Takeaways - cost

How much is too much, in your opinion, for a takeaway for a family of 4?

For context we do not go out to eat aside from once in a blue moon and this is a 1 takeaway per week scenario.

My daughter would eat Chinese till it comes out of her ears. She even finishes what I’ve left even when she’s full Grin

Oh my eldest tried to nick my madras sauce whenever he could 🤣. But he’s got food issues and can’t have sauce touching anything else on the plate, so a curry is generally out of the question. And they prefer Iceland cheapo pizza to dominoes (I’m not complaining!)

XiCi · 22/09/2023 16:13

It's about £35 now for me DH and dd (13). Prices have gone up so much now. We used to get them a few times a month but now hardly ever. I can see many takeaway businesses going under tbh

Fupoffyagrasshole · 22/09/2023 16:13

we realised we'd been spending 300 - £350 a month on takeaways this past year (eeeeeep) it wasn't until our mortgage shot up by close to £300 a month we did a proper cash flow and saw how much we were spending - that money now goes on the mortgage and we haven't had a takeaway for about 3 months now! it's not worth the money I don't think - we were just being lazy and didn't want to cook

Soubriquet · 22/09/2023 15:32

Are you fucking kidding me?!!

The most I’ve spent on a takeaway is £50 but that’s with 5 people. I usually average around £20

What do you order for £20?

OnAFrolicOfMyOwn · 22/09/2023 16:17

£20 round our way will get the 'set meal for two' - 2 x starters, 2 x mains, 2 x sides.

DominoRules · 22/09/2023 16:21

We’ve mostly stopped having takeaways as it’s just so expensive, I can’t bring myself to pay it!

Not a huge amount of choice for us but the last Thai we had for 4 (2 adults, 2 teens) was £90

Wexone · 22/09/2023 16:23

We are not big eaters and there is just two of us. I find portions in takeaways especially Chinese so big . So we will get one sweet and sour between us and maybe a portion of spring rolls or something on top so Chinese is 25e for us, chippers is about 15e again because we get a large chip between us, Pizza is about 20e or 25e aswell so to me its not too bad cost wise and worth is for a treat and one night free of cooking a dinner

amechange · 22/09/2023 16:23

you can probably get fish and chips for less than a tenner per person so no more than £40

Furryrug · 22/09/2023 16:25

I ordered pie and chips recently and it cost me £12.95 , so a family of 4 £50 probably more.

mrsm43s · 22/09/2023 16:26

We're a family of 2 adults, 2 older teens, (so basically 4 adults).

Ideally I'd like to spend £50 or under, but in reality it's more like £60-80 for anything good (Indian/chinese/thai/japanese) Could probably keep it to under £50 for chain beige stuff like pizza/McDs/KFC etc.

Not round our way, you can't. The fish alone would be more than £10 per person, before you've added chips/sauces/pickles/drinks etc

RandomButtons · 22/09/2023 16:29

We spend £40 for more than we can eat, £30 for sensible between the two of us Chinese/curry.

fish and chips £30 for 4 of us.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 22/09/2023 16:31

I spent £49 on a Chinese for 5, all ages 15+ so no little kids who don’t eat much, of us a couple of weeks ago and thought that was extravagant. There was loads and some left over for the next day. Where do people live that takeaways are £100 for 4??!!

RedTedBoom · 22/09/2023 16:32

Wow £20 that would be £40 where I Iive
We have to order separately for my son as he has Arfid & Autism.
We order a Meal for 2 for the £40 but then get an extra starter, this means that there is a main left over for the next day

Mouldyfoodhelp · 22/09/2023 16:33

Family of four adults:

Fish and chips £32 for 4 small fish and XL chips

Kebab £30ish for 4 small kebabs

Chicken and chips -.£35 for 4x3 chicken pieces and chips and a drink KFC would be more due to sides.

Chinese £40-50 for chow mein, special fried rice. Chicken balls, prawn balls, pancake roll, chicken and mushroom, pineapple chicken and another main

Ribs: £74 which is insane to me

CherryCokeFanatic · 22/09/2023 16:35

McDonalds about 12.50 a person once you factor in the cost of going large, upgrading to milkshake, throwing a McFlurry on top that people often do. Even more if you’re the type who likes a second burger or some nuggets on the side.

GasPanic · 22/09/2023 16:37

Had mini cod and chips the other night for £8.

That is a decent meal for 1. Full cod and chips I dunno how much, but that would feed 2. Midlands.

Soubriquet · 22/09/2023 16:37

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/09/2023 16:16

What do you order for £20?

Let’s see

Only 3 of us ate last time and my last order was

2piece chicken and chips £4.80
children’s cheeseburger with chips and drink £5.50
children’s hamburger with chips and drink £5.50

delivery fee £2.50

came to £18.85

ichundich · 22/09/2023 16:38

About £40-60, but kids are still small. Domino's is much cheaper early / mid-week than from Thu onwards.

Wow! Fish and chips for 2 was £32 last time , I nearly fainted.

stayathomer · 22/09/2023 16:39

In Ireland and converting it it looks like about 35 pound, 2 adults, 2 teens, 2 children and generally chipper, chipper adds a bit more. Very rare now as someone said because we make Jamie Oliver pizzas and they’re as popular but of course if everyone is in a takeaway mood we’ll do it. Kind of wince as you hand over the money though when you think how much it would get you in a shop!!

Badleg89 · 22/09/2023 16:40

I wouldn't want to spend more than £40 tbh, our children are both under 10 though. I think people massively over order and over eat when they have Chinese.

We get an Indian more often for the 4 of us which comes to £37

Pumpkinpie1 · 22/09/2023 16:40

Wow . People have money to burn .
We don’t get takeaways . But on holiday this year we did buy fish and chips 2 portions one day which we shared. All the rest of the time we cooked our own meals - much cheaper

stayathomer · 22/09/2023 16:40

Sorry I meant Chinese and it costs a bit more!

coxesorangepippin · 22/09/2023 16:41

£12.50 for pie and chips????
