened in our village. Main road through it used to be 50, then lowered to 40, now lowered to 30. When it was higher, there were natural gaps in traffic where people could cross, cars could pull out of side streets etc. Now it's 30, it's virtually a constant flow of slow traffic, no gaps, and the number of minor collisions from cars trying to get out of side roads has massively increased, simply because there are no longer the gaps for them to pull out.

Yes, fully support 20mph very close to schools, i.e. outside school gates, etc., in fact, I'd probably go to 10mph at starting/finishing times on roads immediately around the gates. But certainly not on roads a long way from schools. We need very local/short limits, not wide reaching limits covering entire neighbourhoods.

Only my opinion but the Conservatives ammunition is;
Gender wars
Immigration
ULEZ
' good with the economy'
It is depressing, but there you are

Startingagainandagain · 29/09/2023 14:52

The only way the Tories would win another general election is if they managed to forcefully lobotomise the entire population beforehand....

They are finished.

Absolute bollocks - they don't change the ratios for each country, several in europe have a lowest limit of 30 kph (see link I posted above), no car gearbox is "set to run at 30 (mph)". Driving at 20 is a piece of piss for anyone half way competent.

Brexit made trading with the uk's biggest trading partner more expensive, shrunk GDP by about 4% and hit the value of the pound significantly resulting in imports costing more.

All of which result in things becoming more expensive than they were before. Now, what do we call that?

Gaslighting on an industrial scale:

"Look, it’s not alone – a Labour mayor in London imposing the Ulez charge, £12.50 on ordinary families when they’re just trying to get their kids to school, take them to football practice, go weekly shopping or, you know, get to work." - Sunak this morning

ULEZ was indeed introduced by the Mayor of London - a certain Boris Johnson, who if I remember correctly was the Conservative mayor.

The extension of ULEZ was the idea of Grant Shapps - he insisted on this as a condition of providing assistance to TfL after the Covid lockdown caused a budget deficit (far fewer passengers meant far lower revenue from bus and train fares).

The £12.50 ULEZ charge is only payable by car drivers whose cars do not meet the pollution standards. The vast majority of "ordinary people" with reasonably new cars (less than 8-10 years old) will not pay a penny - and there is £160 million available in the scrappage scheme to assist drivers who want to scrap a non-compliant car.

Sunak and the right-wing press are quite happy to paint the false picture of everyone being hit by ULEZ, just as they are happy to present the 20 mph speed limit as something that will cause traffic to grind to a halt. In much of London, being able to travel at 20 mph would be a vast improvement - traffic in central London frequently crawls along far slower than this.
