Takeaways - cost

How much is too much, in your opinion, for a takeaway for a family of 4?

For context we do not go out to eat aside from once in a blue moon and this is a 1 takeaway per week scenario.

For 4 adults

Chinese takeaway £40
Fish and Chips £25
Indian £40

The Indian now has an offer on a limited three course menu at £15 per head so going to try that soon.

Wow 4 adults for £40 at an Indian? That can’t be a main each though can it?

Janieforever · 22/09/2023 17:49

Huh? It’s one extra main with some sides of prawn toast and crackers, it’s a meal for 4 or 5.

A egg fried rice or noodles is a meal in itself 😂

If it was enough for only 4/5 then they wouldn’t be having it for dinner the next day.

Tiredmum100 · 22/09/2023 18:31

I've literally just ordered mine, £52 for 2 adults and 2 children, Indian takeaway.

LampHat · 22/09/2023 18:31

Just spent £68 for an Indian for three adults and 1 child. Basically restaurant prices. It stings and I won’t do it again anytime soon 🫣 Yorkshire as well - not even SE!!

RigorMortisRadio · 22/09/2023 18:34

@HermioneKipper we can get Indian for £45, 4 mains at £7.50 each, 4 rice/naan at about £3 each and then 6 poppadoms and pickle tray is £3.

Ithh · 22/09/2023 18:40

Usually £30-35 for 3 of us

NoSquirrels · 22/09/2023 18:43

One takeaway a week is too costly, is my answer.

When we do get one it’s never less than £40 for anything decent, and if I’ve got £160-175 a month to spend on treat food I’d rather go out to eat.

£200

I know most find this hard to believe but I pay about £50 sometimes for a nice Indian takeaway in London for just ME so this didn’t strike me as extortionate. Granted, it’ll be a curry for one, rice (I can usually share this with my other half as I can’t eat loads of rice), couple of bhajis, naan, raita… My favourite Chinese isn’t that much cheaper either. Fish and chips in London is even expensive (and nowhere near as good/cheap as up North in my opinion!)

But I don’t know how to feed the five thousand Mumsnet style. I eat very healthily most of the time so I’m treating myself when it comes to something we don’t have all the time like a takeaway.

Good bargains near you. Mains are at least a tenner here where we are.

Mouldyfoodhelp · 22/09/2023 20:18

Just paid £58 for five guys

2 bacon cheeseburgers

2 small bacon cheeseburgers

2 large chips

1 small chips

Only second time I've had it and the first was one burger and chips shared between everyone to try it as it is expensivr

Grapewrath · 22/09/2023 20:20

We pay around £70 for 4 adults, 2 teens

Grapewrath · 22/09/2023 20:21

We used to have curry weekly or fortnightly but it’s so expensive now that it’s only saved for a birthday or celebration

daffodilandtulip · 22/09/2023 20:43

One adult, two adult sized teens ... £30 Indian, £25 Chinese (although we always choose this for occasions so will add starters for a special one so up to £40), £15 chippy tea - teens have sausages, I have just chips plus a couple of sauces. Stopped ordering pizza as it's ridiculous and will buy a posh supermarket one for pizza nights.

autienotnaughty · 22/09/2023 20:44

4 adults - Indian £80 Chinese £60 pizza £60

Hall84 · 22/09/2023 20:56

Only on page 2. I love Chinese but the takeaways by us aren't any good so I've taken to buying the starters/ingredients at the Chinese supermarket and getting a salt & pepper chips for ~£3 near work that freeze/airfry. It's about £12 for 32 prawn toast, £3.50 for seaweed that does about 4 starters for 2 and 60p for a bag of prawn crackers that you fry at home.

RubyRubyRubyRubay · 22/09/2023 21:02

Me and my 13yr old just had a Chinese takeaway - it was £23 and still Singapore noodles left for tmrw.
We sometimes get an Indian for £16.50 mid week special and share - usually a meal left out of that too.

We don't eat tonnes though. I guess it depends on how much you all eat.

At my east London Indian takeaway is about 6 a curry, so £18 we share out three. Three rice 2.50 ish, £25 ish
Peshwari Naan 2.50 ish,
up to about £28
then a few side, maybe £3 each -coming in just under £35 for I think a good feed for 2a/3c….. the portions are very large and there’s leftovers. I don’t think we under eat. So I’d say we are also in your ball park or prices

GyozaGirl · 23/09/2023 10:24

@HermioneKipper it is that’s a main and a rice each or a Naan. This place has an offer on currently. Three course take away and you have to collect for £15 per head. It’s a limited menu. I’m up North the curry is decent.

worriedandworries · 26/09/2023 19:23

BarbaraofSeville · 22/09/2023 18:22

I think some places must do really tiny portions because just about everywhere here its not actually possible to buy a takeaway for one person because a main and rice or fish and chips alone will feed two and when you start adding starters and bread it starts to become 'so stuffed I can't move' if you eat it all.

So if you have 4 people and you order 4 mains, 4 sides a couple of starters and a couple of breads, you're actually ordering enough food for 8 people, so no wonder it's expensive. Of course, it gives you the choice of ordering less, sharing and it costing a bit less or ordering a 'full set' each and having leftovers for the next day.

People will accuse me of competitive undereating but they've not seen the amount of food I'm talking about. You can't actually fit something like fish and chips on a standard large dinner plate, the fish is hanging over the sides and the chips really piled up.

@BarbaraofSeville our takeaways are also like this! We are BIG eaters, I can smash most food infront of me, maybe we are just really lucky!
Though we live in an area where the only takeaways are chinese, Indian. Pizza and kebabs. We don't have nice takeouts of wide varieties, so I guess it's give and take

Hummingbird233 · 26/09/2023 19:25

Totally depends how much money you earn and what's affordable to you.

£60/wk sounds realistic (£15 a head) but depends which cuisine and how much you all eat.
