Takeaways - cost

How much is too much, in your opinion, for a takeaway for a family of 4?

For context we do not go out to eat aside from once in a blue moon and this is a 1 takeaway per week scenario.

We just had pizza yesterday. It’s €14.50 per pizza. We had two pizzas between 2 adults and 1 child. = €29
Usually we make pizza at home from scratch 99% of the time though

Yes we have a pizza oven so normally make pizzas from scratch. They’re nicer too imo

Oblomov23 · 22/09/2023 17:24

£80 for the 4 of us, poppadums, main, etc.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 22/09/2023 17:25

30

Increasingly I am quite picky about takeaways.

I don't like Chinese food.

I can cook better Indian food than the greasy over sweet places that seem to be everywhere (and are almost always actually Bangladeshi).

I can cook middle Eastern food well but I like having the variety you can get from a good takeaway - usually about £50 for two and then have some leftovers

Or sushi - which usually works out to about £30-40 for two

happyasaseagullstealingchips · 22/09/2023 17:26

3 Adults

Chinese £33.60
Pizza/Burger £38.90
Chippy £28.75

Not many different types in our area and only one of each. I much prefer cooking but can't stand very long at the moment so it's mainly beige and takeaway once a week.

Caspianberg · 22/09/2023 17:27

@Orangeji - yes same, ours are good. Yesterday was a case of unexpected long day out, late arrival home, grab food fast. It’s a local family pizzeria rather than chain so it’s pretty good and I think fairly good value for occasionally

shams05 · 22/09/2023 17:34

We normally get the 3 pizza deal which comes with two large fries and drinks for £21 plus two large burger meals. Total comes to £33.
Our 'normally' is around once a month, sometimes once in around 6 weeks.
If it's fish and chips then 2 large fish n chips, 2 kebab rolls and 4 cans of drink plus two kiddies drinks total £23.
There's 7 of us, 3 adults, two teens and two under 8.

Yellowflower47 · 22/09/2023 17:35

Depends on what takeaway surely? In my area, Indian is by far the most expensive followed by chinese, then kebab shop then chippy tea. For two adults and two children I’d say an average of £40 but probably not more than £60. At that price you could just go out to eat, albeit somewhere cheaper.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 22/09/2023 17:37

Last on we got came to £33 for 3 adults.

That was for a mixed meat satay, chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce, a chicken chow mein, fried rice, chips and spare ribs.

Chinese is definitely the cheapest option.

Doggymummar · 22/09/2023 17:37

We had fish n chips last month and it was over 30.00 for two of us. Fnc twice mushy peas curry sauce. Thought it was expensive. Chinese or Indian probably £40 quid burgers and chips £30. Oh had KFC last night 22.00 just for him

anniegun · 22/09/2023 17:39

£25/£30 per head would probably be the most we would pay

Zebedee55 · 22/09/2023 17:39

Oooof, just ordered a KFC for here. £30 for a bargain bucket, some fries, and gravy, plus delivery.😳

Won't be doing it regularly, although it was very nice. 😗

MrHopsPortal · 22/09/2023 17:41

I've been mostly disappointed with takeaways for the price recently - the only reliable one locally is our kebab place.

But we had the most amazing Thai last night - £42.74 for 2 adults and one child who eats like an adult. That was with some Deliveroo deal and DH removed the spring rolls before he ordered as they were £8 on their own and £50 was mentally too much for him.

Janieforever · 22/09/2023 17:42

In the south east here, for Chinese/indian, it’s about 17 pound for a main ie meal and rice. Then depends if you want things like naans, poppadoms, sides etc, but for 4 it would be min of 80 quid.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 22/09/2023 17:43

I live in a small town with only one good take away which does really amazing pizza, 2 pizzas and a side is usually about £20, get it 4/5 times a year? the rest are bad Chinese/greasy kebab type places. No idea how much they cost as I don’t eat stuff like that

jenkel · 22/09/2023 17:45

An Indian for us is probably our most expensive takeaway, for 4 adults it’s about £35, we share 2 rice, 1 veggie side, 1 veggie main, 1 or 2 meat mains, poppadoms are free and normally get 3 or 4 naan breads,

FrenchandSaunders · 22/09/2023 17:45

I ordered from a new fancy Indian near us the other day. Really fab quality … it was £64 for four adults which I thought was a lot but it was worth it. We had loads and there was enough for a large lunch for me the next day.

Compared to a cheaper Indian recently, which cost us £40 and wasn’t great. Would rather pay a bit more.

Janieforever · 22/09/2023 17:49

TinglingTangling · 22/09/2023 17:05

That’s not a meal for 4 though 😂 that’s enough to feed 8 😂

Huh? It’s one extra main with some sides of prawn toast and crackers, it’s a meal for 4 or 5.

GeneralLevy · 22/09/2023 17:52

My local Indian feeds us well (2a, 3c) for about £26!!! Maybe they are even better than I thought

mrsbyers · 22/09/2023 17:52

£40 if the kids are small , our budget as two adults is usually around £25

SisterAgatha · 22/09/2023 17:53

We get takeaway a lot. Love zone 6 London.
3 adults portions, 2 kids.

Pizza £20
chinese £40
curry £40
turkish £50
thai £70
kfc £30

SisterAgatha · 22/09/2023 17:55

A tip for pizza is phone up or collect. They’ll do a deal.

Yes - especially if doing a big order for a party. I once had to order about 30 pizzas for a work thing and they knocked over 1/3 off the official price.

worriedandworries · 22/09/2023 17:59

I don't get how you all spend so much, my DH and I are big eaters but we rarely spend over £30.
Our indian order is a 'starter' each, then a shared main, rice, naan and a handful of poppadoms.

HermioneKipper · 22/09/2023 18:00

It’s gotten so expensive to have a takeaway we just don’t do it anymore.

It’s just 2 adults here as kids too young and we got an Indian recently for a treat and it was £40! This was a starter to share, 2 mains, a side, 1 rice, and 1 naan. For my birthday a while back we got a Turkish which was almost £60. So we’ve decided it’s not worth it.
