Takeaways - cost

How much is too much, in your opinion, for a takeaway for a family of 4?

For context we do not go out to eat aside from once in a blue moon and this is a 1 takeaway per week scenario.

Flavabobble · 22/09/2023 15:12

£200

owwwfoot · 22/09/2023 15:12

Depends if the kids are toddlers, teenagers or adults.

£50-60 if the former, £80-100 if latter

CapturedLeprechaun · 22/09/2023 15:15

For something like Indian/Chinese, it's easily £20 a head for a takeaway (main each, a couple of rices and naans to share) possibly £25 if you were all getting starters or sides too. I can see how it could easily be £100 for a decent takeaway for a family of 4, but this would be like a special "treat" takeaway I reckon.

For us, we would aim for something cheaper like fish & chips, where we can share two large fish and two chips, and it's more like £30/£40.

littlemousebigcheese · 22/09/2023 15:15

Takeaways are so expensive now!
We wanted to get domino's the other day and cheapest deal to get two large pizzas, two sides and some cookies was £50. That seems outrageous to me somehow?!
Chinese is usually about £40 for DH and me. Dishes are about £8 each now. DC don't eat much as still young so we'd do that or an Indian after they are asleep!

I wouldn't pay more than £50 as then you're verging on same price, maybe cheaper to eat in local pub

Soontobe60 · 22/09/2023 15:16

Blimey - £200!!! Where re you getting your take aways from?

If we get an Indian takeaway for 2 of us, we spend about £30. DH is veggie so has 3 sides, I get a meat curry and we share rice plus poppadoms and chutneys.
There’s usually a decent amount and I always have enough leftovers for the next day.

Motomum23 · 22/09/2023 15:16

Wow really?!? My family of 6 (3 adult sized portions and 3 older child) Chinese costs £42 and that's gone up by about £10 in the last year. Pizza hut etc is waaay too expensive for something that tastes worse than a Chicago town £5 frozen pizza.

Bellaboo01 · 22/09/2023 15:20

£30 - £40 (Two adults and two kids). We don't eat loads so for example a
Curry - 2 main dishes, 1 side, 1 rice, 2 naan and 2 popadums = £30/£40
Fish & Chips - 2 large fish, 1 large chips and 1 mushey peas = £20.00

Soubriquet · 22/09/2023 15:32

Flavabobble · 22/09/2023 15:12

£200

Are you fucking kidding me?!!

The most I’ve spent on a takeaway is £50 but that’s with 5 people. I usually average around £20

FattyFingers · 22/09/2023 15:36

We (2 adults, 3 teens) spend between £30 and £50. The £50 one is fancier and we only have it occasionally.

CinemaCrazy · 22/09/2023 15:37

£60 is my family’s limit, we are a family of four adults and probably have an Indian or Chinese takeaway about 4 to 5 times per year.
We have cheaper takeaways such as kebab, pizza, chicken and chips nearly every week and they cost about £35.

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2023 15:39

Surely it's more about what you can afford and consider value for money?

If you're rolling in it, you'd probably think nothing of having £50 a head sashimi Deliveroo'd to your door, but if you're struggling to pay for essentials, a fiver for a shared sausage and chips from the local chippy is probably a bit much on a weekly basis.

I'm somewhere in the middle and only get takeaway if it's something I can't replicate easily and cheaper myself, either home made, or from a supermarket.

So I wouldn't be paying £10-15 for a delivered pizza, because they're no nicer than something like a Crosta and Mollica frozen one that costs about £4 each from Costco.

But I can't usually make Chinese or Indian that tastes the same as a takeaway, and it can be time consuming, so we usually buy that in, but generally collect rather than order via an app, and often use microwave rice, rather than pay £4 a tub for them to make it.

RigorMortisRadio · 22/09/2023 15:40

Family of 4 adults here and I wince a bit once we hit £45/50.

Ohdearwhatnow4 · 22/09/2023 15:40

4 adults £50+ on a basic takeaway £70+ on bit more variety.

cuddlebear · 22/09/2023 15:40

About £70, assuming the kids aren’t little. I am in SE outside London.

CinemaCrazy · 22/09/2023 15:41

That is very similar to us.

Bagpuss2022 · 22/09/2023 15:46

We have a takeaway religiously every Saturday that we don’t go out. Chinese average £55 that’s 3 adults one just teen but she has a main. Indian is £40 but just me and DH have that as the kids don’t like it and a kebab type is usually £30 for the 4 of us

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/09/2023 15:47

I’d say £15 -£20 pp is how it now works out
so expensive

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 22/09/2023 15:48

Also you’d prob be better off going out once a month than a takeaway every week

Mummypete · 22/09/2023 15:49

We just can’t justify it anymore and it’s not about not being able to afford it as we have plenty of disposable income but I just find a takeaway so expensive and always slightly disappointing. We had fish & chips a few weeks back on DH’s birthday and all we had was cod and chips for 2 adults and a child and it came to £30!
Our new go to on a Friday night is homemade pizzas. I knock up the dough at lunchtime so it’s got time to rise and then it’s a pretty quick dinner. Costs max £5 for 3 of us and still feels like a treat.

TheWhalrus · 22/09/2023 16:01

We're in Berlin. For us takeaway pizza is about €10 per head, or if we want Turkish food (typically halloumi or fallafel in a wrap) that's about €7 per adult-sized portion. Sometimes we have takeaway Vietnamese curry. Thats about €8 each for an adult-sized serving of curry plus rice, perhaps a bit more if we also have side dishes.

MrsMiddleMother · 22/09/2023 16:02

Family of 5, £40-£60 depending on what we have

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 22/09/2023 16:06

For DH and me, about £20 for Chinese/Indian, a bit more if pizza.

Ponoka7 · 22/09/2023 16:07

Around £60, we can get good Indian or Mexican for that, sometimes there's enough for one person's lunch the next day. Sometimes I calculate the cost and decide against it.

Gerrataere · 22/09/2023 16:07

My kids aren’t into takeaway that isn’t McDonald’s. If and when I order that in it’s about £20. I usually order myself a curry on a Saturday and that’s £20 just for me. It wasn’t much more when I ordered with my ex, it was usually only an extra bread or poppadoms. The tax on delivery is mad though, I went out to my local Indian recently and even with taxis thrown in, it worked out cheaper per person. But obviously drivers need to be paid for my general laziness 🤣

My daughter would eat Chinese till it comes out of her ears. She even finishes what I’ve left even when she’s full Grin
