Why does a bad meal out turn me in to a d**k?!

We went out for lunch with the children and it was husband's secret choice. He's a big meat eater and I'm not and I have an ED so it's always tricky anyway. As always I had a minor nervous breakdown actually deciding what I wanted as I weigh up price/calories/likelihood of vegetables etc etc and decided on a 'red pepper and harissa chicken burger'. with a baked potato rather than fries. Menu said it came with tomato, lettuce and fried red onions. It did not. I asked where they were and the waitress traipsed back from kitchen saying that it had changed since the menu was written to which I said 'you can't do that!'. The children shared a big old beef burger which had cheese in, pickles, burnt ends and whatnot and was only £1 more than my disappointing affair.
I went and spoke to the chap in charge and said how utterly shite it was and got something taken off the bill. He also told me that it was the 'beef burgers' that came with the salad items and not the chicken burger. How silly I thought!

I did this away from the table to try and not be a dick in front of family but it pretty much ruined the steak experience for my husband and he's said we aren't going out for dinner again because this happens a lot.
I'm cross with myself because I spoiled his day.
However, I absolutely cannot stand crap food when paying a small fortune for it. I just can't suck it up like he seems to be able to.
Talk me down- I can't stop beating myself up about this. How dare I behave like this?? How should I have dealt with my rubbish meal?

Separate question. Did your burger come with fries? Because reading again, no lettuce also implies no fries. But in that case the pricing seems off.

heyathere · 26/09/2023 12:39

@StrawberrySquash it's in the OP. She asked for a baked potato instead of fries

Second line says “ our burgers” not “ beef burgers” and doesn’t state excluding chicken or “ beef” only. So restaurant in the wrong as for your meltdown, without being there it’s hard to judge if you went nuclear on them or were restrained. Yes it can be embarrassing sometimes when folk complain but I think as a nation we don’t complain enough for rubbish goods and service. Does your husband not care if you don’t enjoy your meal, so long as he’s ok?

Yes but did you miss the unless stated otherwise bit?

Note that all the other burger listing mention a burger patty cheese and maybe another topping or sauce. The chicken burger lists feta, red onion and rocket, of course the burger does not come with "feta, red onion and rocket plus lettuce tomato and fried red onions". It falls into the unless stated otherwise bit.

And I think telling a restaurant that something is "utter shite" is unnecessarily abusive and aggressive.

Completely agree. Also it sounds like OP eats out regularly so should be aware of the way menus read.

YABU for the phrase 'steak experience!'

DaNcInGtEqUiLaCaT · 30/09/2023 08:09

The only time I complain is when they put meat in my vegetarian meal. Other wise I eat the bits I like and leave the bits I don't.
I wouldn't care about the lack of salad as it's probably the cheapest salad going.
Perhaps choosing meals from a "meal deal" fridge where you can see the food in advance, and having a car picnic sat in a place with a lovely view might be nicer?

@JuliusWho Well... 1180 calories is pretty much MY daily intake of calories. It's based on what my Fitbit says I burn each day so actually if I'm trying to lose weight I usually need to only eat 1000 calories to lose weight at about a lb a week. Some people are just small. If you're factoring in an ED as well, that's a huge number of calories to be faced with from one plate. The chicken burger was about the only option which is why OP chose it. But it's also still pretty high in calories.

Regularly eating as little as 1,000 calories a day is dangerous and unhealthy. 750 calories is not a high calorie meal, particularly if it’s your main meal of the day.

MistyBay · 01/10/2023 08:31

I was forced to go out last night. £15 for a bit of chicken on some potatoes in a portion smaller than I’d give to a seven year old. And not hot enough.

pollymere · 01/10/2023 16:45

@JuliusWho Unless you actually a medical professional, please don't tell me how many calories I should or shouldn't eat for my metabolism.

That menu absolutely does not say that the chicken burger comes with lettuce, tomato and red onion. It very clearly states that the chicken burger comes with feta, red onions and rocket.

You went and said that was “utter shite” that seems quite a strong reaction and considering what your husband said about this happening a lot, I rather suspect that it is you that needs to moderate your behaviour when you are out.

lol. It says exactly that.
