Takeaways - cost

How much is too much, in your opinion, for a takeaway for a family of 4?

For context we do not go out to eat aside from once in a blue moon and this is a 1 takeaway per week scenario.

We don't have kids, it's just me and DP, but our usual order from our favourite Turkish restaurant comes to about £45. It's a mixed grill/kebab platter for two that comes with flatbreads, rice and salad and then we get a couple of starters to go with it. I guess if we had two kids it would cost us another £20-30 on top of that, depending on how old they were? Our favourite curry house is probably about the same.

maddiemookins16mum · 22/09/2023 16:48

Our Chinese does a set meal for 2 including 3 main dishes and a rice. We always get an extra rice and it feeds 3 perfectly well for £24.00. The set meal for 3, which is £32, feeds four of us. So, I’d balk at paying anything much over £40.00 for a takeaway for four. Even 2 of the largest Dominoes Pizzas plus a few sides is under £40.00.

YouJustDoYou · 22/09/2023 16:51

Pre-covid DH and I would spend about £25-35 on a takeout for ourselves. Now, when a chicken korma used to be £6 and is now £10 for same amount, it's been a vry, very long time since we could get a takeaway.

margotrose · 22/09/2023 16:52

Depends what you're ordering.

Two adults here and we pay around £16 for a chippy tea, or £23 for a Chinese (which lasts us 2-3 meals).

Burger/pizza/kebab type thing is about £16 for two.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 22/09/2023 16:56

2 Dominos and sides for £50? That's not a deal, that's full price! It's £9.99 for a large collected here, £12.99 delivered.

An Indian for 2 (mains, a shared rice, shared side) is about £30 here so I'd say maybe £60 for 4 is what I'd spend.

CinemaCrazy · 22/09/2023 16:57

Not where I live.

BloodandGlitter · 22/09/2023 16:59

Pie chips and a sauce round here is about £6! I wince if I'm paying more than £20 for a chippy for 4 people. £35 for a Chinese for 3.

Well they're £19 each full price in Bath, which isn't a cheap area, so I dread to think how much that deal supposedly saves you where you live.

CrazyHamsterLady · 22/09/2023 17:03

Our local Chinese takeaway would cost about £85 for 4 adults. That’s about 5 mains, 2 rices, 2 x noodles, 2 x prawn toast, 1 x prawn crackers. There’s always enough for the next night’s dinner though.

I live in bath also and it’s £9.99 for a large 2 topping pizza (collection only).
medium is £7.99 and small is £6.99

That’s not a meal for 4 though 😂 that’s enough to feed 8 😂

A large is £23.99 where I live, it’s crazy!

In fact this is our order for later when DH and DS get back from A&E tonight. The large chips will easily feed 3 of us and 2 of us are very fat. Grin

Chinese for 4 tends to cost about £70 but there's enough for 2-3 to get a leftovers meal out of it too

Henryhover · 22/09/2023 17:09

Me and my DH spend £20 on a take away for just us

littleripper · 22/09/2023 17:09

8 of us went to our local Thai last week, 3 courses, pre dinner cocktails, 2 bottles of wine, 3 pints - that was less than £200!!

Decafflatteplease · 22/09/2023 17:11

We used to get a weekly takeaway and for 6 of us it was between £28-34. DH and I share though!

We only get it once a month now due to COL!

CherryCokeFanatic · 22/09/2023 16:35

McDonalds about 12.50 a person once you factor in the cost of going large, upgrading to milkshake, throwing a McFlurry on top that people often do. Even more if you’re the type who likes a second burger or some nuggets on the side.

Yeah McDonald's has really shot up in price!

Orangeji · 22/09/2023 17:11

It depends on finances surely. For us right now max I’d want to spend is £20/£25. We’re a family of five so if we do get takeaway it’ll be just for me and dh once the kids are in bed!

Xqyz · 22/09/2023 17:12

We've ordered a takeaway tonight for collection from an Italian restaurant for 3 adults, 2 teens and a primary aged kid. It comes to £65. Admittedly the adults aren't massive eaters.

Usually we'd spend 25 quid on an Indian or Chinese. Domino's I'd get a deal for about the same price.

Caspianberg · 22/09/2023 17:15

We just had pizza yesterday. It’s €14.50 per pizza. We had two pizzas between 2 adults and 1 child. = €29
Usually we make pizza at home from scratch 99% of the time though

SleepingStandingUp · 22/09/2023 17:20

I expect to pay about £20 for me and DH so under £50

Sundance03 · 22/09/2023 17:20

We rarely get takeaways as just too expensive and my DC never finish them so seems a waste. We choose recipes from cookbooks and make them from scratch... Hairy bikers have great fakeaway recipes which are easy to make .... Or for the days we really can't be arsed we buy the sauces and bits and bobs from shops. I would never ever by takeaway pizza though as I feel they are such a waste of money, supermarkets do fantastic ready made pizzas for half the price and I think they taste nicer

CoreopsisEverywhere · 22/09/2023 17:21

Fish and chips at my nearest (and only) fish and chip ship is £13pp

multiply x 4 and it’s just far too expensive to jusfify

TheChosenTwo · 22/09/2023 17:23

Totally depends on what it is and where it’s from.
Pizza from the Italian - around £85 for us 5 with a couple of garlic breads thrown in.
Wouldn’t spent that on pizza hut.
Chinese for the 5 of us, maybe around £100 but there’s leftovers for breakfast/lunch for a few people, we just order mains for everyone and then a load of the sides/appetiser things, it changes every time depending on what we went.
Indian is about £90ish for 4 of us, ds would choose something different. Again though this does leave plenty of leftovers.
We get a takeaway once a week or sometimes once a fortnight. I don’t begrudge the money, it’s worth it to not have to clean up, I do begrudge paying money for shit quality food though so even though there will be cheaper places available it’s a false economy if we don’t actually like it!
